Idea for you: a glass pane could be integrated into each of those inner covers and serve as a propolis trap, provided that there is enough light peeking through the main cover in some way.

Kamon, I use 1×6s for inner cover boards. The 1×2½s were too much work in my first LLH. The advantage of the 1×6s is more control over how much or how little of the hive is exposed at any one time. The other thing about LLH is the bees build brood near the entrance and store honey away from the entrance. So I recommend only open one entrance on an end.

These are much different than foundationless tbh. Its great how with the lang frames, you can check frames without having to move every bar to open. The tb types that all top bars sit flush are challenging, every little bee face comes up to see what the heck is going on! I have that type. They do explode with bees for sure.

It will be interesting to see how Kamon "reads" the frames given he's an experienced commercial beekpr. Right now I have a tbh that's utilized 20 bars already. I inspected it thinking ok, i should have honey, then brood and true enough, but there was brood, honey, drone. It was a laying fest. The blackberry is still in future here in western Oregon, but lots of pollen.

My long lang about 90% complete, similar setup as yours. I also put ventilation holes in the side gables. It holds 33 frames. Very heavy. I constructed out of 2x12 rough cut cedar. 3/4" plywood for the roof. Thinking of metal flashing for the roof cover. 1x3 pine slats for the inner cover. I think I made six of those with vent screens. Also considering putting a bee escape in the side gable.

@MerlinspopTBH
@MerlinspopTBH 3 жыл бұрын
I’m sure they spent a good amount of time reorganizing and moving honey and pollen around. When I kept a top bar hive, I found end entrances to be better. That way the brood was always first, then food and then honey furthest from the entrance. So in winter, the bees move in one direction. With a central entrance, you’ll have honey on both ends and in the winter they may not be able to get to honey on the other end.

Hey Kamon there should be slats of wood used as an "inner cover" then the bees can't get under the hinged lid/cover.

once you have the slats you can inspect sections of 2 frames at a time, and not disturb the whole hive, I have a homemade horizontal hive and my cover slats get real stuck down but not the hinged cover, best of luck with the horizontal hive buddy!

Well got my packages from Bob Binnie on the 3rd. Bees are doing great. Added Formic Pro to hives last week. That stuff is very toxic and you should probably use a respirator when putting it on the frames. Also caught my first swarm a few days ago and will transfer them to a 10 frame deep tomorrow. So in another 2 weeks will have to apply Formic Pro to them if the weather stays below 80*F. Craig Fr. VA / SML Bees

Yep the 25 i made had 1x4 slats as the cover. Looks nice Kamon. My one i over wintered is at 24 of 30 frames atm. Nice thing is being the enter from the one end where brood is most of the last 8 frames are honey. Went out to Farm and all is looking good. I thought after splits next weekend it would reduce them to like a 6 frame on the mother hives but they are building like crazy. Will have to keep good eye on them with the flow even tho they are being split 2 times. Already have boxs set up to put the 6 frame nukes that mated into being one we looked at was exploding and she made it back. Beautiful Black Queen like its Mom. Take care

Oh my, my name is Polly Bee Petter...how do you make sure the bees are never squashed!? How do you keep them warm in the winter and cool in the summer? Is that box air conditioned? Do they have access to PBS and CNN? Do you feed them refined SUGAR?!! Hehe...a little humor...but people ask some honestly stupid things. It's a box full of bugs and they crawl where they shouldn't and so....you get that snap crackle and crunch when the lid goes on/down. Just how it is.

The cover notch is supposed to be on the top not bottom. Many think its supposed to be an upper entrance but it is for ventilation only. I see so many videos of people having to constantly scrape the burr comb off their covers. If you put it on the right way the bee space is correct. I know your burr comb was from no cover at all but you will get more if you don't follow correct bee space and put the covers on the right way. Just letting you know since you aren't as familiar with em. Love the vids btw

@@poppys3728 I see. Thank you for your reply. Then the honey frames and brood frames are limited by the size of the horizontal hive (30 frames?). So if your colony is doing good you could not add additional frames like Ian Steppler, he stacks honey super up to 8 box high. Sorry to take so much of your time: So I assume that you get the honey frames from the hive one-by-one. Then you would have to shake the bees off of it ?
@poppys3728
@poppys3728 3 жыл бұрын
@@markspc1 Yes it is limited in size. Additionally, they are heavy and not very portable. However, when you do inspections you dont expose the entire hive and its less weight to deal with, since you dont have to pick up an entire box. I am not as young physically as my mind thinks i am, so this is a plus for me. I still have traditional Langstroths and will see which one I like the best.

I am really impressed with your horizontal hive. I was really surprised that you didn't have any queen cells with as many bees that you had. The inner covers was a great idea and I like the idea of the screen to keep the beetles out. Question: Which do you prefer, Horizontal or Langsthroth style hives? Is it possible for the bees to occupy every frame in the horizontal hive? Could there be a problem down the road if the bees can't grown upward? I have seen cut outs where the bees grown horizontally between floor joist and they seem to be happy with that aspect. Am I wrong? Do they prefer going upward or does it matter?
@davidlewis4179
@davidlewis4179 3 жыл бұрын
John your first question doesn't make sense. Kamon is working a long Langstroth hive (LLH) in this video. What I think you meant to ask is about the difference between the horizontal and stacked Langstroth hives. I have 2 horizontal hives that I over wintered this year. I'm 20 miles east of Syracuse NY for a location reference. Last year I harvested 60-70 pounds of honey from one LLH. My bees fill anywhere from 12 to 15 frames with brood of the 32 total frames. My first LLH is 2 years old now. And so far has come out of winter strong each year. To be honest I rolled my queen in my first LLH last spring and they still produced 60-70 pounds of honey! They were swarm strong the first of March last year and were queen less for almost 2 months and still produced... . You've answered your own question about their not needing to go up with the floor joist example.
