Once to ev'ry man and nation Comes the moment to decide, In the strife of truth with falsehood, For the good or evil side; Some great cause, some great decision, Off'ring each the bloom or blight, And the choice goes by forever 'Twixt that darkness and that light By the light of burning martyrs, Christ, Thy bleeding feet we track, Toiling up new Calvaries ever With the cross that turns not back; New occasions teach new duties, Time makes ancient good uncouth; They must upward still and onward, Who would keep abreast of truth.

I love this song so much and the words are so profound- especially today with our political chaos and people choosing wrongly..."once to every man and nation comes the moment to decide, in the strife with truth and falsehood for the good or evil side"...this could have been written today, instead it was written in 1845 !! I wish every person could hear these words...perhaps we would be living in a saner world... judith

The lyrics of this hymn are taken from a poem written by James Russell Lowell to protest the war fought during 1846-48.between Mexico and the United States. The poem: albrechtmba.wordpress.com/2012/01/26/origin-of-once-to-every/ Wikipedia article about the Mexican American War. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexican%E2%80%93American_War The music for this hymn is also used in the hymn "Oh, the Deep Deep Love of Jesus." The swelling and falling volume of the music mimics the references in the lyrics to rolling sea waves.

To Russell DeMeyere blow: I just read this info elsewhere rebutting a similar statment you made about the Mexican War. Mark DeFazio3 years ago (edited) I am afraid you are slightly incorrect regarding why it was written though. One, the Mexican-American war happened in the Spring of 1846 so he could not have written it for a war that did not exist yet. If you google the author and read information about him, you will see that Once to Every Man and Nation comes from a larger piece of work known as "The Present Crisis" which has 17 verses of which this song was taken from. Here is a quote from the page about James Lowell: "Lowell's poem "The Present Crisis," an early work that addressed the national crisis over slavery leading up to the Civil War, has had an impact in the modern civil rights movement." This song was used as a protest song against the Mexican-American war, but that was not the reason it was written.

Ebenezer also known as Ton-y-Botel (Tune in a Bottle) is a famous Welsh hymn tune composed by Thomas John Williams A.T.S.C. (1869-1944) and extracted from the second movement of his anthem "Goleu Yn Y Glyn" (Light in the Valley). The myth that the tune was discovered in a bottle on a Llyn Peninsula beach in North Wales was published in the Daily Mail in 1902. The tune is named after Ebenezer Chapel in Rhos near Pontardawe, South Wales, which T. J. Willams attended while composing the tune. Ebenezer [is a name out of the bible and] means "Stone of Help" [...] [Samuel set this stone as a memorial]. Many hymn texts are set to this tune. (wiki) - Is there more evidence, that this tune out of a bottle is hebrew origin?
