We're working on integrating a diesel heater into the Lone Peak Camper. Check out our test to see how long it lasts with a gallon of fuel and no insulation in 15 degree weather.

Yes, I would rather my fuel be mounted on the exterior. Also would like the velcro to add insulation to the tent portion. Interesting to hear about the new heatervault option. With the changes, I’ll definitely have to modify my order when the time comes.

Take a look at turn button fasteners to mount the insulation panels like the ones they use on boat canvases. That way you can integrate them into the extrudes and don’t have to worry about sewing Velcro into the tent panels or gluing Velcro to the extrudes, both of which are likely to experience failure with repeated use.

Glad to see you making these considerations while building up your camper design! I've also got the Maxpeedingrods variant, and they can be pretty awkward to set up if it's not a permanent install. I ended up modifying my truck bed storage cubby to create an air duct which will heat the "downstairs" of my GFC, and I plan to leave a bed panel out to allow the heat to travel upward. Interested in seeing what solution you end up with!

I am using my 5kw diesel heater with my gazelle. It does just fine set on the lowest setting. I just point the vent towards my bed and I am comfortable all night. I only use about a half gallon of diesel in 8 hours. You could do something like add a panel to block off the sleeping tent area from the bottom of the camper for winter camping. It would help to keep the tent warmer.

The problem with diesel fuel placed outside in a very cold temperature is that it tends to freeze and turn into a gelatinous consistency and mess up your diesel heater, that’s why I placed my diesel fuel inside.

Get some diesel 911. It's an additive for cold Temps. We use it in our equipment at work.
@carlosgoesplaces

I was gonna comment on the temp thing as well and I know there are additives. I have not used them. My truck is diesel but this winter has been mild with a few very cold days. Maybe an insulated fuel tank. I think the pros of storing it outside outweigh having it inside and the few problems can be resolved.

Kerosene is the answer here. Mix in with the diesel or burn pure kero in cold temps. Also keeps the heater squeaky clean

Our diesel heater is super hot on the lowest setting. We winter camp with the lowest setting and it doesntvgo through much fuel. We hove it go into the small side so it shoots at our feet . I think a sweet option could be a tube that goes all the way across at the bottom whith holes venting right at the feet. Cant wait to see these and possibly buy one in the future. Awesome that you are right in wenatchee too.

great idea and yes making a exterior mount for say some rotpax on both doors for fuel and water and what not would be a huge benefit to having to diy it. and as annoying as insulation is and having to install and take down everytime it’s the price you pay for winter camping in a tent lol. i’m cool with it.

Idea: detachable pelican type holder. Mount the heater and fuel to the outside in a paired opposite location. Recirculate the air flow tube pack into “tough boxe”. To maximize heat. Come summer the whole thing pops off and diesel “can” swaps out for reg gas can. Have some lid stays to keep the box open while in operation. Maybe a drop down pipe to fully evacuate exhaust gas?? An aluminum box may hold up better and not need the propped open lid.

Me personally, would run an aux fuel line from the diesel tank on the truck and have a quick release coupling mounted around the rear tailgate somewhere. Quick and easy, no need to handle fuel and can run it for as long as you like.

Insulation and vent port would be a nice offering and then just let everyone figure out their own heater. Plenty of options online for that. I haven't seen anyone offering a vent port yet in the hard body portion of the camper and that's been a big want on my end.

Looks to me like you're approaching this pretty logically. The other way that may work is a propane powered heat exchanger (Truma style) so people only need one type of fuel with them if they're cooking with propane. I believe they still can operate as a closed loop system and reduce humidity as the heat isn't directly from the flame.
@lonepeakoverland9213

I haven't seen the Truma before. Super cool that they build in a water heater too. We're hoping to be able to adapt our vent port to propane and diesel.

Will you be looking at a similar option on the cooling side. I would assume if you work out a heater that some kind of A/C unit shouldnt be to difficult. Climate control options are important on both ends of the spectrum. Many of us camp in the hot summer months and with dogs that can be heat sensitive. Thanks!

Right now our only cooling option is our vent fan to create breeze. Cooling requires so much power in general. I've seen DIY swamp cooler systems that seem legit though.

How about a slightly recessed side door that can hold all of the heater, fuel tank, and accessories. You'll love a small amount of internal space but it would keep all of that equipment outside. Or make it like a side opening tool box.

I currently put my diesel heater on a table outside of my truck and run the hot air outlet in the window of my Leer canopy. I did order my camper from you guys with the duct to allow access into the camper without me having to cut any holes. I like the idea of being able to run another flex hose from the intake side into the tent area so we can recirculate warmer air. I ordered the storage vault as well so I would love to see your idea of how to mod the vault to hold a diesel heater. Is your idea only designed to work with what you guys design for a diesel solution or will it work for any diesel heater? I have now turned my interest into another heating solution due to ongoing issues with these diesel heaters and want to run an idea by you to investigate. Dickenson P-9000 propane heaters that is used mainly in sailboats has got my attention. Very simple to operate and dependability in all conditions and altitudes. They are putting these in the Alu Cab Canopy Campers with some after market kits. I was wondering is there any wall real-estate in the Lone Peak to mount one of these units in the back passenger corner? Maybe a custom Molly Panel attached will allow a place to hang the heater? Then we would need a solution for the exhaust and intake pipe?? Anyway just an idea to maybe look at. Let me know your thoughts.

How many KW was the heater you tested? Most are 2Kw or 5Kw. I've been building a 5Kw diesel heater into a 22" Rigid Toolbox the last few months. The heater itself is really cool, built by a company called Lavaner. It has a barometer to measure altitude built in and will adjust fuel dosing for altitude. That's the big thing with the diesel heaters, most are tuned for sea level (Below 2500ft). I live in Colorado and regularly camp at 10,000ft + which in order for the heater to function properly, you need to adjust the dosing by up to 25%. Otherwise, you'll get excess soot buildup in the combustion chamber or risk it throwing an error code. Also, because of the dosing, a 5Kw heater at 10,000ft, will only put out about 4Kw of heat. 2Kw will only put out about 1Kw of heat, which will mean the heater needs to run constantly to keep the wedge at temperature i.e. less fuel efficiency. My 5Kw heater with a 2gal Rotopack, will get me about 2-3 nights worth of heat, with outside temps around 15 degrees.
