@ArtemisScribe3 жыл бұрын
@@theeutecticpoint yeah they are ring-necked parakeets, there have been feral parakeets living in parts of London since as early as the 1830s but most are descendants of what are known as the "Kingston Parakeets" who established a sizable colony in Richmond Park in Kingston-Upon-Thames and then spread through South West London up into the rest of London throughout the 20th Century. There's a lot of urban legends about them being Jimi Hendrix's escaped pets or other such stories, but almost all of the stories come after the first known sightings of birds in the Royal Parks. It's a combo of escaped pets and birds stowed away on cargo ships, and for some reason the ring-necked parakeet is an invasive species that really thrives here.

Central London is a great touristy area. Even as a local from the outskirts (South-west, near Heathrow), when I head into Central to look around it's great. Normally in December I'd have gone with my parents to look at the Christmas lights and the tree in Trafalgar Square that we get given every year from Norway. Best thing to do though is to go to some of the really touristy areas, but dive off down a side street somewhere. You never know what you'll find. Explore the less travelled areas, and you'll see a whole different side to London.

Right?! How can that kind of birds live wild in London? It did not look native? 🦜
@wondermittens18443 жыл бұрын
@@Wintersnow1212 i see them all the time. The story goes that they were on the way to / already at London zoo but they escaped, and somehow they’ve just adapted to the environment. It’s crazy, i know. Just a little quirk this place has i guess.
@jamesharmer92933 жыл бұрын
The green birds are ring necked parakeets. They live wild all over London. Rumour has it that they escaped from the set of "The African Queen" when it was filmed in London back in the day. But whatever, they're now common in the London parks and green spaces.
@swordfish19293 жыл бұрын
@@Wintersnow1212 There is an urban legend that they escaped from the film set of "The African Queen" in the 1950s and created a breeding population. Not sure how true that is though
@cholten993 жыл бұрын
I believe that they were a fad pet for a while many years ago and when people got fed up of looking after them they set them free. They've bred like crazy and are all over the parks in central London.

In Canada we don't have snow days because we wouldn't have any school for 4 months of the year.

Indeed: the closest we had to them where I live were in 2007 and 2020, when blizzards made it difficult to go anywhere. London honestly looks like a typical Canadian city at the start of winter.

Can confirm. It was so beautiful. Got to make a snowchild, had a surprisingly competitive snowball fight with some of the neighbours, then back inside because my fingers went numb. Hot chocolate, stayed inside for the rest of the day. The snowchild I made is pretty much gone now, only a tiny pile of them is left :(

I'm in North East London and we didn't even get that, there was a light dusting of snow one morning that immediately got washed away by rain. This is the second video I've seen of snow in London, I'm wondering if I was somehow completely oblivious to a different snowfall.
