I seldom watch a video this long but I did tonight! I must say you are an excellent teacher who has a wealth of knowledge and experience! Really appreciate everything you said about this CNC machine. I am not sure I will eventually make the jump as I shall be 79 in a couple of months! However, you have just gotten me much closer to the jump! Thanks a million! Thank you for the complete review. I just got my Longmill 30x30 setup and just chomping at the bit to start making chips. One great aspect of the Longmill for me was it's capability to be modified. Due to limited space in my garage i could not fit a 30x30 machine but, like you mentioned, I knew I wanted bigger than 30x12. With just a few cuts in the aluminum extrusion and the lead screws on the Y axis I was able to cut 175mm off the Y axis. This will give me around 26" which is much better than the 12" with the smaller model. Looking forward to more great content

A very good "in-depth" review, Garrett. Thanks again for a great production. As an affordable option, you can't really go wrong. So long as the buyer knows just what they require, and the Longmill will meet those requirements- it becomes an absolute no-brainer. Repeatability and accuracy may be of secondary importance for many! There is a story there!

Hi Joe. I got it check for accuracy. I keep forgeting to do repeatability. Longmill is a young machine that has growing pains as it adopts to the market demands and needs. I think you'll start seeing some major upgrades coming very soon.

Problem is, the buyer has no idea what to expect until they order and purchase. After it arrives, it is SUPPOSED to be a simple build and run. Forget that!!! I have had mine for 3 months and to date have not been able to run anything serious. Have made some very simple items, but once I attempted to make something serious, a sign of 20" x 16", it carved about three hours and WHAM just started carving wherever it chose to. Totally ruined my project. So, I tried to make the same sign in a smaller design, a 16" x 10", and darned if it didn't do the exact same thing!!! It is really just junk. And SIENCI is ADAMANT they will NOT accept a return. I reckon they are totally about the money, and will not stand to have to refund any of it. I should have known when I seen that on their website that it was a HUGE red flag.

Thanks, you are by far the best. I have watched hundreds of videos on CNC you take everything to the next level. Getting ready to buy a CNC almost bought another CNC which would of cost around a $1000 more and from what I see this is a better CNC. I going to tell everyone I know about you. Hey Garrett, GREAT video! Nice work explaining thru everything, very thourough in deed. When I purchased my Shapeoko XXL the info available for the Longmill was pretty scarce, and man they are...like 30 minutes from where I live, bummer. I like everything you pointed out and like the acme thread over the belt system, though I have not encountered any issues, but I certainly cannot cut at that speed with the Shapeoko. When time comes to get another machine I will most certainly focus my attention on the Longmill. Also I saw very recently that the Makita router will outlast the Dewalt at least four times...that is stinking huge, my Dewalt only lasted a year, I'm on my third one in two and a half years. The brushes are hard to get and take forever to receive them, like 3 weeks, that socks. Anyways I'm rambling, keep up the great work, you're doing awesome!

Hi. I am also retired, but I'm 77 years old. I bought the Bob's CNC Quantum. It was really fun putting it together (around 100 pieces), and I learned so much that I probably wouldn't have learned by buying a machine that was already basically together. However, even though I haven't yet run into anything the machine wouldn't do, I still wonder if I will. I think that if I had it to do over again, I'd follow Garrett's advice and go with the Longmill. Now, I have to wait until I can afford to make a change. So far, I've found that it's best to listen to Garrett.

Nice work. I'm cutting my teeth learning this hobby on a small format (13"x13") CNC router (Snapmaker 2.0 A350), and intend to earn income from that learning experience, to fund purchasing a larger format CNC Router - and this review really brings home what to look for. I have been looking deeper into the Longmill- and it's community of users. There are many makers out there who are quite happy with this machine. Lots of content out there and most all are happy with the machine, its capabilities, and its performance. As with ALL machines in the class, there are give and take aspects to be considered, but yes- this machine is solid in its own right. At the price point, it would be hard to go wrong. My own son is a fan, in fact. We will be looking at one as an upgrade to our SainSmart 3018.

I'm glad you are as impressed with the machine after you assembled and began using it as you were when you researched and bought it. I don't know if I would have stood on the gantry to show rigidity, but point made. I thought the machine could handle the forces of the 1/4 dia X 1.00 dp down mill cut but the tool probably would not. 100 in/min seemed severe. Just no place for the chips to go. I didn't think the up cutter would fare much better. I'm surprised and impressed. It spit out material like crazy and cut a nice clean and deep slot. I'm used to cutting lots of different metals. I select tools, feed rates, depth of cuts and type of tool path based on the material I'm removing. I keep getting more aggressive with my feed rates and depth of cuts in wood. I don't have a Long Mill. I'm impressed with the Long Mill capabilities so far. And the price point is extraordinary for that level of performance.

I didn't explain it right regarding the 1/4 bit. It was a 3/4 flute lengths. I was part the flies. That's why I couldn't go any deeper

Great video and advice, I didn't see the longmill when I was shopping around. I think it's a awesome machine in its class! The price is great too! If had saw this machine when I was looking, I would have been very interested! I am happy with my purchase of the onefinity but it was an extremely long wait! Luckily I had lots of projects to get out of the way first. I love the fact that the longmill is made in Canada, that's a big bonus for me! Onefinity also from Canada so it had my vote too! But it cost a lot more in the end. It's easier for me to deal with companies in Canada because of taxes, money exchange and duties. I think you've made a great choice!!!

Garrett. Outstanding! I am a 71 year old retiree who is setting up a work shop. My next addition will be a CNC machine. I have been exploring all machines in this price range. I stumbled on the Longmill a week ago and have read all the info. that I could find. Your presentation confirmed that the Longmill will be my next purchase. The engineering, simplicity and cost can’t be beat. The best part is the enthusiasm and commitment of the staff. Their goal seems to be to make the best CNC machine possible. I’ve been going back and forth for months about which 30x30 machine to go with and hadn’t really considered the longmill until recently. After watching this video and lots of your others I’m sold. The ability to run at the depth and speeds shown here is impressive for sure, as well as the rigidity. I will be ordering mine this week! Looking to put it to work immediately, as I am on the waiting list for a Cnc4newbie 5x5 r&p machine being released in February I am hoping to pick up as well lol. Luckily I feel that the ROI is solid on the Longmill

Garrett, you continue to amaze. I was aiming for a Onefinity 50 in my dream world. But when I realized you chose this machine, I knew it could do more than I would ever ask of it. Thus far my biggest concern is the durability and longevity of those V-wheels and their wear on the aluminum. I'm pretty sure I will be ordering a machine in the next week or so, and if this machine meets my needs I will order through your link. I doubt I will be putting the hours into it as you have so if it has held up as well as it should for production, it may be my choice!!!

Hello Garrett, I have been watching your channel for a while now. Through my research and with me Military Engineering background I found the Sienci Longmill about two months ago and ordered one based on the lead screws and the engineering aspect of it. After watching this video and knowing that you can place ~150 lbs on the carriage rail I am convinced I made the right choice. I did not buy the dust shoe but did so today using your link, In also purchased a second set of ACME nuts so I can used the jam nut method on all but the Z axis due to clearance for the backlash nut. I have not built mine yet due to building a work shed is not completed. Thank you for all your videos. I have learned a great deal about using my VCARVE Pro.

My super quick review. The price is right. Had some QC problems with parts. Got replaced. If you are a tinkerer this a nice product. I run 2 lasers of my own with 20 years of experience. Had other hobby CNC's, built my own small CNC (12" x 12") just for practical experience. And have run commercial mills and CNC for about 3 years. Glad I got the biggest they own. And yes get the biggest you can as practical. Your room size may dictate the size of your machine. I got a shape co compact router for my cutter a year ago.

Thanks for the in-depth review and showing off of the features of the Longmill. I too was convinced when I had questions and actually dealt with Chris or Andy well over a year and a half ago (Build version 2 of the 30x30). They have had some QC issues in the past (many from suppliers and a few internal as they were growing so rapidly) and have attacked them head on and resolved them - the sign of a caring company. I went back and forth on machines and it was this Company and their responsiveness that pushed me over the edge and I am more than happy with my 30x30. Now with the ground up re-building of gSender (I was one of the original gSender Alpha testers), I agree that this company will be on top in 2 years. More on the way, I understand too!

Fantastic review! Have been trying To decide between a few different CNC, now I made up my mind! Couple things you might have mentioned… one other reason the long mill is less expensive is the exchange rate on the US dollar. Also, for those of us that have 3D printers, they give you enough in the replacement parts that we could 3d print replacement parts on your own and not have to wait for a shipment. Might also mention that all the this is “open source” Loved the testing and the little ride you took. Might think about showing a completed project. I would love to see your flag/eagle project done on the long mill. Would love to see you test the bits that they sell with the long mill. I wanted to order your surfacing bit, but the discount code doesn’t seem to work. (I am planing on ordering the starter set tomorrow after I pay on my CC.)

Hi Craig. I think I'll go ahead and make that flag. I sell my own bits so will not test theirs. Speacking of bits, the surfacing bit code is "surfacing bit" Regarding all the other things you mentioned. It is hard to cover every detail. This took 3 days of scripting, many rehersals and retakes. Despite 7 solid days of working on this single video, I still see things I miss after I'm done. That's just life.

Great rundown of the machine, very in depth. For my money (at the same price and work area as the longmill 3030) the Shapeoko 4 has my vote by a country mile. (I owned a shapeoko 3 for some years) no 3d printed parts and an extremely rigid bed. The longmill looks to be a great option though and after your video I realise it's a lot more rigid than I originally thought

Garrett, I will echo what many others have said already, thank you for this video. I have been researching now for a month or so and been agonizing over which machine to get. You are the only one that I have come across that actually put the machine to the test to the point of failure. In addition, I was absolutely blown away to see actually standing on the machine! I'm sold! One question if you could comment on. I live in Michigan so in the winter my workspace can get down to into the low 30's F. On the days I am going to work in my shop I heat it up to about 70 degree which only take about 1 hour. Is there any concern on what effect this could have on the electronics? Another company I asked this question to said to just leave the control on 24/7. Not a big deal although I noticed on your machine the control says to turn it off when not in use. Is this something I need to be concerned about?

Hi Jay. First of all thank you for the compliments regarding this video. I think you're going to really enjoy this new crafter going to get into. As far as the electronics, it's subjective. Electronics don't start to suffer until they get extremely hot or extremely cold. Sometimes I leave them on, sometimes I turn them off. I've never had an issue at all. In summary, I don't think you have anything to be concerned with either way.

Jay, you're so welcome! Before you start cutting, you're going to want to warm up your palm router and the bearings that are inside. To do this when it is really cold, I recommend running it at a speed of 2/6 for 1 minute then a speed of 4/6 for 1 minute. Then you are ready to cut! Everything else in the shop will be fine with those temperature levels unless you have a high moisture content in the air and condensation forms on the electronics! Don't be concerned with temperature unless you get into the -20 degrees region. I would recommend insulating your shop if that happens! If you ever upgrade to a spindle, it's important to warm it up by running it at a low/medium speed for a minute then a medium/ high speed for a minute. Typically 12000rpm then 15000 rpm.

Liked, subscribed and rang the bell. 😁 When pressing a nut into a pocket, many times I find it easier to run a bolt or screw and washer through from the other side and just tighten to pull the nut in. After looking at various videos on KZfaq, I wanted a Onefinity Journeyman X-50 (48" cutting on X) but the price is just a bit out of reach and I don't want to go without eating for a month or two. So, I decided to settle for OpenBuilds 1515 (46" cutting on X). Looks to be strong enough. Then I saw you riding on this machine! I like that the Y rails are supported and Z uses MGN rails. I would prefer that the plastic parts were injection molded rather than printed. But then, I can print them with alterations if desired. I'm just disappointed that the X is limited to 31" cut. If I use the magnet mounted dust boot, how much more of that do I lose? Is it possible to get longer X extrusions and leadscrew? I'd like it to mill the 48" piece that the Journeyman X-50 can. On the X axis, not tilling.

Hi Village! I've got a little surprise for you. But first, I'll respond to your comment. Thanks for the tip about inserting the nuts. Great idea. I'll get this passed on. I get your concern for the size thing and printed parts. There are pros and cons. The major pro is design mods are much less expensive. But overall, I was not bothered with the printed part after if was built. You lose about 1.5" of travel with the dust sgoe vracket. So that hurts just a tad. Fortunately, we rarely use the full size of the machine. But...and you're gonna like this... Longmill is currently working on a bigger machine. I have been asked to test it. I expect it will be available in the next couple months. I don't know the specifics yet but I have seen the design. Very cool, and kept with the Longmill tradition of designing with smarts. So stand by...

I wanted to make arcade panels didnt know much about cnc, so I got a 3d printer to see how it all kinda works out. Then year later i get the x carve and it was too small for a lot of arcade stuff without tiling, but it paid for itself with other stuff I didn't even imagine.. so I got the bigger queenbee and all is well, wife is getting into the x carve and learning how to use it, so yeah I spent a lot to get it right size wise with two machines but its evolved into something really neat

Hi JJ. Max z travel is 4.5" (112 mm). Regarding spoilboard, it works much better with one on top of the table. You will start to lose z capability if you go to table surface. Make sense?

I have X Carve 1000x1000 upgraded. Good machine. The dewalt is junk two in two years. Inventables replaced the first one free and also gave me brushes to fix it. Very good company love them , but I hate the dam belts and the plastic guide wheels. I still love the machine but would love to try the longmill. Money to tight right now maybe someday. Looks like a great machine

Many years ago I had purchased a machine that is far more rigid (and it likely weighs at least twice as much as your Longmill in less than one quarter of the footprint), but the disadvantage was that the machining envelope is very tiny (~6x6 inches). Yes, it can cut steel and aluminum, which are the main things I need at the moment. However, at the moment it is also necessary to be able to machine much larger pieces and with my machine I can't stick something out of the machine as the table itself is the Z axis, so I would need to build a slave Z axis and deal with all the fun of that. The other issue is the manufacturer of my machine is no longer in existence and some potential replacement parts are just going to be impossible to obtain (one piece in particular takes either a 5 axis CNC or multiple different setups and the tolerances directly impact the overall machine accuracy - in other words, a one-off replacement part would likely cost more than just purchasing one of many of the currently produced machines). In short, yes, you are correct that it may be much better to purchase a machine that is big enough for the foreseeable use cases.

It's just orphaned (it is called a BoXZY and those of us who own them have no idea who, if anyone, has the source code/ design files/ etc. should we need support) and not exactly what I need at the moment. It was also much, much more expensive than other machines. In part, the increased rigidity was the reason I made the decision in the first place. I could probably run it over with my pickup truck and it would barely notice.

Your video get me really thinking for that machine, and probably i will buy one. I am a bit concern about their new version, it seems they change the extrusion. I did some static simulation for the double L extrusion and the deflection is a bit better compared to XC50 with two 37mm shaft guides. The only downside is that deflection with those double L extensions is not only in Z direction, but it twist the axis, aprox 0.17 mm deflection at 200 N, it also looks very similar to the broken mill part, if you watch carefully probably you will notice also the twist, that i think was the main reason for the brake.

Watching the video my first impression was that the mill face the knot, it's harder, the spinel rpm drop, the cutting rate drop and the feed become too fast for the lower cutting rate. But later on when watch it few more times it looks all start when the mill is pushed up by the cutting force,and this cause also a twist. Anyway, great video, looks decent machine for the price, will know in a few days. I suppose all routers in that class will have a similar problems, to prevent this twist need really rigid structure, and also symmetric. I am used to a large machines, will see how will handle with this one :)

I've found over many years that a cutting tool with a length of cut greater than 4X the diameter is fragile and deflects a lot. When cutting full dia slots at full LOC at profile cut feed rates, the tool doesn't have much of a chance. There's a lot of tangential forces on the tool and chip evacuation is a problem. A down cutting bit would surely not be the tool to use for deep slot cutting. Chips are pushed down into the slot, making the situation worse. I was surprised you got as far as you did with that elevated feed rate. Maybe if not for that knot, the tool may have somehow completed the cut. That would have been surprising. When that up cut bit completed the cut, I was impressed. I'm rethinking my feed rates and depths of cuts.

Larger cuts, at higher feed rates or larger cutting tools removing more material, exerts more forces and always has a fail point. Pieces can move, be ripped out of vises or clamps can fail to hold a piece in place at some point. Failure of the cutting tool before any of this happens seems to be the best condition that can occur.

Very good review it allowed me to evaluate the machine from my eye as an engineer. The most difficulty I have evaluating these machines is to get an apples to apples comparison. I think the long mill offers just the minimum and the other bits and pieces can be added based on your preference. In particular I am referring to the software and operation interface. Hey John, sorry for such a delayed response it's been a crazy week! Are you meaning the black mat that I have on the floor? Or are you referencing the spoilboard? The mat that I have on the floor is just a rubber mat that protects the endmills from hitting the hard floor if I drop one of them. It saves my endmills from breaking! I think I heard you say the 30x30 was the footprint of the machine. What is the XYZ limits of travel on the 30x30? I don't see it on the website either. If in fact it is 30x30 cutting area then what is the footprint? I was sold on the Onefinity Woodworker 32x32 but do have some things to consider on getting a Longmill. As a Cnc machinist that started in Cnc when we run them on paper tape im retired from Lockheed Martin after 35 years before that i was in manual job shops. I was impressed with your background and love your videos im curious about the plastic and the Delron wheels but considering what these Cnc are used for should be fine but i ask as one journeyman to another do you see the improvements that could be made ? But i think it is a fine machine. I am building a 48 x 48 all ball screws and track bearings i found a granit insp.table im using as a base. again love the videos

Les, considering what this machine is designed for, it is excellent. . It isnt a Haas by any means but my cuts are accurate to about 0.005". For wood and most soft metal designs, that is usually plenty. You can always make a bigger better machine but that always comes at a cost.

Hi Garrett. Great review. I have one of the first Shark CNC by NextWave and am considering upgrading. The Longmill and gsender offers many features I do not have. Does the available software with the Longmill make it possible to carve curved (or warped) surfaces such as the back of a chair, like can be done with virtual zero unlimited in Nextwave's software?

Joseph, the Longmill doesn't have this multipoint z axis probing feature.

Garret. By the way. I use a USB game pad to move my CNC around on the xyz axis. So I don't have to be next to the computer. Mine is wired, but you could use wireless game pad. I make keyboards short cuts on the the UGS program, and then use a program call keyjoy that converts my joystick button to key strokes. The joy stick cost me $10 for 2 nintendo NES joystick. It's great. So right from the game pad I can also zero the axis, and return home, and even pause. Message me if you want more info

Nice review, not an expensive machine. To me I see some downsides that don't make it a upgrade for my 6040 Chinese cnc which I did upgrade the controller for because they sold it with an illegal copy of someone. Like mentioned before, the Y rails should be facing the other way imo to not catch all the chips. You mentioned support is very important, in the end I noticed that you didn't use it, Why is it so important and then not use it? I know, you could and they would have sent you the replacement parts. Last, it's strong and can hold a big guy on top. Though using 3d printed parts? I'd like to see the accuracy test once you have the limit switches installed because it does look like a nice machine. Meaning, home go to G0X29Y29 make a mark, home and repeat a few times.

Hi Jasper. There are always areas for improvement. I didn't use the support because I didn't need it. I could solve the issue myself. We can always find things wrong and I made not of the weaknesses. As I said, I already did accuracy. I did not do repeatability so will do that. Thanks and happy CNC'ing.

Excellent video. My only concern are the "v" wheels. You said it yourself that you tightened them too much and the surface adapted to the increase in holding force by pealing off........ That by itself bothers me. If you over tightened them and they adjusted, then might that same concept apply over time as the wheels move back and forth that this "adjustment" might also occur??? Your thoughts.....

Hi David. The V-wheels are the wear item on the machine. However, once they 'nested', they gave been doing very well and there has not been a need to replace them yet.

Curious on why you use UGS instead of G Sender while doing the demo ? It also looked like you used a different dust boot compared to the one you demonstrated in the video. Is there a reason for this?

Good eye. The dust collector I was using is when I built to deflect the downblast from the router, while at the same time, I can film the cuts. Regarding universal G-Code sender, I have been in the process of transitioning. The only reason it was in some of the videos is because my computer is so old, it's having an issue.

Hi Garrett, another awesome video! The Longmill is my next machine! I'm using a Shapeoko XXL right now. Still stuck with UGS at the moment. I downloaded gSender and installed it but I get a "No devices found" when I try to connect. I was able to connect to a Genmitsu 3018 with no issues. i've even played with the com port assignments but maybe i'm not doing something right. After playing with it on the 3018 I want it to work on the Shapeoko! Do you have any suggestions or know where I could go for more info? Thanks for all you share, I've been learning in leaps and bounds by watching your videos! Randy Eastman, GA

I always recommend going with the machine that feels like the right fit for you and your needs. At the end of the day, what matters most is being able to create the projects you've been imagining!

@@IDCWoodcraft Happy to do it. I also just realized I can start with the 30 x 30 mk2 and upgrade it to the 48 x 30 if I need to later. That, and the cost difference is making me lean this way. Really appreciate the information. It has helped me save a lot of money and make what is a better decision for my situation.

Just watched and stopped over to Sienci Labs to check them out. Looks like they have gone away from right angle sides, cut down on the heftiness metal gantry ends, and did the same to the z axis. You had me sold on getting the LongMill until I saw its cheaper made brother. I made the mistake of getting a bobs cnc and will not tolerate a flimsy machine. I was looking into the Onefinity Elite, but the wait time is 16-18 weeks. What's your thoughts on LongMills new build, I can't see it being as sturdy as yours?

Hi Garret. I've put together my MK2, and everything is great. By the router makes a grinding sound when moving along y axis on rapid mode. I've tried adjusting the eccentric nuts but it didn't help. Is that aouns normal?

At first it is because you are breaking in the anti-backlash nut. Also put a little light oil on the threads

What is the maximum depth one can cut? I need to cut cavities 6" deep. Comment on a long bit length and whether the length does compromise accuracy. Thanks

johnligetfalvy9265, you can typically cut pockets up to 2" deep brother. Beyond that you are going to have a tough time finding the right bit for the job. The length of the bit does compromise accuracy.

Funnily enough, i'm a retired woodworker too... Me and my grand daughter were messing around in the shop today, with cnc software! Also i tried to dload the software for the long mill today... but for some reason i must jhave messed up ... i couldn't get it to work! dload didn't seem to work either! I own a shapeoko XXL, and this thing doesn't compare to that one. This is a sub 2000 dollar cnc, the shapeoko uses all metal everything, touchless homing sensors and a balls crew z. In my opinion this system for 1200 bucks is good, but curb your expectations, this cnc is full out a budget level cnc.

Its just a ultralight Entry level Kit .. that only hold a tiny 1Hp trimmer router. Its also based on off the shelf aluminum Angle extrusion .. that inherently isn't very straight . Aluminum Box is very straight, but Angle tends to have a bend . But for the cheap price its not that bad a toy to start with. You can't cut much with a 1Hp router so you will want to build a heavier from that can hold a 2 1/4 or bigger router that can take a 1/2" tool

Hi, Green. Thanks for commenting. You are right...it is not an industrial machine. I would say, at least there is a group of CNC routers that home hobbyists can afford that work well, and gives them the ability to make some very cool projects.
