The site at Longtown was originally in use 2000 years ago when a Roman fort was built here to house the Roman infantry who were sent to Britain to fight the Silures tribe in South Wales. When Griffith ap Llewellyn joined forces with Aeflgar, Earl of East Anglia, and sacked the Anglo-Saxon town of Hereford, Harold Godwinson was sent in to force the army back into Wales. Harold and his army set up camp in the old Roman fort at Longtown and both deepened the ditches and raised the height of the ramparts, which is why the ramparts have the height of a Saxon burh. When the Normans invaded England, the old Roman fort with Saxon ramparts was the perfect site to built a motte and bailey.
