Picked up my 2020 Soul EV a couple of weeks ago and it feels solid as a brick -- no squeaks or rattles whatsoever. So though I was sad it no longer had the panoramic moonroof, I guess the tradeoff (vault-like solidity) was worth it.

We bought our 2016 e-Golf at end-of-lease because... we love it and they were NOT getting it back. Sure, it's low range -- but we don't drive that far on a daily basis and there's this thing called "a rental" for those three or four longer trips we need to make each year.

I have this convo here in DC all the time. My 2013 LEAF was hit head-on and totaled, so I just got a 2016 Soul last week. People always ask me about range and I tell them them it meets most of my needs, and they they invent ways where it doesn't. My work commute is 6 milea roundtrip and a few blocks extra for my kid's school. I can get to most places in the DC suburbs just fine and we typical rent a car for the occasional road trip.

We've had similar experience with our '17 Soul EV+. Great car! Only issue was the electric actuator for the parking brake failed and needs to be replaced. Kia picked up the car on a flatbed trailer at our home in Tucson, AZ and took it to a Kia dealer in Phoenix for repair - covering the repair cost plus a rental car under warranty. Otherwise, no issues. We did pay substantially less than you for our lease, about $110/mo with taxes.

Alex, Hyundai offered a Hydrogen powered Tucson prior to the Nexo. I think you mean that the Nexo was the first purpose-built HFC crossover. The Hydrogen Tucson was available starting in 2014.
@rizzlerazzleuno47335 жыл бұрын
I like the explanation of why a hydrogen car is practical for you. As to not having to drive longer distances in Calif, you are lucky to have a job and support team that makes flying a better alternative to driving, but for many folks due to cost, transport to and from the airport, need to stop at places between airports, need for a vehicle at the destination, etc. flying is not a practical alternative. Even though the mythical road-trip looms large in Hollywood fantasies, studies show that the folks 30 and under rarely drive more than a few hundred miles for fun or vacations, unlike the boomer generation that took lots of long distance car trips. Your experience with the hydrogen car should not be all that different from a similar gasoline car other than the limited location of the hydrogen fueling stations. Enjoyed the landscape in this episode. 🙂

6:05 I think charging ports are poorly located on most EV vehicles. Best location would be on the right side of the car, because that's where the charging poles are when the car is parked on the side of the road near a charging station - so no need to pass those thick cables over the hood or roof of the car. A charging port in front of the car is not bad, but in my city, there are always two parking places at the charging stations on the side of the street: if you were to find a place only in the front parking spot, again you will have those long cables rubbing against your hood in order to reach the charging port kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Zr5-mJxl1c3VoKc.html

HFC is a dying technology, at least for passenger cars. In the 10 plus years it has been around (for passenger cars: It's been around in other applications since at least the Apollo missions) it has still not expanded beyond California. That should tell you something right there. It has some pluses for sure, but the negatives - unless you live in California - are just too great to overcome. We bought our 2015 Soul EV used with 15k miles on it when it was about a year old. We unfortunately had to have the main battery pack and battery management system replaced at 40k miles, which was covered under warranty at least. The only issue with that process was that it took almost 2 months for the Kia dealer to receive the replacement parts. Kia was nice enough to offer us a loaner Kia Forte for that period as our car was only getting about 40 miles range on the original battery, but it was a big step down in comfort going from the Soul EV+ to a base model Forte, not to mention having to go to the gas station instead of charging at home.
