UNIMOGlife just got better!
If you'd like to support us, we now have a 'wishlist' on www.buymeacoff...
This week we show you all about our tyre upgrade. At the end of the video we share our costs, since we've done it on a budget, the parts you need and what we would do differently next time.
To do this upgrade you need new tyres, most people either go for 395/85 R20s or 14R20s. Since these tyres require 10" rims, we also had and wanted to upgrade the rims to alloy Hutchinsons. These rims have a bigger off-set and therefore make the ride a lot more stable, which you will be able to see in the video. The bodyroll got a lot better!
Since the rims are thicker, you also need longer wheel studs, ten per wheel. To get them out you can either take the entire hub off and press them out, or do it like we did, hammer the studs out using an old nut on them, so you don't smash the thread of the stud. It worked surprisingly well!
Getting the new studs in is a bit tricky though. IF YOU HAVE A HIGH TORQUE RATTLE GUN this job will be easy and quick :D.
Well, we didn't so we manually had to do it with a ratchet and socket, which is a good workout and you will definitely be sore the day after.
We put the stud in from the back, as far as possible, and then put washers on (use bigger washers if possible, so they don't get stuck on the stud) and to pull it through, add the nut and start tightening it. It works well, but takes forever, so the rattle gun would make a quick job out of it.
Hutchinson rims are split rims and easy to take apart. We found a technique that worked well getting the tyres on the rims and when standing on the tyre it is not hard to get the second part of the rim and the nuts on again.
Since three of our rims, that we got from auctions in the US, came without the central tyre inflation part (there was just a big hole), we had to find a way of how to attach a valve.
We decided to cut a 1/4"NPT thread and bought bigger earth moving valves that fit perfectly. To make sure they stay in there and don't leak, we added some thread sealant and it worked perfectly fine.
The big valves made it a lot easier to seat the tyres without having to go to a tyre shop or using brake cleaner.
The ride now is so much more stable and so much better. We tested the new tyres in deep boggy sand and were happy with it as well (not getting bogged like in Broome again hopefully).
Parts list:
Six 395/85R20 tyres from a local tyre shop in Perth $5700
Six rims imported from the US $4000
40 longer studs from imparts (Febi Bilstein) $500 (air freight)
Earth moving valves $80
Three chucks for bigger valves $120
Comes to a total of $10400, which is way less then getting it from a one stop shop in Australia, but definitely a MUCH longer and more complicated process!

Wow, what an incredible adventure you two have been on. I can not even imagine doing what you two have done and most would have thrown in the towel years ago. Seeing Jele swinging that hammer is testimony that she is an incredibly strong person both physically and mentally. Patrick has somehow persevered through all the back breaking work and the never ending project. You are both truly exceptional in every way!

Congrats - great upgrade! Shipping is a nightmare, way to stay patient. My Mog didn’t come with a spare, so when I changed my tires out I had to get the Rim shipped - took 2 months and that was only 1200KM away! Truck is looking awesome!!

Awesome! Good luck hehe. It really isn't that hard ;) make sure to bent the bottom step as well and widen the mudguards at some point :) Also, we had to bent back the rear bottom bit of the front mud guards to avoid the tyres touching them when in full lock🙈

So, today I really wanted to know and then found you about Karsten and Maxime. Smile, now continue in German, so you do not forget our wonderful language. Unfortunately, it often goes too fast, especially when you are in the U.S., and in the countries of the old vultures on the road. Euer Upgrade, super.

Good results! I'm a bit confused however as I understood the valve connections are already US NPT thread? That proved the case with my UK project, sourcing I think German origin Hutchinson rims. I also had to chase up getting the split beadlock inserts to allow very low tyre pressure operation. I rejected the alternative runflat doughnut solid rubber inserts which are massively heavy. I've recently in principle also sourced new O rings from Hutchinson's UK contact, not too expensive and worth peace of mind I think to carry some spares. Mercedes referred me to the Gaggebau Unimog Museum for guidance on longer wheel studs and the washer type nuts and they came up with suitable Mercedes parts references No free lunches on any of this, but massive confidence rewards in sorting out the wheels and tyres ! I've gone Michelin XZL for a second time after 5 years with no tyre trouble but some cracked steel rims on the last truck. I sourced unused recent manufacture 'delivery takeoff' tyres much more cost effectively than new, trying 14R20 this time instead of 395/85 R20. Fractionally narrower but also fractionally taller and a slightly greater footprint. I've also gained the luxury of CTIS and have fitted isolating valves in the wheel hoses that will hopefully prevent leaks during lengthy parkups. A very inspiring build overall documented in your channel and good luck on your continuing travels !
@PatandJele
@PatandJele Жыл бұрын
Thank you! The rims came with a hole for the CTIS inflation valve that bolts to the rim, but we had to tap that hole in order to be able to fit the 1/4" NPT thread. We don't have beadlocks and also opted not to go for runflats due to the weight. We would love CTIS but it seems the axles for it are very rare for the 1700s not to mention the price tag on them... We just fashioned up a hose to inflate two tyres at once.

No we don't have inner beadlocks. It is one of the things we are thinking about getting but haven't had too much use for them to get serious about it.

Ouch, that was an expensive exercise. Did the new tyres make that much of an improvement in driving or handling or not getting bogged? I heard that the older AACO Mk3 ex-army trucks were better suited to the narrower tyres.

It was the best upgrade!!! Sooo much more stable and because they are tubeless, we can let them down more. Definitely makes a huge difference in sand. We would never wanna go back to the ADF cheese cutters anymore🙈🙈🙈 If you get rims in Australia they are crazy expensive. That's why we imported ours from overseas :)
