Lone Star Grillz announced a new offset smoker that they are calling the "Texas" edition. Is it LSG's answer to Aaron Franklin's smoker? I took a look at it during my podcast and briefly went over the features that caught my attention.

I was instantly intrigued when I saw this new LSG smoker and first thought was that it looked a lot like a Workhorse75. One advantage of the LSG for me is they are less than an hour away and I wouldn’t have to pay shipping. Other than that I think I’m gonna stick with Workhorse when I finally make a purchase. I really just don’t care for the firebox on the LSG.

I completely understand. If I buy another stick burner, I think I will lean towards one with a large firebox.

I’ve got the 30” vertical offset with warming oven and 1/2” firebox, and my box is MORE than big enough….the smaller firebox is only on these smaller, barrel-type pits.

I hate that the firebox only takes smaller splits

Sometimes having to make the splits smaller is a hassle.

Looks nice, but that fire box look very short. That might make it difficult to manage the fire and limit it to only short sticks.

I wish that I could see and cook on it in person. I don’t know whether the firebox is shorter than the 20” models.

I like this grill except for the small firebox and it also doesn't have a slide out fire grate (no welded in rails for one either). So if I wanted to use the charcoal basket, I have to set it on the bottom of the firebox without any space underneath. I'd prefer a fire grate to set it on so the ashes have somewhere to fall. For this reason I think I'd lean toward one of their smokers with the fire grate unless LSG is willing to add that feature. Of course, that doesn't address the issue of a small firebox.

I haven't looked into it yet, but I wonder how the size of the firebox on the TX edition compares to their 20" smokers. I would think that it's the same size. I wouldn't want an offset with a firebox any smaller than the 20" models.

LSG is notorious for having small fire boxes and small diameter stacks and these units are no exception. What's even more frustrating with these Texas editions is the large exhaust scoop graduating into their standard small stack. All they've done is moved the choke point from the end of the cooking chamber to 3-4 inches into the scoop. To answer your question as to why the firebox is so high. For one, it's a small firebox and just looks higher than the Aaron Franklin smokers. Two, the firebox outlet is above grate much like AF smokers are. Maybe I'm wrong and everybody else's fire boxes and stacks are way too big? I can't imagine other high end stick builders(Workhorse pits, Fatstack smokers, Millscale Metalworks, primitive pits, Chud pits) would go through the high expense of making the firebox and stacks so much larger than LSG without well proven purpose.

I would say that it is their answer to AF's smoker. This one has the firebox a lot higher than the AF one but I'm not sure how much difference it makes. I was on the list for an AF smoker and I got the email in March of 2021 to buy one. I decided not to because of the price increase at the time and that I decided that I probably wouldn't be smoking with wood most of the time so it didn't make sense for me to buy one. My M1 can burn all wood if I want to do a cook like that.

I agree Wayne. I thought of Franklin’s smoker immediately as soon as I saw the Texas edition. I also put myself on Franklin’s list but when the email came I just couldn’t justify the cost.

@@BackyardSmokeMasterBBQ I have watched quite a few videos of people cooking on the AF smoker and they all say that it works very well other than it is kind of small for the price.

Agree with you both. It’s kinda small when you factor in the hot spot on the right side of the AF pit. The fact that you can’t adjust the damper on the firebox or the stack means you can’t snuff out the fire. Minor issues I know but we’re all about the details. I would say a Fatstack 80 or better yet 120 or the Workhorse 1975 is much more smoker for the money than the AF. Lastly the small splits requirement on the Lonestar Texas is disappointing as well.

Wayne, I have also seen & heard positive reviews about the Franklin. It has always looked a little small to me but that doesn’t bother me. I’d love to see one in person someday.

@KD Ranch AZ I didn’t know that you can’t adjust the damper on the stack. I think that would bother me too. Does that mean you can’t prevent rain from entering the stack? I’d also like to see Fat Stack and Workhorse in person.
