The jet age began with four-engine aircraft, and they ushered in new possibilities for aviation.
Although two and three-engine jets followed soon, quadjets retained a key role thanks to both their range and capacity.
However, this is coming to an end now, with more improvements in twin-engine efficiency and declining demand for the largest aircraft.
This is the story of quadjets, from Transatlantic Enabler To Uneconomic Giants.

EXACTLY! I live close enough to an airport to have a binocular view of takeoffs and landings. There is one, ONE, 747 using the airport and when it comes in and takes off theres a sense of presence that the twins lack. Let alone the sheer size of it. It's gotten so bad that I know when this particular 747 comes in and leaves, the airport used to have A380s but those left when the THING started and they havent come back :/

Saying that something is the best is very relative since it depends in the definition of what is good. If you find a quad-jet better than a twin-jet, go ahead and buy one. Airlines have probably a different definition of what is the best, so they may instead buy a twin-jet.

Humans don't weigh as much as cargo. The biggest two engine cargo transport out there is... The Kawasaki C-2? It can carry 37 tonnes. The 777F can carry 103 tonnes, which is still 50 behind the 747 and An-124, and it's much more delicate.

The Bae 146/Avro RJ’s relative silence stemmed primarily from its GEARED turbofan engines. The fan spun at a slower speed because of the gearbox and thus the fan tips did not break the sound barrier. This is 30 years before the latest geared turbo fan by Pratt and Whitney that currently power the A320neo and A220.

Even if they wanted to, Airbus couldn’t make a cargo A380. The maximum payload of the A380 was designed to be just enough to haul a full load of passengers and baggage. Cargo is a lot heavier for the same volume as passengers and thus requires a much higher takeoff weight than what the A380 could have ever achieved

I think we will see a quad jet super bulk freighter. 4 GE-9X are suitable for 840 T MTOW (200 T larger than the AN-225, but looking similar). The aircraft weights would compose: 320 T OEW; 320 T PL; 320 T Fuel, with the latter two being limited to a total of 520 T. The cargo bay would be 7 metres high and 6-sided in cross-section to allow for wheels (24 x 35 tonne capacity - 6-axle per side compared to 7-axle for AN-225) and loads as wide as 11 metres. It would have a cargo bay 60 metres long. In essence it could carry 4 F-35 fighters just rolled in. It could carry aircraft hulls as large as the 777X. It could drop some huge water loads on bush fires. It would a heavy stand area between the wheels and special detachable legs for loading really heavy cargo. While there is only one AN-225, a heavy lift aircraft with good military and other applications should sell in the hundreds.
@TheOwenMajor
@TheOwenMajor 3 жыл бұрын
It would also destroy any runway it landed on. The A380 was already limited on the number of runways that could handle it's weight. You aren't going to see it any time soon.
@peteregan3862
@peteregan3862 3 жыл бұрын
It shouldn't damage runways - it only has the wheel load of anA350-900. 7 axles per side like the AN225 would reduce wheel load to 28 T/wheel. 8 axles per side would give 26.25T/wheel. But the main issue is to have sufficient spacing between each wheel.

One engine planes do have serious issues including maintenance and safety. Engines mounted inside of the tail are harder to maintenance than the ones below the wings. Also a single engine failure would be deadly. If a Cessna has it’s only propeller fail the pilot can usually land on a road or felid as their plane is very light.

I will always have a soft spot for quad jets. They spawned the genesis of the jet age and long haul nonstop travel. The Comet, 707, and DC-8, and later Concorde, showed us what was possible and what the future of air travel would look like. Even though quad jets are quickly being retired or being used solely for freight, they represent the biggest changes in civil aviation.

13:48 This frame proves that the pictures are not to scale. I think that the age of the quad jet may simply be on hiatus until demand for air travel increases again. However, by the time the quads come back, it will be hard to say what the planes will run on. As for the A380, I'm surprised JAL and All Nippon didn't take them on. In 1990's Japan, air travel was so popular that they used 747s as commuter jets.

Both aircraft were way ahead of their time........ in particular, the Comet. Concorde had the first "sort of fly by wire" system and many other very clever advances and with the Comet........ the shape of the windows and the materials used for her construction. Will someone please explain the physics of quadjets needing to run all 4 engines once at cruising altitude. In my simple little mind it seems like 4 engines would only be needed for takeoff and the initial clime.

I was born in Newfoundland please take time to get the pronunciation right. Here's how: Take loof in as in _aloof_ but make it one syllable as in _noof_ then say finland but with a very hard D in "Did your plane _land_ ?" NOOF-in-lan'D not New-Found-Land It's not pronounced as distinct separate words as is the very common mistaken pronunciation. A lot of Newfies cringe at hearing the mispronunciation but are usually too reserved to point out, I normally wouldn't make a big deal out of it but my people's history & identity deserve respect like any others. Thanks ❤

The quad jets are over. Look to the business and private jets. The new Gulfstream G800 have a range of 14000km, that will say from Amsterdam to Los Angeles. I think that Airbus with his develop partners gonna work on fuel and noise reduction. And a greater range.

You guys speak too soon, the IL-96 400 will be a four engine jet... And having flown in the A340 a few times, it is insuring a trouble free flight with four engines peace of mind over the Atlantic... They can be also efficient for the right reasons other than economic ones... One of them been trouble free 30,000 hours of flight time on "on wing" power been used al half power VS 15,000 hours or less of twin engine power at 100% and instead of adding more fuel efficiency savings you are adding more maintenance to more expensive engines and down time of the aircraft....

Modern jet engines are only used at full power for a few minutes at takeoff. Whether a quadjet or a twinjet, the engines only run at 20-25% in cruise.

@@paveldeveraux2729 - Yeah. I'm just saying that regardless of the decision to use four engines or two engines, they are usually only used at less than 30% in cruise. You don't have to work the engines harder to accommodate a two engine aircraft. The airplane manufacturer sizes their selected engine appropriately.

I like quadjets more, my favourite plane is a quadjet, the Airbus A340. I'm sure quadjets may appear in the future for low-emissions aeroplanes, because if the required power cannot be achieved by two engines, three or four may become more popular again. For example, a long-haul hydrogen aeroplane may need three or four engines if they can't get enough from two. While two engines can be very efficient, there'll come a point when twinjets reach their limit, and quadjets may come back. Aviation is possibly over-reliant on ETOPS. ETOPS could fail one day and quadjets will make a comeback.✈️

I've heard one of a design of a DC-10 have a fatal flaw. Not to mention its third engine on its tail! If that goes out or at least blows up, then the whole plane can go bye bye with people in it! That's as far as I've heard. I can see why airlines like Air New Zealand switched to a quad jet Boeing 747s after DC-10. Furthermore Airbus went with a smaller quad jet design the A340 instead of DC-10 or Lockheed L-1011. Probably because of the fear of a fatal flaw design on tri jets? Personally I'm fine with new ETOPS twin jets but I prefer an A380 because of size and sheer comfort of the widest fuselage mean having the widest economy class seats. I guess I have to wait for upcoming B777x. Haven't flown A350s but A330/340 seats were cramped! A 9 abreast config 777 is good though. I haven't had fear of flying in twin jet when I was young esp with B767s.

Are smaller engines unable to have the SFC that bigger engines do? Otherwise I don't see how engine number is an issue. If you have A320NEOs in your fleet, having a long haul quad jet that also uses the same PW1100Gs would save a lot on maintenances too.

Aren’t we forgetting the Convair 880? And 727 whisperliner? I can hardly yell that loud, never mind a whisper. And Concorde being phased out for more efficient higher capacity aircraft. Not ten minutes later, more efficient higher capacity aircraft being phased out for smaller aircraft. They’d be flying CRJ’s transatlantic if the could find a way. And why not fly over Antarctica? McMurdo-Williams Field is surely large enough, and density altitude couldn’t possibly be an issue.

On the Atlantic run, I don't think the 380/747 really work. There are too many airlines flying that route. But, the distances to Asia from the United States warrant the use of quadjets like the above mentioned aircraft. But, the idea of using single aisle aircraft on the Atlantic run is absurd. Boeing should retool the 767 to be a smaller, more efficient aircraft to complete with the 321.
