I haven't been in London for a long, long time. It's changed a lot since then. When I was last there, the Post Office (British Telecom) Tower was the tallest building and that's half the height of the Shard. But when it comes to structures, the Crystal Palace radio transmitter was the tallest thing.

Considering how it's pronounced, it's a dumb way to spell it.
@cllris
@cllris 3 жыл бұрын
@@siphotheguy1870 as with most things in English it's because the word is derived from an old spelling usually latin. American spelling is usually a lot more modern phonetically, hence the American spelling is literally "Key" eg Florida Keys.
@siphotheguy1870
@siphotheguy1870 3 жыл бұрын
@@cllris Um if you actually knew what you were talking about then you would know that in the past Quay was spelt in a number of ways one of them being "key". It originates from the old French word "kay". The modern British spelling is an attempt to disconnect from the original French. A lot of modern British spelling is an attempt to "de-French" the English language.
@cllris
@cllris 3 жыл бұрын
@@siphotheguy1870 almost. Quay directly derives from the French word "kai" which like most modern Roman languages will likely derive from Latin. I'm not a language expert though so it was more of a sweeping generalisation. I will agree with your original point though in that a lot of British pronunciation is unintuitive to its spelling!
@siphotheguy1870
@siphotheguy1870 3 жыл бұрын
@@cllris everybody knows that French and all the romantic languages come from Latin and that English is Germanic in origin with a big influence from Latin. Thanks for telling me where the word quay comes from - after I told you where the word comes from. My point is that the spelling q-u-a-y is baseless and made up. People read "kway" because the the word begins with "Qu" meaning W is implied and should be used. The people who reinvented the spelling got the rules wrong not non-British English speakers. Please don't know repeat what I said to you as if you are informing me. The French iterations of the spelling come from a time when spelling was less formalised in France and so more than one spelling was commonly in use. The spelling "kay" or "kai" both prove my point. There would have been a time when you miss-pronounced it, the fact that you are jumping on others for miss-pronouncing it is evidence enough.

According to the video there's a submarine. But then the sub has unscheduled repairs, and you're just stranded up there? "I'm sorry but with today's winds we can't get a helicopter up there..." I'd be OK with it if there was a step-down floor where you could realistically climb out. Better yet, have a dry central access point. You get in the middle one floor below and climb up a ladder. If you want to get fancy, have one of those motorized ladders like in James Bond. Spiral staircase. That should do it. You walk up in the middle and get in the pool. Unobstructed view all around.

Why would you want a pool on a roof in a city where it rains almost all the time and it's cold most of the year? 😂
@kamgrant
@kamgrant 3 жыл бұрын
It doesn’t. It rains more in New York. And London is the hottest city in the UK.
@ramon475

@@kamgrant definitely not, there might be more rainfall overall in NYC but London has way more rainy days on which it just rains very little but all day long pretty much... In NYC there are more sunny days

As someone who works on major construction projects in London, the term ‘construction is being paused’ is being used a lot on many projects. Lots of concrete piles & core in then the clients are starting to get twitchy). Oh dear.
