Flight attendant here. Do NOT apply dry shampoo or nail polish on the plane. Dry shampoo will set off the fire alarm and nail polish is flammable, also smells horrible.

Hi Elizabeth - yes I agree. That’s why I said in the video that smells are stronger on airplanes and you should wait until you de-plane to apply anything with a scent. But you’ll likely want to use those things before going through customs if you want to feel refreshed after a long-haul.

I note that you said polyester fabric is breathable. It actually is not, unless it is blended with breathable fibres like cotton. Because of its plastic fibers, polyester fabric's lack of permeability can make it feel hot and sticky in warm weather. So, if you insist on polyester, you should make sure to check the label for cotton also. Even when blended, it won't be as breathable as cotton alone, or merino wool.
@MeansToTravel
@MeansToTravel Жыл бұрын
That’s interesting! I find poly blends to be very comfortable and cooling, almost like silk! I personally hate traveling in cotton shirts because if I start to sweat, it doesn’t dry quickly and makes me feel gross throughout the travel day. But even worse is acrylic fibers for that. Merino wool and cashmere all the way for the top layer!

Great information! One thought, if you put your SPF in a container other than what it comes in, make sure light can’t get through, that is how it degrades and needs to be reapplied to your skin.
@MeansToTravel
@MeansToTravel 3 жыл бұрын
Really great point!!! Yes that is so true. If I put my SPF in one of the clear containers, it's then stored inside my tote bag or purse in the dark. But I'll be more mindful about any sun exposure when it's pulled out of the deep depths for application! Thanks!

Neck pillows I travel on both airbus and Boeing the head rest has a bending type mechanism that you can shape about your head by hand locking your head into a resting position . If travelling to the Middle East check to see if your medication is legal in that country. Even if you have it in your system.

I have everything I need right there with me in the under the seat bag, and then my roller with things like my clothes goes up overhead. I especially love this Briggs and Riley tote with a trolley sleeve, because I just pop it on top of my roller bag and wheel everything through the terminals! 😀

I try to wear shoes I can squeeze into and out of without having to tie and untie -- often you can't reach down there.Of course you figured this out after you've had to pad down to the filthy bathroom in your socks. I wear my thicker smart wool (merino) socks. block out light I bring a black t-shirt. I've paid over $40 for eye shades - they leaked as much light as the freebies. A black (or dark) T is always perfect -- for over twenty years. I bring a neck pillow. I know some scoff at them. An extra layer is a thin long sleever merino top. I pack multiple merino layers including underwear and socks. Nylon pants and shorts for very hot weather (shortly I'm heading to Vietnam from California). As soon as I can switch to the time at the destination. The shift usually works well if I have to stay awake through my departure (home) time. Awake over 24 hours arrive home at 9:30 pm, I was up at 5 am to go to work the next day. Sometimes even this doesn't work. I like coffee at the destination morning time. Often the cabin crew will black out the cabin at the departure night which helps no one. I stay awake, headlamp, window shade cracked a little, some obsessive task to keep me awake. (I once wrote for about 6 hours to stay awake. No memory what I wrote.) If you've ever needed compression socks always have a pair even if you haven't needed them in a while. For the past three + years I've worn an N95 mask. You're in an enclosed tube with hundreds of other people. We've all heard absolutely bizarre things from people about disease transmission. I never want to show up at customs running a fever. (I was in Hong Kong at the beginning of Covid, left just as they were closing the border. I've never contracted it.) I put all my pocket stuff in baggies, then when I get to security I just slide out the bags and put them in the bin with my cell phone. If you need a dongle always bring two or three. You might not be able to find a replacement. I had only one in the UK, had to take my iPhone out of the case to plug in the headphones. Yep, it cracked the glass. Noise Cancelling headphones like AirPods take about half the stress out of flying by reducing the engine noise. Even if I"m not listening to anything I'll leave ear buds in to reduced the engine noise. Headlamp. Get a good one, it's worth it. I've got a Petzel Actik Core. USB rechargable. Cheap ones are dim and useless for reading. I like Melatonin. About 45 minutes to 90 minutes after I take it I consistently feel sleepy. But it doesn't keep me asleep. I have a sound machine at home that is terrific. I'll listen to an audio book I've listened to before, this can help me stay asleep. WetOnes are great. I always carry hand sanitizer. If I need a more stringent clean, I'll drip some alcohol hand sanitizer on a wetone. Water bottle. Never ever have anything in the bottle before you go into security. (If you stop at Starbucks get a cup.) You'll forget some dregs in the bottom and they'll tell you leave the line or throw away your bottle. After security fill up your bottle. A drinking fountain will have better water than the plane. There is a huge difference between the water in the bathroom and what they'll serve you. Never drink the stuff in the bathroom. I won't even rinse my toothbrush with it. Food on a flight is for fidgeting. It's best just not to bother eating but drink water and coffee. I fidget and I eat.... I never lock my luggage, I'll put tape over the opening side, or I just bought some bright colored straps so I can recognize it. In over 50 years I've never had anything go missing, even when they sent my luggage to the wrong city. If you tape your luggage and they open it, you'll see immediately that the tape is disturbed so you can immediately check if anything is missing. Happy landing.

Some great tips, but the first remark about clothing made me giggle - polyester is not breathable. It’s true it won’t generally wrinkle, but rayon, silk, or cotton are breathable. In my opinion, merino wool is the best option. It regulates body temperature, does not hold body odors, comes in very light weights, and is extremely breathable.
@MeansToTravel
@MeansToTravel Жыл бұрын
Haha yes I hear you. I personally find my poly and poly blend sleeveless tops fairly breathable / thinner as well as faster drying from any sweat compared to other options like cotton tops. But I heard that historically polyester used to be really uncomfortable back in the 70s when it was popular. But these days a lot of my workout gear is even polyester and polyester blends! I agree Merino wool and cashmere are great for layers! I just traveled for a month in Europe with one cashmere sweater and it performed perfectly!

Although it can save a lot of space, it might not be a good idea to put your meds in a plastic bag. It's best to keep them in the original packaging, as pills in bags might bring on extra screenings at border control.
@MeansToTravel
@MeansToTravel 4 жыл бұрын
Great suggestion - I agree that's definitely something to consider depending where you're travel. I personally have not had an issue with the way I pack the medications in a clear plastic bag (I've done this in Asia, Europe, North America, and South America). Since the pills are contained in their original packaging and simply removed from their cardboard boxes, it's usually fine since they're not loose. The exception is that sometimes I pack my OTC ibuprofen loose in a small canister without an issue because they pills themselves have labels on them. As a caution, if you have prescription medication, you should definitely always keep the pills inside the original bottle or package and have the prescription available in case you run into any questions or issues. But you make a good point to definitely do your research on the rules for the country you're visiting, because it might be handled differently by different security teams. Thanks Liesbeth!

Thank you for al this information 💖 definitely mentioning to not spray the dry shampoo or scents or etc. on the plane. I’m asthmatic and have a lower oxygen intake (even with clean fresh air I take in less oxygen than a regular person) and when you take that lower intake as 100% for me, getting in contact with irritating scents (perfume, smoke, spray deodorant, dry shampoo, hair spray, cleaning products, etc) that I’m not accustomed to (my mother used the same perfume on a daily basis ever since I was born and although I still react to it I don’t react as heavily to it anymore) my oxygen intake drops 90%. So I’m barely getting oxygen. That’s already exhausting out in the open in the fresh air, add to that a pressurised cabin and circulation air, that’s just .... i usually survive a flight without problems but when someone sprays something things get difficult and I am usually left with breathing with my scarf in front of my mouth and nose as well as taking a lot more medication than usual. I know it’s an unusual situation but you never know who is on the plane with you and seems perfectly fine but who can be struggling with something on the inside. Ps I’m not a native English speaker so sorry if my English isn’t great and sorry for the long post 😅
@MeansToTravel

Thanks so much for sharing this information! I completely understand you'd want to avoid any additional oxygen intake issues. It is definitely important that we all consider the potential health needs of all the passengers around us as well as our own when traveling!

Hi Eliz, we "met" on Wolters World Live feed. For me being in New Zealand long haul is over 9 hours, our nearest neighbour (Australia) is 4 hours away hours, the flights I normal take are over 24 hours, with three flights to get to Europe. I have never taken as much as you in my carry on its normally, laptop, cables, spare underwear that's it. That said I normally fly Business class to Europe so most of what you have in your bag the airline supplies, if I want it. Will keep going back though your videos, and try at some stage to catch up on live feed. cheers.

Business class service is fantastic, and yes I agree that the airlines often provide many of the amenities I list for folks flying in that cabin. Excited to connect via the Wolters World chats, and I look forward to seeing you around on this channel as well! Thanks so much for the great comment!

So interesting! Both my husband and I have carried our Tweezerman tweezers through security at Heathrow and London City a bunch in the past! So sorry to hear she had that experience! According to the website Gov dot UK, tweezers are definitely allowed in both hand luggage and hold luggage, so that shouldn’t have happened if it was recent!

Wow that's a lot of flying for sure! My tips are: make sure to wear your compression socks on the long haul flights, try to get a full night's sleep, wear sunscreen, walk around the cabin frequently, drink LOTS of water, avoid drinking a lot of alcohol, bring items for freshening up like toothbrush and deodorant, bring a change of clothes in your cabin bag, wear layers to avoid feeling cold, and make sure you have a lot of different options for entertainment. Good luck, and have fun in Auckland!

@@MeansToTravel Yeah, it's a pretty brutal trip but i'll use ur tips without a doubt. I'm sitting inbetween my friends so they wont get mad at me for standup so often during the flight, I might just get some excercise during our 4 hour layover in hong kong. Should i bring earplugs or just a normal over-ear headset?
@MeansToTravel
@MeansToTravel 2 жыл бұрын
@@znek4288 Good question, I think that depends on how well you can sleep on airplanes. I'm a bit of a light sleeper, so I typically prefer headphones instead of ear plugs so I can have a relaxing playlist or white noise playing in my ear and drowning out the airplane sounds. But if you sleep easily on planes, ear plugs might be fine. :)

Yes, right! That's why I say in the video that you bring a mini to take care of anything urgent (i.e chips). I agree definitely do not paint your actual nails on the plane! Touching up a chip quickly in the lav at least wouldn't have that issue. :-)

Just a note in US TSA allows 4 fluid ounces for liquids for carry on. However much of the rest of the world the limit is 100 milli litres which is actually less. Also some countries insist that your liquids fit in a bag they provide.
@MeansToTravel
@MeansToTravel Жыл бұрын
I believe the USA's TSA limit is still 3.4 fl oz for all liquids, which is the same as 100 mL. That's the rule I've always been told! The only difference that I find is that the USA is a tad more lenient about fitting things in a quart size baggie. You're totally right that places like the UK make travelers re-pack their liquids into the bags they give away at the airport to make sure everything is in a quart size!
