I set myself a task: could I build an ash longbow within a day?
USA Merch teespring.com/stores/lone-arc...
UK Merch teespring.com/stores/lone-arc...
I think that, at the zenith of warbow and longbow manufacture in the 14th and 15th centuries, bowyers must have made bows in less than a day - driven as they were by the very same forces that drive manufacturers today. Time is money, then as now, and goods have to be made within price and to a fixed standard. So making a bow in a day was - in my opinion - routine all those years ago. The question for me was: could I make a bow in a day? I work with hand tools in the autumn woods and make a simple ash longbow with a draw weight of 40+ lbs and all done within five hours. It's a simple bow, but it works. Hopefully encouragement to all beginner bowyers that a bow can be made by someone new to bow making and can - if wished - be done quite rapidly.
Thank you for watching.

Mick Grewcock mick i have a question for you, since its really hard to find ash staves here where i live, would an ash beam or board be good to make a bow?
@MickGrewcock
@MickGrewcock 6 жыл бұрын
You could make a bow from from a beam or board, though I have never done so personally. It's important that the grain lies correctly along the length of the wood. Check on the internet; I am sure there are instructionals on building a board bow. When I was stuck, I bought a pre-tapered try-laminate stave which I tillered - it's a good way to learn about tillering and you get a bow quickly. It's not the same as a self bow but I made two that way and still have them - one is 40lbs and the other nearly 90lbs. Mick

I am an archer and occasional longbowman. I heard a story of a guy who turned up at Kinver for a field shoot where many folk used longbows but there were other categories. When he arrived having thought that there was no room for him so he`d brought no kit, he was informed that if he wanted to he could shoot, so he cut himself a hazel switch and in short order a very poor bow resulted. He borrowed some arrows for the day from a friend. AND HE DIN`T COME LAST!!!

Hello Colin, thank you - very pleased that you enjoy my videos. I do hope to show that anyone with a few tools, a bit of wood and some effort can begin to make simple - maybe not good, maybe little more than passable - bows and begin an exploration of this heritage loaded craft. To be honest, every one of my bows has faults but it's the learning that counts for me and if I can nudge others to try then it's worth it! Than you for watching and commenting. Atb, Mick

I just found this video after spending 6 hours splitting an 8 foot stretch of oak trunk down to quarters and dragging them up to my house. A first for me. This is a very relaxing way to end the day. Soothing for a sore back. I intend to make a longbow, which will be another first for me. I think I'll buy a cabinet scraper. I also have a rasp, a hatchet, a plane and a bushcraft knife. Any advice you could offer for working with oak would be greatly appreciated. Once again, lovely video.

Love the videos. I’ve been a traditional bow hunter for nearly forty years now (even managed to kill a few deer). I’m a Michigan hillbilly with several acres of woods and lots of time on my hands now that the coronavirus has put so many of us out of work. Looks like I need to make a longbow. Thank you for a little inspiration.
