The actors in this period of film history placed a lot of their own character and personality into each of the parts they played. People had much more character and were acutely aware of moral standards. Today's actors can't even come close to these performances.

Great picture for a rainy Sunday afternoon. Cast of superb star actors---Cliff, the elegant Miss Loy in a real dramatic role far removed from her 30s glamour days and that stinker Rob Ryan, one of my favourite Film Noir actors. The interesting thing is that so many of them were Sympathetic, Civil Rights - Humanitarian activists in Real Life. And dont forget Dolores Hart who gave it all up to become a Nun. The film is loose remake of Advice to the Lovelorn (1933) with Lee Tracey.

The movie is based on the novella “Miss Lonelyhearts” by Nathanael West. Clift and Ryan exhibit the right tension between an idealist and a cynic. I’d love viewing two other films on the newspaperman themes: Sweet Smell of Success and Ace In The Hole.

side note: Actress Dolores Hart who plays Montgomery Clift's girlfriend early in this movie left Hollywood in circa 1963 to go to become a nun in Connecticut and she still is a Roman Catholic nun till this day . " Following her movie debut with Elvis Presley in Loving You (1957), she made 10 films in five years, including Wild Is the Wind (1957), King Creole (1958), and Where the Boys Are (1960). At the height of her career, Hart left acting to enter the Abbey of Regina Laudis monastery in Connecticut...." source Wikipedia

He does look pretty damn good for a man who had the serious facial injuries he suffered - AND a man who suffered from addictions and other chronic illnesses. I get tired of hearing how "disfigured" and "terrible" Monty looked after 1956. He looked somewhat different, yes, and older. Not surprising given his problems. But in many shots, I find him utterly beautiful.

I think you are the only one here who agrees with me. I don't see how anyone who has read the novel could think this was a good film. It's not just that it's bad, but it completely ruins the satiric black comedy of the original by turning it into a melodrama, which is as bad as making "Candide" into a melodrama.

Honey, you got played by Don the Con. He is a convicted felon and an unregistered sex offender who is facing more trials. God does not use profane, filthy, corrupt people. The hate is pleasing only to Satan. The violence he evokes is not of God. Put your faith in Christ only! It is blasphemous to worship a man. Especially such a vile, hateful, self centered one! Let him go his way. Trust in God and HIS will. That man earned a prison sentence many times over. Let him reap what he's sown. It comforts me to know that the women and girls he's violated may see some form of justice. The country wants justice. Accept reality. The con job was just that.
