Lone Pine California (200 Mile) Road Trip Ride Along and Buckle up and join me on an epic 200-mile adventure to Lone Pine, California. We’ll be crossing the vast, otherworldly Mojave Desert highways and dipping down to the lowest point in the US at Badwater, California, a staggering 282 feet below sea level. Feel the heat yet?
From there, I cruise along Highway 190, making a pit stop at the legendary 20 Mule Team Historic Site. Ever wonder how they hauled all that borax back in the day? We’ll find out together. Next, we’ll tackle some scenic mountain passes and take a quick detour to Keeler to check out the End Of The Line Monument - an old historic train depot that’s sure to give you a glimpse of yesteryears.
Then, it’s onward to the visitor center at US Highway 395 before we hit Lone Pine. Here, we’ll dive into the silver screen at the Hollywood Museum of Western Films. After soaking up some movie magic, we’ll pay our respects at the 1872 cemetery for earthquake victims - a somber but important stop.
Our journey doesn’t end there, though! We’ll visit the Manzanar Historic Site, reflecting on the history of the Japanese during World War II. Finally, we'll roll into Independence, California, to rest up for the night.
It’s a trip packed with history, stunning landscapes, and a touch of Hollywood glam - you won’t want to miss it. Let’s hit the road!

Hi , longtime subscriber here. There's are numerous key factors as to why your so successful on KZfaq my friend. But I must point out one key factor, you have a distinctly Mellifluous voice . In a sense , you remind me of Bob Ross . The beloved American painter on PBS . You have a very smooth voice that puts people at ease , God knows in this day & age we could all use a little audio therapy. Your videos have always been enlightening, informative and entertaining. Thank you for allowing us to tag along on your journey's. I'm relatively certain you have single-handedly inspired countless folks to strike out on their own adventures. Myself included . And I hope to meet & thank you personally out there on the road someday. Until then , God bless you and keep you safe.

Great Russ. The Lone Ranger came over to England by the BBC mid 50s. The first cowboy I saw apart from in books & comics. An indelible memory watching this on my grandmother's TV starting a life-long passion for westerns. The start was him galloping along the Alabama flats at Lone Pine filmed in black & white. In 1956 the start was filmed in colour at Iversons Ranch. This start is always tagged on to all b&w episodes on TV & DVDs, thus depriving viewers of the far more exciting, original beginning. Happy Trails.

Hey Russ 🤠 what a cool drive today. Lone Pine has had hundreds of movies and TV shows filmed there. And that museum is on my to do list! I was very impressed with those saddles !! The camp was incredibly sad, but, I’m glad you showed it, because, I imagined it much worse. Another great video today 👍👍

🎵On a (no so) dark desert highway, (no so) cool wind in my hair, we're headed to Lone Pine, Russ is driving us there...🎶 (apologies to The Eagles 🙃) I've driven CA 190 many times, it's nice enjoy the views from the passenger seat for once. At 9:40, the view may be of "flat dirt", but if you were to stop and take a closer look at the desert pavement you'd be surprised--the variety of different rocks is pretty amazing. At Badwater, when it rains...well, it becomes Lake Manley. They were kayaking out there earlier this year! With all the crowds at National Parks these days, it sure is a treat to have those places to yourself, isn't it? As you're driving past the hotels, I'm thinking of the times I swam in their pools, especially the one at Furnace Creek Ranch at sunset where you could float around and watch the mountains change color and see bats flying overhead. The Film museum in Lone Pine has grown a bit since I've been there. I really liked the props from Tremors. The Eastern California Museum in Independence and the Laws Railroad Museum outside of Bishop are also well worth visiting. You've probably already been to Bodie by now, I'm curious to see how the road up there is these days. It used to be pretty rough!

I stayed in Death Valley N.P. in the first week of June 2016. Only myself and one other person in the campground. It was the last weekend for that campground to be open until the Fall. Met a French couple out on Bad Water Basin and warned them if they weren't sweating, they were already dehydrated; gave them some water and suggested they head back. I waited until they safely returned to the parking lot. By the time I got back at 9:30 am it was in the lower 100s F.

Wow. 90 at sunrise. Love hitting the road as the light is just breaking - especially in the desert. Not the heat part though. And the heat ain't everywhere. Cold damp and drizzly this morning here on the west coast. June-gloom as it's long been called. Some folks would rather have the heat. I'd just like to see some blue sky fairly soon. Can see it over on the other side of the mountains but I doubt will get it here. Another good one here! Cheers. 👍

Wow! Russ, that was a very interesting trip in time to Manzanar. I grew up in Gardena, CA in the 60s, all my friends were Japanese kids. Seems like all the families I knew were doing well by that time and had put the hard times behind them. In fact it wasn't till I had a Japanese friend in the 80s who told me about his family being there as we drove to Mammoth to go skiing that I learned about the place and what had happened there. Was a different world than what we live in now. I really hope and pray that scene never plays out again in America. Great video!

Very cool to see Death Valley in the morning light. I drove from Flagstaff from Overland expo west that I missed meeting you at, through Vegas to Pahrump and then took Bell Vista rd to Death Valley Junction. Then took 190 through Death Valley stopped off at Zabrisky Point and Mesquite Sand Dunes and ended up in Lone Pine at Tuttle Creek Campgrounds. It was around 4 pm when I traveled through there and I was blown away by the scenery of Death Valley. I will be at Overland expo pnw in Redmond Oregon on June 28-30 and hopefully I will see you there. I’m working the Kakadu Showers and helping that company out by helping tend the showers.
