I have had three different Piano teachers over the years, and there was never any mention of gradations of use of the sustain pedal🤣. I will go and try it out!

Great material to share,great lesson, as always,! Nobody ever talks about the una corda pedal! My copy of Moonlight Sonata includes in the notation "una corda". Sometimes I feel like I'm cheating using it to play quieter, handy with a 6'2" in a relatively small living room!😅 Thank you for creating these wonderful videos!!

A great tutorial/ seminar Tom. Very helpful. However what about the mysteries of the middle pedal? I have never seen or heard that explained- either for an acoustic piano or a digital one. PS. I love your shoes - cool and comfortable looking.

Yes I need to do another video on the middle pedal. Most of the time you will never need it and to make matters more confusing it has a different function on upright pianos then on Grand pianos. I stayed away from it because its far more important to master the sustain pedal and so many students struggle with that.

I have also been advised to practice at least some sections of a piece without pedal. One benefit of this is that you find out where it is possible to achieve Legato by use of the fingers only. This may result in a clear, less muddy result. Does that make sense?

Yes, this is very important to do especially if you are overusing the pedal to compensate for your fingers. It is also repertoire dependent as well.

I think it’s with mentioning in this context that playing a note without pedal is not the same as playing the same note with pedal. This is because of the sympathetic vibrations of all the other notes you get when the pedal is down. Is this not so?
