Claude Friese-Greene's 'The Open Road' is available to buy on DVD at filmstore.bfi.org.uk/acatalog/...
This extract comes from Claude Friese-Greene's 'The Open Road' - originally filmed in 1925/6 and now re-edited and digitally restored by the BFI National Archive. Britain seen in colour for the first time was heralded as a great technical advance for the cinema audience - now we can view a much improved image, but one which still stays true to the principles of the colour process.
The rather haphazard journey from Land's End to John O'Groats creates a series of moving picture postcards. Look out for shots containing the component colours - red and blue-green - such as when a little girl in a red coat and hat walks among peacocks in the grounds of a castle, and three girls with red curly hair pose by the sea at Torquay.
The car is a Vauxhall D-type - considered a sporty model at the time. A long-distance journey by car was a relatively new concept, with none of the amenities en route now taken for granted. The visit to a petrol station shows smoking on the forecourt: no health and safety issues back then! The travelogue ends with a series of recognisable London landmarks. Much remains the same - one major exception being the volume of traffic on the roads. (Jan Faull)

The view crossing the bridge has hardly changed! This clip has that tantalising "so near yet so far" feeling that history can bring. Thank you for posting it.

My Nan, rest her soul, would have been 17 at the time this video was recorded. She lived in Pimlico at the time.

History makes one wonder in nostalgia and shed a tear for the things lost and those gained, but it sure does make you reminisce

What I like is the first building on the right it's still there... looks exactly the same (so's the building on the left to be fair) but the building at the back in the centre of the bridge is also still there and it looks like the clock is the same also. Amazing.. nearly 90 years on and it looks the same (practically)

Claude your a hero. Wonderful metamorphosis, wonderful choice of music. Give me 1926 any day as long as I was rich and could take a liner to the States in 1939. More, please.

I love looking at these old clips of London. I walk along this bridge regulary and I'm surprised that most of the buildings were around as early as 1926. London has changed a lot since since 1926 but at the same time it hasn't changed much at all.

Interesting, didn't expect so many horses on streets of London in 1926.

It would be amazing to go back and experience London then, almost 100 years ago.

The streets are so much cleaner with all the horses though I am sure they were still being used in a lot of market areas.

I am aware sometimes of the history of a moment, not a grand sweeping moment of importance, but an everyday walk across a sidewalk or glance to the left. In the flutter of time, the mundane becomes the evocative flit of a ghost through a shaky lens clouded from a century of time. Your movement just now a distant echo from a creature long since merged to dust. What a wondrous deception time.

I used to tease my father, asking what it was like to grow up in a black and white world when he was a boy back then. He just laughed...

My grandmother lived in London between the wars and often talked about how filthy it was. Everything was covered in soot and you were often ankle deep in horse poop. "The smell was overwhelming on hot days".
