In this episode, it's all about wrenching and giving the E30 much-needed TLC. We do a thorough service of the engine, replace the timing belt, adjust the valves, replace the oil pan gasket... We also hun down a wild animal in the shop.

Instead of welding a bolt to the broken bolt, weld a nut to it (if the thread is OK use one the same thread size. Fill the hole with weld, the heat should break the rust grip. You can also put a larger nut over the smaller nut and weld it together, this is method I've used to remove sheared suspension unit bolts on Tanks which are torqued to 750nm with high strength locktite. Trust me it works a charm.

That feeling when you're torquing the subframe back up to the frame rail and the bolt just keeps spinning.....ugh. Your stomach turns around in knots, and it isn't just because you're upside down. Fortunately in my case, four new bolts coated with blue threadlocker made the problem go away. I would have tapped the hole out except that I couldn't find a tap that would go deep enough. Seriously.

Nice video on fixing up the E30. Since you working around the alternator you should probably replace the voltage regulator on the back. They are cheap and will leave you sitting on the side of the road on a rainy day. I always replaced them on all the old Mercedes I fixed up and kept the old one in the trunk as a back up. That mouse's family will be back for revenge and chew up the wiring in all the cars parked in the shop. :-)

So good job on that BMW!

Mice hate mint, so a quick and easy solution is to get pepper mint essential oil, and add a couple capfuls to about 500ml of water in a spray bottle. Just spray the solution across doorways, room corners etc, even engine bays. It'll keep them away completely, rather than having them still gaining access/sticking around, and having to catch them

Take it out and clean it the best you can, spray penetrating fluid in the hole where the 2 air hoses attach to let it soak in. After that put it in the freezer and after 5 min put it in hot/boiling water, repeat til you see the little valve close fully only the little square should be open. If you got any questions let me know I have my car for 2 years now and have learned a lot, sometimes the hard way.

A broken sub-frame bolt is obviously a large blot to remove and I like the idea of welding a nut on. For smaller bolts, I've seen left hand drill bits used with great success. Sometimes the drill bit itself removes the bolt without any need to use a screw extractor. I recently bought a set of high quality USA left hand drill bits just in case I needed them one day. One month later I had a broken bolt and they saved the day!

My dad taught me a trick for rounded or snapped bolts with a bit of metal left: put a vise grip on and turn them by gently hammering the handle. Was very helpful when i ronded a drain plug and the mechanics wanted to charge me for a new oil pan.

BMW thought of everything, especially the ease of oil pan removal! Thankfully it needs to be redone only as often as Herr Maus shows up…. Nice to get both taken care of 👍

I've had some luck with stuck side air valves by thoroughly cleaning them in an ultrasonic cleaner. Use penetrating oil and then heat cycle it a number of times in a pan of boiling water and the freezer. The cold/hot shock will free up the sliding valve. Sometimes it requires repeated ultrasonic cleaning as well. That way you can free up the sliding valve that is currently stuck in oxidized aluminium and other debris. So far I've managed to revive 4 out of 5 of these valves. After you've succeeded coat the valve with a thin spray of PTFE lubricant (and preferably repeat this every now and then).

I had one of those 83 e30 320i. Got it in a trade didn’t have a title and was pretty much impossible since I live in the US and that’s a gray market car here. It was neat ended up selling it to someone that made a track car out of it. Fun fact that ground strap on the hood is to help with radio interference. Before I learn that I was always wondered why the hell there was a ground strap going to the hood. Good video. Been working on BMWs since 1991. E30s I can do in my sleep.

My brother replaced the cold air intake valve on his '81 520i with a air slide valve used when installing LPG installations. He had the exact same problem with same engine and same part. That alternator tension bar and bolt is always knackered and is $$$ from the dealer but still available. Nice to see all this maintenance done in an easy to follow steps and format. Keep up the good work!
