NBC Studios, Tom Snyder's "The Tomorrow Show", May 7th 1981
The complete, 5 part segments :
Part 1 : Interview, conversations with Ken Kesey & Jerry Garcia
Part 2 : acoustic "On The Road Again"
Part 3 : acoustic "Dire Wolf" & "Deep Elem Blues"
Part 4 : Conversations with Garcia, Weir, Hart & Kreutzmann
Part 5 : acoustic "Cassidy"
LoloYodel Notes (2015) :
With time, it seems that the originally posted acoustic songs have now dissapeared ... "Deep Elum" is still there, "Dire Wolf" also (but the audio is false, it was taken from the "Reckonning" album) ...
Here, the audio quality is NOT the best (notably "On The Road Again") ... but that's the best I can do.
Tom Snyder was host of "The Tomorrow Show" (aired late nights from 1973 to 1982). It was a talk show unlike the usual late-night fare, with Snyder, cigarette in hand, alternating between asking hard-hitting questions and offering personal observations that made the interview closer to a conversation. Very cool at the the time !
Now, regarding this evening's presence with members of The Grateful Dead, this was during a GD Tour break, between two Nassau Coliseum (Long Island) concerts and notably after the 5-6-1981 show, which was exceptional, and later became a "Dick's Picks" release.

When guitar players think they have to be perfect I show them this. Jerry makes a lot of technical mistakes but his playing is still so beautiful. Nowadays people forget that real music is performed by real people; it has feeling and comes from a magical place outside of oneself. All the producing stifles a lot of that magic.

Are you serious? You must know nothing about Jerry's ability if you think he has technical mistakes. Like technical mistakes compared classical guitar? What could you possibly be trying to say?
@TangoNevada
@TangoNevada Жыл бұрын
@@IndependentEnergyHawaii He does drop a note here and there. But the playing is so organic and natural that of course, no one cares and it's not even technically an issue. It's just real playing. The other option is he is some kind of guitar playing robot that never has a single flaw in anything he plays. Which doesn't seem in line with the Grateful dead or they're way of thinking about music.

100% anytime you are improvising and making it up on the spot you are literally using heart and spirit to feel the notes rather than memorization. This is why the dead is so good, literally every musician has such exquisite feel.
@philliplind360
@philliplind360 6 ай бұрын
Ha I feel you. 'm always defending Jerry because they have the reputation of being a "jamband." But Jerry really was an exquisite student of the guitar, as good as any jazz musician imo, if a little different in delivery.@@IndependentEnergyHawaii
@humanbeing5300

for sure. Jerry is always feeling and reaching for different areas and notes. He may play a technically bum note but then he resolves it. You can't improvise on the fly without it.

I am so happy to have rediscovered this video, this is the acoustic Jerry we needed. The whole band is just cohesive as hell and vibing. I feel like the reason I can’t get behind Dead and Co. is because it feels more robotic, John Mayer is a great guitarist in his own right just a different style.
