Portland may have a reputation for the scale and visibility homelessness, but smaller communities are struggling with the issue as well. Longview police are working overtime to increase patrols around a homeless camp where roughly 150 people live on the corner of Alabama Street and Oregon Way.

No you can't, so clean Porta potty should be placed and maintained by the city it's a health issue. Clean water needs to be supplied to the camps. This is an economic failure of neoliberalism not a moral one. Not everyone it above average and we shipped their jobs out and this is the result.

"Homeless" is very inaccurate term. Open drug use area is what this is. Has nothing to do with homeless. Given a home drug addicts will still spend almost all their time together near their drug supply and will take the drugs on the spot. They have little to no use for a home. Make drugs freely available and you will curb most drug issues. The stupidity of trying to force addicts to live in homes and kick has been tried for decades. We can't even slow down addiction. We could spend 1/10th the money and provide addicts with what they want...drugs. Give them some food too, they don't care how crappy the food is, just keep those drugs coming. They've taken the Blue Pill and don't want to stop. Accept reality. Create free drug centers away from others. Addicts don't care where they get high.

Nobody held a gun to their heads and made do drugs. My favorite cousin Butch, got into hard drugs. Aids finally got him in prison. He told me " dont do as I do, do as I tell you. You go to prison and you will get your ass kicked in the morning and again at night, I got people everywhere and don't care what it costs me". I loved him so much I did as he said. He said he had excuses for using drugs, but they were bullshit in the long run. (He had dyslexia when they thought that you were stupid. He did a drawing how he saw things compared to what I saw. He couldn't read, but he was a great Harley mechanic. He would work 6 mos then go on unemployment 6 mos and just party. And wind up getting busted. But when not in jail or partying he worked. And when his kids started to get older he told his son the same thing as me. He didn't listen and is doing life without possibility of parole. No more excuses,

In the Netherlands drugs are not illegal but being homeless is. You can do drugs if you can stay off the streets and many do; they are functional addicts that work but if you end up on the street you go away, not to a jail but to a long term facility. You are forced there and start out in an open bay, treatment ect. If you want better than you must prove yourself clean ect. Than you get a room with a room mate if you are clean and working and so it goes. If you mess up than you start over. You can be there for years if that is what you need and you know what; they are not on the streets. If you end up on the streets again than back you go. Most of these people can never be on thier own anymore and need constant care. We have had several homeless addicts been given vouchers to live in this complex, a family place with hard working people and children. These addicts bring drugs, filth, prostitution and violence. We got infested with bugs because of them. They hang out all night and make noise and the children have to walk past them to go to school while they are high, stinky and inappropriate. Than they eventually get kicked out but it takes awhile and more cone back. One even shot a gun and broke a main water pipe and flooded other apartments and those people had to move, not him because his apartment did not flood. Someone could have been killed. It took a year to get rid of him. Thankfully the complex stopped accepting vouchers and we have returned to a nice quiet family place. These people will never return to being a functional person in society. Keep them off the streets by making homelessness illegal and providing long term care facilities and for god sakes close the damn border; that's where it is all coming from!

Willing to work? The best way to prove it, is start with your home. Where ever you lay your head and dump your waste, is your home. If your not willing to take control and keep things clean, safe and maintained in and around your own community, and not even for the sake of yourself or anyone else; Then why should you expect conscientious citizens to accept your standards and provide opportunities? You have to prove your ethical worth by pulling your weight in any way you can to keep things clean, safe and healthy. Starting with yourself. Our self value is not defined by other people and their commercial/political mentality and social judgments. Our self worth is determined by how we personally chose to step up to the challenge, and what the results look like at the end of our efforts. Don't tell people you're different, SHOW people you are different.

Well we killed over 40 million Indians in order to steal their land and resources so the European outcasts that were of no use to their countries, were put on ships and sent overseas and killed their way to the west coast to alleviate the over crowding. So who are we going to kill next to alleviate the overcrowding. Never mind. Biden already branded anyone who didn't vote for him as a threat to this nation. So I guess you Democrats are going to have to try to kill all of us who don't support your traitor government. This. When I was homeless and stayed in encampments EVERYONE gave me the same advice: keep going, and get the fuck out as fast and as sober as you can. It’s heartbreaking having to give a woman Narcan and to have them tell you “please with everything in you dont do what I do” we are human just as much as someone who can rent or work. Treating the homeless like they are invisible is the first disconnect I see. When no one cares for you there isnt much effort to even think that you are worth a dime in a city full of money

@Just Real Truth, People are personally responsible for the decisions they make and the consequences they have. If you choose to shove a needle in your arm and become a junkie or can’t put down the bottle and drink yourself into the gutter then you should suffer the consequences of your actions. That’s nobody’s fault but your own. Society didn’t fail you. The vast majority of people are out there everyday doing what they have to do and taking care of themselves, not being burdens on society or playing “poor me”. You can’t fault decent people for not wanting this shit around them. Store owners and the public shouldn’t have to deal with the crime, feces, and needles and trash, being harassed for money, solicitation, etc. billions are spent on homeless outreach programs yearly. Bottom line is you can’t help people who won’t help themselves. It isn’t our responsibility to subsidize peoples bad decisions and handouts only draw more to the area. The ones who are mentally I’ll need to be committed to institutions and off the streets.

Yes…… if you commit felonies it impacts your life later.! That’s not anything new. However people who tried to make the right decision should not have to pay for those that at the same time made different decisions. Yes there are consequences for the decisions we make either now or later in life but consequences will come. Right now we’re making the people who did the right thing pay for those that continue to do the wrong! I also want to leave the city now because I’m over the homeless Garbage crime and overall grossness that has become Portland! I don’t understand how it helps the homeless to allow them to actually rob from everyone around them now with no consequences! How is their mental health better? Because the rest of our mental health is much worse… Yes the mental health of the people paying the taxes that are now leaving the state in droves might not matter to our leaders now but wait until they are gone. That’s Portland’s answer… Let’s punish the taxpayers that are making correct choices. Let’s make them pay for other people’s choices and let’s destroy their neighborhoods in the meantime. Great plan Portland and Longview. I’m voting out anyone that doesn’t support getting the homeless situation of crime and theft of our neighborhoods under control. They are like this because of the choices they made and continue to make. Being a felon is not a barrier to employment. Most of the day labor construction workers are felons. They just don't want to put in the effort and time to better themselves. Most in this particular camp are daily drug users (I live 4 blocks away from it and see and smell this shithole daily). There are many options for them, many programs they could utilize, but those require them to be clean and they can't do it. They would rather live in their own filth. There's my two cents.

ANY local, state, or federal government that allows these types of encampments to exist is a government that no longer works for the people who fund it. Doesn't matter if it's a small town or a major city, these moveable slums should never have the opportunity to take hold, because once they do it is much harder to get rid of them. Before you get all virtuous on me, Imagine this monstrosity next to your home. Sad, because for the people in this camp, this is probably as good as it's going to get. Unless they can get and hold jobs, they're not going anywhere. Increased police patrols may keep their unpleasant behaviors confined to the campground more, rather than out in the surrounding areas, but there's no real reason for them to change. I believe those guys who live in the camp who said it's hard to get a job when you're a felon. It would be instructive to hear what their attempts were to get a job, what kinds of jobs they actually applied for and were denied, what sorts of jobs felons can get. It would also be instructive to hear from a social worker or jobs specialist who works with this population and see if they agree or not. I'm a little surprised just to see port-a-potties. I would have thought the city could build a building with bathrooms that included sinks and showers. Then some people could get jobs taking care of them. But you'd need a campground manager too and a few rules so that those facilities didn't immediately get trashed.

A wise man once said, "An excuse is just a reason stuffed with a lie." These people have dozens of "excuses" for why they're homeless after all this time. Everyone in Portland (EVERYONE) needs to stop the mentality that these people are victims. Understand, these people may not have had a choice in becoming homeless (although a lot of them did).. but they DID (and DO) have a choice in STAYING homeless. EVERY DAY that you don't get up and work like hell to get out of homelessness, is another day that you've decided it's what you want, and are 100% willing to accept as your life. If you're homeless: 1. You shouldn't have a pet. You can't even guarantee that you'll be fed every day. Why would you subject an animal to that? 2. You shouldn't own more than you can carry at a full run. Until you have a place to live (a tent doesn't count) you don't need more than clothes and hygiene. 3. A felony doesn't keep you from getting: Food Stamps, Section 8 housing, a job. 4. Not having a driver's license in a town with as much public transit as Portland is not a barrier to housing or employment. I have an apartment, and a job, and I haven't had a driver's license in twenty years. If you choose to live this way, then do it somewhere else.

Nah Mate........it's drugs and alcohol, you can skip paying bills (even do bankruptcy) and always pay RENT! And you can work, literally millions of jobs and nobody applying. You can make good choices, live within your means and pay rent/work even in expensive cities. How come all the muslims I know that have immigrated here, don't do any drugs or drink and work 1-2 jobs all have nice apartments and live simply within their means? How come all the earthly vegan hippies I know always have a place to live, because they lie simply and within their means and don't do drugs. How come 99% of non drinking - non drug using humans never end up homeless?????? It's the scatter brained drug addicts, with face tattoos, missing teeth, open sores and a felonious history that are living in these homeless camps....ironically crying that they can't get a job etc etc because of the shit choices they constantly make. NOBODY WANTS TO HIRE A TWEAKER - THEY STEAL EVERYTHING AND ARE UNRELIABLE PILES OF TRASH. A lot of these folks are also "on-the-run" covid release folks from other states that don't want to go back and face imprisonment, along with violent felons and pedophiles release back on the street due to full jails. It's a disaster out there, there is help and shelters all over, BUT THERE ARE RULES........that drug addicted felonious METH MONKEYS hate. These sub-humans belong in asylums..............or we need a Prison Factory City that's walled off completely where these things go to either Meth themselves up some more, or get their shit together and prove themselves worthy of the real world again. These are mentally ill drug addicts, many of them criminal felons, and city governments think it's okay to let them camp near elementary schools and parks where children play. These homeless drug addicts are the ones stealing our catalytic converters and cars and making everyone feel unsafe in their own neighborhoods. City government officials across the country should be criminally prosecuted for failing their duties as government officials and they should be punished by serving mandatory community service to clean up the needles and trash themselves. We must make street camping strictly illegal - either go into a homeless shelter or go to prison.

@@sidehustletips I was homeless without any ID in Phoenix about 18 years ago. Replacing my AZ driver's licence was fairly easy, as the MVD office was able to pull up my picture and I was able to answer personal questions and pay the somewhat nominal fee. But the MVD doesn't accept an address of "none," so I had to lie and gave them the address of the house I'd lost in Tucson that was on the card I'd lost. I expect I broke a law doing that. Replacing my birth certificate was very difficult, and were it not for help from St. Vincent de Paul's homeless outreach services I'd have never been able to get it. I was born in California, and had to mail several things to Sacramento and get things back from them in the mail. People who haven't been homeless don't realize just how difficult it can be to replace ID or just simply to receive mail when you're homeless. And keeping these things are difficult as people will steal everything you have while you're asleep.

I agree what you're describing are not campgrounds. Ideally cities should be able to find some plots of land somewhere in or near the city that could be fenced and developed so the homeless have some place to live and yet not be so visible and intrusive as what you describe. Building apartments or houses for the homeless or converting apartment buildings or hotels has proven again and again to be unworkable or prohibitively expensive or both. I think finding them a place to camp is the best alternative.

The problem is the law that allows those that can’t make the choice to fight for survival through help are letting the illness and drugs control their choices, the law as it stands is their freedom of choice, it’s really Freedom to fail, which I believe is cruel for the person, their loved ones especially the children of addicts, and society in General. He got very angry and said I don't need a job!! Ok then. As for felons, it is hard to find a job that will hire them. Even the company I worked for was against it, to which I said I'm not and I was a Prison Correctional Officer. Changed their mind at Corporate.

Don't worry the Ruling elite have big plans for America. Lets just say the herd will be extremely thinned in the near future. So all the one's left standing can breathe a sigh of relief and enjoy that elbow room for a moment before the over breeders and mass immigrants create the same old play. America is the front line of the next major battle and most of the dumbed down sheep can't see it coming. There is a time for war, peace, hate, love. to heal, cry and die. So hold on to your loved ones cause we are in for a hell of a ride. The government is fully locked and loaded. the coffins are in position and the train loads of shackles are close and the POW camps are ready for business. You people have no clue how much suffering lies ahead. We lived by the sword. Soon we will die by the sword.

It is a DemocRAT run city, just like Seattle Washington, Chicago, Baltimore, Detroit, San Francisco etc. What else can you expect? Brain dead liberals enjoy living like this- it’s like a citywide Woodstock.

Anyone can become homeless. Local governments need to take responsibility and provide services in designated areas for showers, food, donations, and other help designed to lift our fellow brothers out of the mess that they have found themselves in. This is what happens when we ignore those in need... Let's show love for one another. Cities should provide a budget that addresses all the needs of the hungry to get back on their feet and begin paying taxes again... Its a win/win. ❤

Kill the goose that laid the GOLDEN egg ? Just asking, how many departments, staffed with people, desks, a building and a budget are there ? 1 for housing them ? 1 for food or feeding them ? 1 for the drug use ? 1 for cleaning the streets ? On and on. I'm always hearing they need more money to help to fix the problem and the problem is still there. Think of all the agencies and people out of work across the Country if the problem was fixed. I read $35,000.00 per person is spent on helping the homeless, at least buy them a new clean tent.
