We are uncovering two beautiful oak trees on our 5 acre property that have been overran by underbrush and vines, hoping to give them a healthier life and a place for us to enjoy! Clearing this land is one of our favorite things to do so all the amazing nature can thrive!

What I did in my yard was to find a BIG old tent on Craigslist for cheap, and set thart up in my back yard for the summer. I moved a bed and an extension cord to power whatever, and now on hot days and nights I have a cool, shaded retreat I can move into. Better than that overheated house collecting all that solar radiation. Comes the fall, everything gets folded up and taken inside.

I would suggest make it a fire pit area. Put up a couple posts/shade structure possibly that you could hang hammocks from, or a swinging bench or chair. Build a brick fire pit. The trees are tall enough that as long as you aren't having bonfires,they won't be a problem. Also, realize ferns generally want shade, so you might lose a lot of them now that it's all cleared out.
@Woodbrew
@Woodbrew 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks David I never really thought about the ferns and shade🤞🏼 This area definitely needs a small fire pit area. We haven’t done any masonry work so this could be a great opportunity to try our hand at that!

Love that big red toy! Those vines and privet look like the honeysuckle bushes and grape vine that I had to deal with when we bought our lot to put a house on... a nightmare with just a chainsaw and a S10 pickup to get rid of it all . Keep the Hammock, a small gazebo type cover with comfy benches for lounging while reading, listening to Pink Floyd, relaxing and blowing off a day. Hope the ferns last, they are neat. Hostas would be good for a hard shade area too. Just a few ideas. Maybe section off an area close to the workshop, off to the side, for lumber storage too, if it doesn't interfere with the aesthetics of the extension of the yard. As for the vines still in the trees, rope or chain, and play tug of war with the tractor, they will irritate you hanging from the branches when everything else is done.

A couple of comments: First, the "Fence Post" you found MAY NOT be a "Fence" post at all. It could be a survivor's marking post. HMMMM! What ta do? Second, What to do about the "Fern Gully"??? My suggestion could be a WOODBREW multi-part project. Within the branches of the two "Mighty Oaks" build matching tree houses. With a "stiff" adjoining bridge. Not a swing bridge. On the underside of the bridge install a new roll up/down Outdoor Movie Screen. For family Walk-in Lawnchair Movie Night. Design the outer sides of the tree house for future additional builds, for a future child's vertical play spaces. Lastly, in the shop, build a moveable Outdoor Beverage Center. That you can store in the covered walk through, park near the back patio, or truck on out to the movie space. Lotta Love to you two, Jim in N.Y.

I have an approximately 300 year old live oak on my property that I had to 'excavate' from vines and undergrowth surrounding it when we bought the property. The tree was sad looking, but has perked up since. I regularly have to de-vine it, but I reckon I maybe bought the tree another 50 years. I didn't have a tractor to do the work, so it wasn't nearly as much fun as that looked. I'm sure your trees will appreciate your efforts and reward you with many years of shade. As for what do use it for, I think you're on the right track with a She-Shed, etc for the area. Can easily be converted to a playhouse for kids, if and when you decide the go down that path.

Land management is so important....especially, for where your property is located (Alabama) - where everything grows fast and wild. The transformation you have made in just a few months is amazing. Just goes to show what hard work and determination can accomplish. The ferns ARE beautiful, Molly! Great job! BRAVO!!!!! 👍😎💕 P.S. Please look into PPE and clotohing for heavy vegetation removal. AND, wearing a mosquito coil might be a good option, too. Love you two....be careful. Suggestion for space: might want to review TA Outdoors Pallet Cabin build series. 😀👍

@@Woodbrew I've never built one and only seen one from a distance. They don't look super difficult, especially for one that will be just a small "cabin" type of thing. If it were me, I'd probably start with a deck type structure maybe 18" - 24" off the ground then set up the roof pitch and frame the end walls underneath. Obviously take care to size everything so it is able to support the roof. I feel like something around 12 x 12 would be a nice size if you did a steep roof pitch.

Hey Nick thanks for watching! That is incredible! Congratulations:) I would highly recommend a Kubota after you close on the property. The tractor, trailer, all the implements, and full coverage insurance (for life of the loan) was 33k. We put zero down and got 84 months 0%. It works out to be $400/month. I'm not going to act like that's nothing, but if you get serious about getting one, we have been very happy with ours. After receiving many quotes for varying tasks like spreading the gravel driveway, cleaning up the property, maintaining the property, etc it became very clear owning a tractor was the way to go. The quotes for clearing the property was in the 15k-25k range....
