Long term review: Mobula 8 O3 edition

I have been flying the Mobula 8 with the O3 air unit for just over 6-months and I wanted to share my thoughts about living with this drone, how it flies, and if it is a good fit for you.

Thank you. I have been putting in the stick time which has been a luxury. Also, if you have never tried IGOW or other friendly competitions, I found they really helped focus and push me to try new things and get out of my comfort zone. Botgrinder also does challenges on his streams that I have really enjoyed as well.

Thank you, and it is a fantasticly fun drone to fly. Just remember, land before the battery dips below 7v (3.5volts per cell on 2s). If you do, dont panic, flip to angle mode and land line of sight if you can. If not, try to land blind gently

@@Nathan_Adams oh man I just did my first couple of packs and I’m IN LOVE! When u say 3.5 is that with load or without load? iE I can fly around to 3.3 or 3.4?

I think he means 3.5/7v total, because the O3 is sensitive to power supply below 7v and you might lose video. @@Shiitake0787

I can't wait to get into something like this. I have an Avata 2, which I've been having a blast with. The A2 noise is a big improvement over gen 1, but its still too loud for some situations. Once the goggles 3 get unlocked I'd like a fun little ripper to have in my toolkit. They look like a ton of fun.

Glad you are enjoying your Avata 2. The Mob 8 actually flys really similar to the Avata, but you can get into really tight spaces. I am still really torn with the 03 mobula. It is a great cruiser, and everything I said in there is still 100% correct, the one thing that really lacks is the ability to do aggressive freestyle and diving. With diving, the yaw wash out at the bottom of a dive is still so rough. I think if you were to lightweight the '03 with the flywoo kit, you probably could get a lot of that performance back. But that does mean you're making an exposed air unit less durable.

I bought the o3Lite, but used an HDZero WhoopLite. But I broke 1 FC and 2 frames learning. So....I rebuilt it into a 2" Toothpick. Flies very smooth and is definitely more durable. Very quiet. Sub250 Nanofly20 2" Micro Frame Kit but had to cut out 2 small bits of the carbon frame for the motor plugs to fit.

Very nice!!! I love 2 inch toothpicks. What is your all up weight? Also, you may already be aware, but be careful when cutting and sanding carbon, that dust can mess up your lungs really bad.

I've been flying an analog version for the past few months, indoors. Super nimble. Probably the best 2S, 2-inch whoop I've ever flown.

I love all of Happy Models analog whoops! As Colin Chapman said, "simplify and add lightness". Nothing beats a super light woop, especially indoors.

@@Nathan_Adams I flew the guts out of my old Snapper 7. Lovely little 1S, but it has an F3 FC. BF 3.5 doesn't cut it anymore. I burned out a motor, and retired it. It was a fun flyer, but I prefer a 2S whoop. I'm gonna get a second Mob8 as a backup for this one. I should get a few years out of this platform.

Really like this quad as well, but the biggest problem for me is video jello under sunny condition. Do you have a solution for that?

Yes, get a set of ND Filters. If the jello is only occurring on bright days, a snap on nd filter will fix it. If the jello happens on days where it is not super bright, make sure the camera screws are tight (I had one side back out on my) and make sure your props are relatively fresh.

Just getting into FPV, going with DJI video. Still practicing on SIM, but I’m thinking this quad with a Runcam Nano camera to save some weight and cost. Will be flying mostly indoor and backyard. Am I on the right track?

If you just want to gently cruise around and get footage, the Mob 8 is great. The one downside to going with the run cam nano version is there is no onboard recording, so if you're looking to get good video, your left only with the DVR on the goggles which is okay. You can always upgrade later to the 03 version if you want higher quality video. If you're looking to fly more freestyle, flip, spins dives, etc... It is probably one of your better small drone options for DJI. Because of the weight, even with the smaller air unit, it can be a challenge to fly indoors because of the power/speed needed to compensate for the heavier drone. This is pretty much why analog is king when it comes to indoor flying, followed by Avatar HD/walksnail and HDZero. For backyard freestyle, depending on the size of your backyard, with DJI, three or three and a half inch seems to be the Goldilocks size. They are small enough and light enough to be fun in a smaller environment, quiet enough not to disturb too many people, but fast enough really to tear it up outside and deal with a little wind.

I had to use the Mob 8 for a gig that required an ultralight 03 air unit feed for a live broadcast, I have been tempted to get another one and drop HDZero or a Vista on it for more of a playful flying small quad

It's sub 100g if you just naked the 03 leaving the camera stock. Mine comes in at 95g with a 550mah

The mob8 use to be my favorite until I got the fly lens 85 lite. That one makes you forget your flying a 85mm. Also it doesn’t have that dive wash out at all.

@@robbeshandpan63 from my now limited experience with the Flylens, the Flylens. The powertrain is pretty similar and because it is lighter, it gets better flight time

Are you seeing breakup in the video or signal loss at 600ft? I have pushed the mob8 with ELRS well over 1000 feet and have found break-up where I normally would find it with an O3 air unit.

Have an O3 unit on a Pavo Pico but thinking of swapping it to the Mobula 8 after seeing this video. Have you flown the Pico? Bought a Mobula 8 analog that's already on the way. Didn't even think to look into an O3 Mobula.

I think I like the 85mm platform better for the O3, and the mob 8 is great for light freestyle or cinematic cruising. I have flow the pavo pico and the jello was just a little more than I wanted to deal with

@@Nathan_Adams thanks for the reply. I should have mentioned I have a Pavo20 that flies A+ for cinematic. But I'm also still new, just changed my throttle rate and rate profile on the Pico and am flying like a stable pro with it, or at least how I would expect it to fly. Night and day. Loving FPV. Looking forward to the analog Mobula8 to be able to push it more than the Cetus X I learned on.

@@Nathan_Adams Yeah, if all the screws on the pico aren't torqued perfectly the jello is terrible. I have gotten it figured out now though so I don't have any jello with it. I got the mobula 8 analog a couple months back and I like it so much I got the HD version to try out. Going to put it together tonight and try it out tomorrow. It looks like it'll be a fun little drone. I always have a blast with the analog one.
