Very strong man! People allways talk about technique, but strength is as equally important and should improve together with technique. I swim using the same technique 1000 mtrs in 19 min, while you do 1500 mtrs. I will never reach those numbers, but nevertheless I am a happy 49 year old recreational triathleet, who appreciates more talented people sharing their efforts:-). Hope you are well and still going strong man!

Indeed. Strength/stamina is a must, then come the technique

Hi my only concern is that can I hold a 3 stroke breathing pattern all the time when doing distance training? I swim about one mile(1.5K) per practice and I'm a little worried that breathing every 3 strokes all the time will create hypoxia and oxygen debt in my body( which might bad for health in the long run since most long distance swimmers breathe every 2 strokes and they seem to get more oxygen in the body??). What is your opinion on this issue? Should I only use bilateral breathing simply as a drill in training or can I hold a 3 stroke breathing pattern my entire 40-45 minute swimming workout??

Tom Nolen me too. I can only do 3 stroke breathing for 100 meters then after that I switch 2 cycle breathing...then I can swim as long as I can

Do you have any stats on most distance swimmers breathing every 2? 50m swimmers take from 0 to 1 breath, 100m ones probably breath every 2 strokes the most. But for long distance swimmers breathing every 3 or 4 strokes is doable. You are going at a relaxed rate and trying to minimize wasting energy so breathing every 2 could be considered overkill. Breathing every 3rd or 4th would be comparable to runners training in high altitude: it makes the body be more optimal at using whatever oxygen is available. If you are not taking enough oxygen you'll simply slow down. Again, that would be like running at whatever top speed one can sustain given the available oxygen and vo2 capacity. Whether running or swimming at close to maximum available oxygen is good of bad for your health is debatable. In general, doing exercise is good. I'm not a good swimmer but have done 1500m using 4 strokes at times. 3 and 2 are easier but it disrupts smoothness more often. At the end of the day, just use whatever is faster for you.

Edwin Chen I don't have stats but world /Olympic gold medallist long distance swimmers like katie ledecky or sun yang do 2 cycle brathing..check Olympic videos and note their strokes

Hi, I breathe every 2 strokes when using 6-kick, but when 2-kick, breathing every 3strokes is enough for me. I think that breathing both right and left is important for the race in the sea such as triathlon and OWS.

Ah, the definition of long distance to me are olympic triathlon and other open water swims like 10km. Sighting in open water with 2 stroke breathing is not as useful as with every 3rd. That's why a lot of triathletes do every 3rd. For shorter distances one is going for maximum power and inside the pool one has the lines as a guide so every 2nd would work.

Loved the video! I have 1 question though, can you explain how your technique would change without a wet suit? I find that I need to kick more and have higher stroke rate (more speed) to stay on top of the water to breathe easily. But that makes my heart rate higher and can’t swim long distances

Cavalier Abou Hamma triathletes prefer to save their legs for the bike and run so I am told. Most will do a two beat kick

Because the legs are big muscles and require a lot of energy or fuel and when you kicking hardly you will get fatigued or exhausted more quickly because the heart rate will raise and your ability to complete a long distance becomes hard because you consumed a lot of energy but if you used and focused in your arm strokes you will save more energy and you will be able to complete the long distance swimming and cycling and running the key is how to distribute your effort in the competition.

He needs some 37 strokes for 50m which isn't a signature for a good technique... could easily be corrected to 32 while maintaining same speed (meaning 13% in increased efficiency)

"To each his own technique". Hence says the triathlete. We swimmers know they cant swim anyway. its fine, to each his own technique it is. Have fun trying to "break" your sub-1hr 3.8k IRONMAN swim. We all know how "difficult & far" it is.
