The practice of mindfulness and wisdom is about developing the ULTIMATE perspective, or CONTEXT, of your existence. Instead of conceiving and conceptualizing thoughts and behaviors, look into discerning the ROOT of them instead --- put them in the fundamental context of DESIRE, AVERSION, and DELUSION or the absence of those.

Do you think that you understand this monk? I really don't know what to make of what he says. Maybe what he says is helpful, maybe not. Maybe it is good outside sitting meditation. I'd say wisdom arises as a natural outcome of proper practice. It is not a set of conclusions done by the brain. It arises from beyond as a right view involving harmony, balance, cause+effect. I would say all mental fabrications are bad in sitting meditation and ought to be stopped via release. Maybe this is something beyond my knowledge. He says mind is the forerunner of all things, but I'd say right view is the forerunner in all things. The Buddha taught his path of virtue (sīla), concentration (samādhi), and wisdom (paññā). The power of intent (concentration) and purity (virtue) needed for paññā/wisdom comes from samādhi/concentration and sīla/virtue. So important are these two pillars that they comprise the whole teaching: Dhammapada (verse 183): Abandoning what is evil, developing what is good, purifying the mind - that is the teaching of the Buddhas. I guess what the monk says depends if you think mental noise needs to be worked on as a psychological problem that needs to be addressed, or as a flaw that needs disposal. I certainly favor the latter. The former may be endless and without resolution.

I listened to this talk quite a while ago and now it means so much more in consideration of the Venerables’ talks about “right order” - which I’ve only come to recently understand. I really think you are the only Ajahns teaching the Dhamma with such clarity. Just brilliant. Thank you.

Hearing the Dhamma expressed so clearly sometimes (due to the context i'm presently assuming) causes the effect of me lamenting the decades spent floundering in the suttas trying to clearly comprehend them. The Bhaddekaratta Sutta is very helpful here in correcting this context. The way I employ it is from a quote by Dag Hammarskjöld, paraphrased, "To the past, thank you and goodbye."

This is excellent Bhante. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼. It is not difficult to understand, yet the language used made it more difficult for me. I am a native English speaker ( university educated) and love the language you use …similar to one of my Burmese teachers, but it isn’t ‘ everyday English language’ and so I have to stop and think ‘what does he mean?’ I guess it’s the same in the translation of the Suttas. A lot of language is used which is not in common usage. I wonder if this in itself might put some people off ? It certainly is not a criticism of your wonderful explanations. My teacher in Burma has been referred to as a ‘walking dictionary’ …even though he is not a native English speaker, his vocabulary far far extends mine and is also quite old fashioned. I think you are also like this! Actually it is in itself beautiful to listen to but does require me to have to stop and think and ‘translate’ into more everyday language!

Thank you Ajahn for this teaching, I’ve started using this for my practice of patient endurance and developing the middle way. When there is an attitude of sensual indulgence I develop the theme of non sensual indulgence (or the danger of sensuality) if there is a attitude of craving for pain I develop the theme of non craving for pain. Is this correct way to practice with the context?

12:00 "Once you start practicing mindfulness correctly you will have confidence to know that I don't need to police my behaviour as long as I police my mind." Mind precedes thoughts, mind is their chief, their quality is made by mind, if with a base mind one speaks or acts, through that suffering follows him like a wheel follows the ox’s foot. Mind precedes thoughts, mind is their chief, their quality is made by mind, if with pure mind one speaks or acts, through that happiness follows him like a shadow which does not depart. Dhammapada verses 1 and 2
