Casting day!! In this week's video, I'll show you how I finally got around to casting the custom parts I sculpted for my BJD Rhyllyn. Last week was mold making, if you missed it!
I ran into some interesting difficulties this time and learned a few good lessons along the way: the biggest of which is not to use resin dyes if you don't also have a way to degas the resin and eliminate bubbles while casting. You'll see why. :)
Now that I have a set of workable parts, I'm going to sand off seam lines and putty the few bubbles on his hands, then get them ready for airbrushing, which is the very last step of Rhyllyn's modification project. I didn't get him done before summer break was over, but it's close enough!
As an aside, I apologize for the couple of pops in the audio. My pop filter fell off my mic and behind a shelf and I haven't been able to retrieve it yet... oops.

Some advice from someone experienced with moldmaking and casting 1. The whole reason you make two part molds is to key them, therefore minimizing the seamlines. So I would suggest you make sure to key your molds. That also includes building the clay bed up to where it goes all around *exactly* where you want the seamline to be. So in the case of hands for example, it would be around the widest part of the hand, including in between fingers, exactly halfway up their width. 2. Especially if you aren't using a pressure pot, you can't really get away with just one pour tab, especially if you have detail like the fingers. You need vents. The vents don't have to be wide at all but they do need to connect every area likely to get bubbles to the surface. That will be any overhang, areas that are higher up than where your pour tab connects, and the tips of any small detail 3. Resin bubbling and not curing 9 times out of 10 means it wasn't mixed well enough. If you're doing it by hand, that's generally a few minutes of mixing. A popsicle stick isn't the best tool for it, because of the rounded tip: it doesn't get in the corners well enough. Another thing is, you may have added too much dye. Dye will actually inhibit curing, and resin dyes are made to be extremely potent, so you always want to use the absolute minimum that you need to get the color you want. Bubbles can also be a moisture issue in the dye. 4. Another thing re dye, it will always sink to the bottom to some degree, as well as show up differently on the surface versus the inside of the object. That's why doll companies always warn you that sanding seams off of darker skin dolls will leave marks. Obviously dye type and quality as well as curing time and method change how bad that effect is. 5. Pouring more resin on top of partly cured resin isn't the best idea. It can be done fairly okay with slow setting resins, but the shorter the working time, the worse it will turn out. That's because resin heats up as it sets. And the faster the curing time, the more violent the chemical reaction, thus reaching higher temperatures faster. The resin that's already setting is likely to cook the fresh stuff. Or your molds, if you introduce something like water and make the whole reaction go completely haywire.

For a beginner pourer this isn't that bad tbh, I'm quite impressed! A tip I can give is to cast a mould vertically. This will let you get into the smaller areas first with a syringe, toothpick, what-have-you and then pour into the larger areas. The type of resin might be an issue. The quicker cast can't get rid of the bubbles fast enough before it has hardened. There are some affordable 2 part resins on Amazon that take 24-48 hours to completely harden, but I've noticed they cure in as little as 4 hours with complete cure after 6-8 for smaller pieces like these. I hope this helps you on your resin journey! ♥️🥰

I appreciate the tips! I've never had problems with the quick-cure resin before and didn't without the dye, but I can definitely see how a slower-curing resin would be much better when I'm casting things in a more bubble-prone mold... or using the dyes. The biggest reason I went with these was because the manufacturer specifically said they work well together, and then... they didn't :( It's kinda funny--I had originally intended to set up the molds for a vertical pour, since I was going to do one-part molds, and I think that would have solved a lot of issues. I sure had a bunch of unexpected problems from the materials not working as expected.

Thanks for the tips...Ive gone through 6 sets of hands already and all the fingertips never fill in..Ill try the toothpicks, if that doesnt work then ill get the slow cure resin

Thanks for including us in the process! It's definitely interesting to watch. I hope the molds were detailed enough that the loss of your masters isn't too catastrophic

I think they are! I'm going to try a different type of resin later to see if it cures with less bubbling, but at least these produce definitely usable hands.

You may have used too much dye and it inhibited the curing. I think some things say to only use like 2% the amount of the resin is the max amount of dye to add. But, the darker tips on the hand looked pretty cool :3 Also, you may need to angle your molds so they are more vertical, the air will flow out better. But I’m glad they at least mostly worked :D

The instructions said I could use up to 5% dye, but I used less than 3% at the point where it was curing sticky :/ I typically rock my molds to ensure the air escapes and for some of the castings they are tilted until almost full, it's just not really visible from an overhead angle. Regardless, I definitely need a way to degas if I'm going to use dyes, because the green resin was sooooo bubbly!

They turned out pretty good Lomi. My experience with the resin dyes is that you can't use very much or it will impede curing making very dark colors a hassle. This seems to be the case with your pieces with the bubbling and the marble effect as the dye is not evenly distributed in the over all solution . Hope this is a help Thanks I enjoyed the video

Thanks for the info! I re-measured later on and I was using like 0.1% dye, so it's pretty wild that it messed it up that badly ._. I'll stick to dyeing parts afterward from now on.

Hey Lomi! I'm trying to see your msd sized breaches that you resently released onto your website.. I'm not sure if you are going to do a tutorial, so could you give me a quick over view of how to sew them together? I'm mainly stuck on the front sections and the larger pockets Thanks Lomi!!

Oh, which one?? What's the name of the file you downloaded? I've made so many pants patterns at this point I can't keep them straight, but I can give you instructions if I know which pair it is!

@@helenletts8049 Yes, thank you! The fly is constructed similarly to the Littlefee breeches in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hJ6IjcWWybHRiWQ.html. The biggest difference is that the LTF breeches have the fly flap on only one side. For this pair, you just fold the flap on one side to the inside, then it goes together the same. :D The rest of the pants go together like these: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rteZq7h8nczJkXk.html Hope that helps!

You don't have to. I just want his hands/arms to be green because that's the character's design. :)
