Nathan, I truly believe most of your 175K subscribers love every thing you show us about your farm and sawmill operation, we are not here just to watch the LT70 go back and forth, as spectacular as that is, and we do love it when you throw water on a log of rare beauty, regardless of the species. But mostly, we tune in to see what is new at the Out of the Woods channel, and, for me at least, it is never disappointing. Also, I ordered a couple pairs of suspenders from Killinger for me and my son, I know we will love them. Best wishes to you and your family.

Nathan, I know you get a lot of unsolicited advice. Let me add to it. LOL. With that poplar, you may want to reach out to the historic restoration community. Up until about WWII, the preferred wood for windows was poplar. It's straight grained, takes shapes easily with both power and hand tools, and it paints up magnificently. MTSU has a highly respected Historic Restoration program and they are always looking for suppliers who can feed raw materials to their craftspeople. There may be other programs nearer to you in East Tennessee. And, as always, a million thanks for what you do and for sharing it with us.

Nathan, you’ve taught this city girl some things about how lumber is harvested and how to pick planks for woodworking projects (avoid the pith). When the logs slid off the truck, I found myself saying to myself “nice big log with central void but can yield some nice planks, low grade pine because I see where the multiple limbs were cut off.” Thank you for teaching me!

Nathan - some of my favorites is the sawing of the juniper / Eastern Red Cedar. I've always loved the smell as a kid and wish I could just come by and shovel up the sawdust for you. I was thinking I could bag it in smaller cloth bags for sachet projects in vehicles, homes or lesser used cabins and such. Just keep doing what you are doing in Eastern Tennessee.

Instead of trusses, I think I'd just go with box beams. 12' feet isn't that much of a spam, and box beams would be easier, cheaper, faster, and give more usable interior space.

Nathan, try using the foam gun that Mike from "Outdoors with the Morgans" uses on all his equipment. Works like a charm - spray it on then wash it off with your Stihl pressure washer, followed by his Stihl blower !! End result is marvelous !! No streaks or wet spots !! No drying required !!

Simpson Strong Ties are the way to go. It will add Strength and Years of life to any structure... not to mention Peace of Mind when to next big wind storm comes along. Money well spent. Love watching your endeavors to run a small farm and mill.

Have you heard of Huon Pine? Some of these trees where I live in Tasmania (Australia) are over 2,000 years old. Hard to believe but it's true. Because it grows so slowly the wood is prized. Was used in boat building as it has a very high oil concentration but not so much now as it's becoming rare.

King William [Billy] Pine was also highly prized by the early convict timber cutters. Resists rot and is easily worked by either hand or electric tools. Another marvellous boat building timber. Most has been cut out and the Tasmanian Forestry Commission severely regulates what remains.

@peterkemp1973 Yes, agreed. Another incredible wood. Boat builders loved King Billy Pine. Easy to work with. There were a lot of old houses with King Billy and Huon floors and panelling. Worth a mint now.

Awesome Friday morning early video release with coffee, Thanks for taking us along. Nice log load saved from the dump 4 sure. Glad to hear Cedar was the choice. Truss Fab we made a jig on our gooseneck deck to help speed up multiple layout and not having to bend over so much for us older guys 🤠🇺🇸

Use rafters & collar ties instead of trusses. You'll get more headroom that way.

My advise with trusses is build the first one and use it as a template the first one you build is the last one you put up 🤙

Like you, I do a lot of weed spraying on my property. If, you want to give your weed killer some extra kick, add some DEF Fluid to it. It is basically Nitrogen and it tricks the weeds into thinking it is good stuff? Speeds up the absorption process and makes the weeds die faster.

Yes I did. Drew them up on graft paper then layer them out on garage floor drawing them out with chalk. Layer the 2x4's into place and glued and nailed. Building been up for about 40 years so I guess it worked.

I built trusses once for a small garage. Lap joints at the apex secured with one 1/2 inch nut & bolt through the glued joint and off you go. It's probably overkill but there was never a problem with them. You can also use metal reinforcement plates made by Simpson Manufacturing under the brand name Simpson Strong-Tie.

yeah i got to get a bat and carb for my Kaw 4x4....and 2 new front tires,,new ones on the back... work just keeps coming Nathan,,,,,i just got the grass cut again,,its rained every week....so far...i have not put tomatos in yet....im behind...but the Sun is warm... thats what i love about summer,,you have to get things done,,it dont last long...have a good one,,love watching a guy work,,haa

I have an old government handbook from the 30s? That covers all kinds of construction techniques. That’s how I learned to make custom stairs amongst other things.

Nathan, you should consider getting a foam Cannon like the one Mike Morgan uses. It would make it much easier for you to wash your equipment and keep it shiny and new looking. It would also probably save you some time which is at a premium it seems. Bill H from Cranberry Township PA

I can relate to not enough time in the day, I have made trusses, it was a looooong time ago , my memory was the 2nd thing to go and I don't remember the 1st ,lol I might would gone with green or red roofing on the fuel hut , black may get really hot down here in the south, thanks for everything. Side note Not to criticize. In most shops it is frowned upon to take a 4 wheeler, motorcycle or Woodmizer LOL etc. in for service if you have not washed it first. Just a note to get better attention to service from your mechanic. I enjoy the video's, wearing my OotW tee shirt.👍

Best weedkiller in my yard is Vinegar essence (Ättika in Sweden). Harmless to nature but plants hate it and wilters. Would never touch any other weeding material. Oh and salt! Salt is good on our driveway etc. Melts into the paving cracks and kills off the weeds inbetween. Always fun to see the new logs arrive and what comes out of it. :-D

Ya I did and when the inspector came over for the final he asked who built the trusses. When I told him I did he asked to see my engineering degree. O o He said they were good and told me to take out the gussets . I said ok. He gave me the final and those gussets are still in the trusses.

I have a tulip poplar _exactly_ like that in my back yard, outside the window of my home office, as I am typing,, except that it is still standing! ..... It isn't as big (at least not yet - it's 18"-20" diameter a couple of feet above ground), but 20 years ago when we moved here, there had been damage to the trunk, that had led to rot and to ants living in the hollow center, so if I ever cut it down I know it will be hollow in the center. The tree leans slightly away from my home, so I am not concerned about it falling - there is nothing beneath it to come to any harm.

What pressure do you wash your vehicles at on the pressure washer most times? And although it may not work well in certain areas, have you tried the 'propane torch' weed killing method? Not sure how well that would work where you are doing it.

Hi Nathan. I just came across your video and this is the first one I’ve seen. I look forward to seeing more. There was one scene you did not explain that maybe you can help me understand. It looks like you were filling a big jug with windshield washer fluid and setting it on the sawmill, but I did not see what the purpose was. What was the use of the large jug of washer fluid?

I watch alot of sawyer videos. The guys keep the track the mill slides back and forth on nice and soapy. You can see it down on the left. You like Nathan try Matt Cremona. Good milling channels. 👍

The solution drips on the blade to keep sap from building up and creating friction.
