Mike built a quality Long Ez. The other guy that painted his black is crazy. Rutan specifically says to paint the aircraft white for heat reasons.

I’ve come to a point in my life where I enjoy fly ins more than air shows. Nothing beats them.

I agree! Fly ins are more personable and you get a chance to meet some really cool pilots. Plus, let’s face it, at a fly in you are the main attraction 😂

I haven’t yet. I just joined the EAA, so I’m learning how it all operates. It’s something I’d be interested in!

Mike is a really nice guy. I haven’t met him in person but we have exchanged emails. Hope to attend one of his fly-ins some day, although it would be a multi day trip coming from CA. Not bad in our VariEZ.

I wouldn’t be laughing too much. I am sure the EZ will out perform your Cessna. I was disappointed that you didn’t have an shots of the EZ flying next to you or going By You!

19 years to build? I built my first Long EZ in 23 months while I was working full time. 25-30 hours a week, every week, an obsession. My second Long EZ took 4 years, mainly because I had an airplane to fly and I'd be out flying instead of working on the plane. Also, Mike Melville built the first plans built Long EZ in less than 6 momths while working full time at Scaled Comopsits full time.

Yes, but a military job sometimes comes with multiple tours months away or 12-16 hour days even when you are home-base...who knows right? And then there are the perfectionist type builder and the "...that will do fine enough quicky type..." and the anything in between I guess...

So he was in the Airforce for 20 years, a F16 mechanic, and a an airplane maintenance chief for 9..............and says he didn't know anything about airplanes (engines / wiring/ etc). That's interesting

I believe his statement of no experience was specific to wiring and electronics. I know plenty of a/p IA folks that don’t fool around with detailed avionics issues. Either way, I’m glad you tuned in and watched the video. Cheers 🍻!
