I've heard this tune before, but not sure I've ever heard the lyrics. It definitely makes one want to be strong and stand firm for our faith in Christ, regardless of trials and persecutions. But I love that last line: "Standeth God within the shadow, keeping watch above His own." What a comfort that is! Thank you for sharing, dear friend! Beautiful singing! God bless you!

For some context--the lyrics were written in Boston by Poet James Russell Lowell in 1845 as a protest against the Mexican-American War, which was an attempt by the US to expand our slave-holding territory. James Russell Lowell was the son of Congregational minister, Rev. Charles Lowell, who served Old West church in Boston and who abolished segregated seating in his church. Rev. Lowell was himself the son of the Hon. John Lowell, who was the Chief Justice of the New England Circuit and the person responsible for putting the clause abolishing slavery into the Massachusetts Constitution. So the lyrics have a very specific idea of what constitutes the "good and evil side."

This song stirs the spirit of mourning in my soul. Its like a voice crying out in land void of life, while dark, stormy clouds are aproaching with the tempest.... So few are facing it with living hope. Only Christ is our safety.

This is my absolute favourite hymn. I love how it describes the dark ages and the beginning of the reformation. Our freedom is thanks to our faithful forefathers.

This song sounds like a distant echo of the Martin Luther hymn, A Mighty Fortress Is Our God, which also may be one of the most translated of all hymns. He of course wrote it in German as the original. The devils, who he mentions in that hymn, by the way with no doubt were the send army and secret society by the Roman Catholic Church to end the Reformation and also once again forbid all Bible translation to languages of the commoners (all language but Latin, which only were read and understood by Catholic clergies). Today the majority of Christians horrendously believe that same army and secretive society is fellow brothers in faith, and I am talking about the Jesuits, who for instance as a matter of fact turned Freemasonry into, what it is today, invented and supported both fascism, communism and also the New Age movement, also is behind the mafia in USA and so fort! Today they lead the ecumenical and interfaith movement, which essentially have one evil intend: To bring back the control of all religions under one head, that whore of Babylon in Rome and the current Jesuit Pope! By the way, if you want to know the real religion of the Jesuits, then look into the Barcelona Cathedral funded by a Jesuit organization in that city, La Sagrada Familia. That sacred family is as unholy as it can be: It is build on the Gnostic lie, that Jesus Christ did not die and did no go to Heaven, essentially that He is not God, but that he had children with Mary Magdalene. Again, this they also use to claim their right to rule, because they are in his physical bloodline on Earth. That is the truth about so-called bloodline families, who always is in the top of society, where that nonsense stems from: It is a diabolic Catholic/ Gnostic lie right from the pits of Hell! I really love this kind of singing. I guess I have a song request too! It's the song "O'er all the land have the signs now appeared...." The entire song is full of living hope.
