It's been 4 years since I ditched the dye and let my natural silver hair grow in. Since then I've had lots of conversations about aging and I've spent time looking at selfies to see myself as I am now. This photo diary has been a powerful tool for me to choose the makeup, style and attitude I bring with me every day.
I hope this resonates with you. Be well!
xoxo Beth

I let my gray hair grown out in 2020. I never saw anyone in my family go gray. So, I wasn’t looking for it. I had brown hair but dyed it blonde. I started seeing that my roots were coming in white, and stopped coloring it to see what would happen. 4 years later I have white hair around my face and on top and medium gray with white streaks on the length. It’s the cool look I always went for when I was coloring it, so I felt extremely lucky that it’s growing out that color. I’ve been described as blonde by men. But, on the other hand I’ve gotten comments from my sister and a girlfriend like “oh, you’re not coloring your hair anymore, I personally am not ready to give up.” As if they were saying I’m letting myself go. I don’t care, because I like it. I’ve seen photos and videos of myself and I think I look in my early 50s, when I’m actually 62. I think it’s because my hair is in the best condition it’s ever been from not coloring it. My husband loves it too. I retired this year, and I exercise about 6 hours a week. I haven’t been in this good shape since my 30s. So that certainly doesn’t hurt. I loved the end part of your video. I feel extremely lucky to be healthy and alive, and lucky to have my 71 year old husband healthy and alive. My looks probably will always be important to me, but they are not all of me.

I also need to lean towards darker colours in clothing since transitioning to grey hair. My hair is quite silver and those mid tones I enjoyed once no longer work now. Brows are definitely more important than they were in my makeup routine as is cheek and lip products. It’s interesting how what we see in others is merely a reflection of ourselves. I often forget that. I think one reason for deciding to adopt my natural silver colour was to embrace being a “youthful older” person as opposed to an “old looking young” person. While I support women who choose to dye their hair and have cosmetic surgery to pursue a youthful appearance, I’m not sure they wind up looking younger most of the time. Thanks for the video.

I love natural silver on you so pretty. I have silver streaks and love the contrast myself. I am 58 yrs. Old. But I have cousins that went solid grey in their twenties. You look young for your age. Pretty complexion. And your hair is a pretty contrast

This is the best video I’ve seen about transitioning to grey. I keep trying and then end up coloring. My fear is I have thin hair and I’m afraid it will look even thinner grey. But….you don’t know until you try

I have fine thin hair. I transitioned in 2018-2019. My hair strands are thicker plus has a nice shine as well. As to grow out period, the hardest is the first 6 months. After about 9 months you become impatient to have it grow out altogether. I had gone from dark brunette to blond about 8 years prior. I had the same issue where the stylists would go warm first and then moved to the cooler ash/wheat color. The stylists worked to blend the white areas so by the time I started the transition the sides and front worked pretty well. Overall it took about 15-18 months. Use headbands, ponytails, hats, and scarves help with initial transition.

I’m 43 and I think I get comments on both ends as well. Had a young guy card me and said “oh you’re 80’s, I thought you were at least 90’s”. I smiled and said thanks. Mostly thought it was funny that his generation is calling us out by decade now 😂 as I got in my car I chuckled cause I’m 1980, not even “80’s”. I only have about 1/2 as much silver as you and do wished I had more but mine really does look more like highlights which probably lends itself to keeping people guessing lol. You always look fantastic ❤

I think there is so much to age perception beyond looks and hair colour. How one carries oneself, how mature someone is, how successful someone is in their career, so many things. I love what you said at the end and I agree completely. We almost lost my Dad last year (one year ago today actually I was sitting in the ER trauma room with my Mom (and Dad on a table, unconscious), trying to decide what he would want - we had some pretty tough decisions to make) and that experience really made me go from “ugh I’m getting older” to “let’s celebrate that we made it” - made it to another day, another week, another year, another birthday, aging up! Celebrate it all!! I’m so grateful I got to celebrate another Christmas with my Dad. And my Mom too!! It’s so nice to see how you’ve learned what colours really work for you and which ones don’t. I’m getting there. I’d also love to have a professional colour analysis. I think that would be so cool….maybe literally!!😅

Excellent video Beth 🎉 It will be 4 years for my transition on Feb 26th, best decision i’ve ever made. The only clothes I cannot wear is beige colours or nude/ brown lipsticks. I do wear a lot of bright lipsticks and do my makeup every day. I truly believe that anyone can look gorgeous with silver/grey/white hair, having confidence and not caring what other people think is really important 😃👩🏻‍🦳🤗 you look amazing as always 🥰

Wonderful video Beth. I hadn't been to your channel for a while as I'm not a great makeup wearer but I love the videos where you talk about your grey hair, attitudes within society and other aspects of your life. I too have silver/white hair and started to go grey when I was 15.! I coloured my hair for many years and always felt my hair colour was conflicting with my skin tone. I finally decided nature was the best colourist and let my hair go naturally silver. I have never looked back and can honestly say it was the best thing I ever did. I feel more authentic and confident but as we know it is a journey and I support women in all of their choices, it's a very personal decision. I particularly would love to see more about your choice of colours ( I have watched your previous video) and your personal style journey (kibbie). You have a wonderful way of intelligently articulating any subject you approach. Look forward to seeing more. Best wishes

I can so relate to your hair transition. Loved the comparison pics and your brutal honesty. I am 60 and started going grey in my early 30s (stress etc.). Stopped dying 8 years ago and feel prettier with silver hair but older sometimes when, like you, someone who is older assumes we are the same age. Complexion products can definitely age or bring life. You look stunning with silver hair and I just love the dark contrasting strands. You mentioned L'oreal detox shampoo in another video which I bought right away & have used it once a week since. Thank you for sharing your fantastic content!

Hello! Your channel showed up on my home page. I love it! Thank you for sharing your experiences with us🥰 I've never really been into my hair. I've shaved it off so many times. Then I started going gray in my early 40's. I LOVE my gray hair! I have extremely curly hair, so my gray doesn't quite flow yet, and came in clumps. First above my ears then through the front. The back of my hair is dark brown. I stopped using products that were bad for my hair because I was worried about the damage it was doing. I have it shaved on the sides and long on the top. This style works for me because we travel a lot and it's easier to take care of. Even with the gray people have a hard time guessing my age. Especially if I'm wearing a hat. I'm 54, but people usually think late 30's earily 40's. They say they would have guessed younger but my hair is gray🤔🤷🏽‍♀️ When my mom and I are both wearing hats people think she's my daughter because I'm taller than she is🤨🤷🏽‍♀️🤭 Drinking Water, eating right, exercising, and mind maintenance are a huge help in maintaining a healthy well being. Thanks again for your time🥰💕🤗

agreed, hair color is symbolic and our brains are trained to make shortcuts. I went silver in 2019, after dying my hair having gone grey young, just like you. I get so much positive feedback from women my age but it’s interesting what a THREAT not dying my hair any longer appears to be for many women younger than myself. yes, we are a mirror of their fears and presuppositions with silver hair. wow i really love your channel! thank you so much for your thoughtful presentations.

I hàve light warm.skin. my hair texture & amount changed from.thick wavy curly to thin & fine & straight! I look washed out You look beautiful Beth but I look so old! Not sure what to. do. That merry go round of every 2 wk dyeing( wld have to go brown Blond also washes me out) sounds terrible but I hate how I look & being seen & treated as a senior by others. Im at a loss

Going grey helped my scalp health more than anything else. It was beneficial for my hair to use temporary and transparent colours to smooth the hair cuticle. It worked to shift my, at the time, extremely short hair in warm or cool directions. I am naturally warmer toned but as I’ve aged, I am more neutral. Some days I am more olive and some days I am more cool toned and some days I am golden. I totally agree with you on tracking. One thing that I do is to put on a piece of clothing that I feel like wearing and build the makeup around it. I am neutral enough that I can shift and accommodate the palette my first piece of clothing presents. I think the best thing about grey is that it opened up more options for me. I am enjoying the experience and the experimentation. I do have to play with a lighter hand because everything is desaturated and because of texture. One thing I can’t be too timid or subtle about is my lip colour. The classic nude lip is disastrous. Lip liner is mandatory.

Yes yes yes!! I relate to everything you’ve said. My scalp was so raw and irritated, and we were using the gentlest dyes on the market. It’s just too much chemical treatment too often. It’s very interesting to hear that you have similar experiences with color-the neutrality and ability to shift between warm and cool colors.

What a great video. I'm quite lucky in that I have always preferred black and navy polo necks, both of which make my silver-streaked hair really stand out and make me feel chic and fabulous. I also agree about the lipstick. I wear black eyeliner on my top lids, dark nicely-shaped pencilled eyebrows and usually a cool-toned bright purpley/pink lipstick. The lipstick makes my blue eyes pop and contrasts nicely with my hair and dark tops. I've found you have to look a bit more polished with grey hair and that random patterns, messy hair and washed-out makeup can make you look older. Minimalist but strong darker colours and a pop of bright lipstick make you stand out. I haven't dyed my hair for over 3 years and I love that I look unique. I've never liked looking like every other woman (that middle-aged beige hair colour - gah) and my only wish is that it was even more silver! My mother has totally white hair that money can't buy and she looks incredible.

I can tell that Beth's seasonal palette is Winter. They are supposed to wear jewel tones (ruby red, emerald green, electric blue, hot pink, royal purple), bright white, black, gray. I'm a Summer (we are the dullest season) who looks best in pastels, yet I grew up wearing Autumn earth-toned clothes (and looked washed out in them) simply because I thought I was a drab Autumn. Three seasons can actually wear pastels: for Winters, "icy", cold-looking pastels; for Summers, "muted", dusty pastels; for Springs, "clear," bright, warm-looking pastels; for Autumns, NO pastels. There are many Color Me Beautiful books out there that showcase every season's clothing palette and even talk about hair and makeup colors. It doesn't have to be a guessing game.

So many good insights and tips. I have grown out my hair three times now. Each time I went back to the dye was after a bad experience with the mirror or camera. I let my gray grow out when I was 54 and it looked beautiful but I went back to dying it. I let it grow out again when I was 60 and it made me look 10 years older. The pigment in our skin changes as we age so keep that in mind. When I retire, I'm going to have my hairdresser take my hair to a level 10 (I know, OUCH!) and then dye it a warmer grey and deal with it from there. I don't have the patience to let it grow out any more. Your hair is gorgeous 🙂

It's beautiful on you. Not with your gorgeous skin, could anyone mistake you for someone older. I can remember when my daughter, who is 38 now, died her hair gray in her 20s. I don't think it aged her. Why are men allowed to go gray and look distinguished, and women are perceived as older. I'm 64, and just genetically don't have that much gray in my hair. I think if I had more gray, I would let it go gray. Looking at your precious photos, I 100% believe you look better now. Be well. I've missed you. Big hugs. ❤❤

A lot of younger women color their hair silver or Smokey grey. It took me a year and a half to grow out my hair. It was time and I am in my late sixties and colored my hair medium brown. On thing is I had to change my make up, eye glasses, and some clothing colors. I have grey blue eyes and neutral medium skin. I no longer feel good in browns and Khaki, which I used to wear. Good tips on make up and silver hair to avoid looking washed out.

It is totally okay that we have a contrast between the cool tones of our silver hair and the warmer tones of our makeup and clothing. I have pale olive undertones to my skin. I find if my foundation products lean cool or neutral, my skin looks especially unhealthy now that my hair is silver. I personally believe if you appear unhealthy at any age, you also appear a few years older than you actually are. So I lean into the ever-so-slightly warmer side of foundation, and then my healthy appearance lights up in a very nice contrast to my silver hair. I've also noticed when I'm wearing warmer toned clothing (dark brown instead of black, for example), my skin looks much more vibrant. I'm not sure why we automatically assume all people with gray hair need to switch to all cool tones. We don't tend to assume that with other hair color changes. 🦋🧡🦋

Great video. I am 60. I also had early grey with a white streak. When I was diagnosed with cancer at 50, I stopped dying my hair. I did not completely lose my hair with chemo but because it was so thin I cut it short. So that made it easy to grow out the grey. My hair also turned darker with chemo so it is very dark ash brown with grey in the front but it is not white, it it grey. I do think colors matter. Still trying to figure out my undertone. It is cool leaning neutral but I think I have a hint of olive. So I think the colors matter. Like you, I think high contrast makes me feel better so I wear a lot of bright colors. I also think I am a winter. So I totally relate to everything you say. I am content with the way I have aged. Still I have days I feel I look great…and some others..not so much. But generally it is about my body and not my face. I am also 60 so it does not really age me. And it does not matter to me anyway. Thank you for the candid conversation

My deepest respect and gratitude that you made it through your cancer journey. 💖💖💖 health concerns will change the way we look at everything. I have a very similar skin color, I think. It is probably because my parents had different coloring and I’m somewhere in the middle. Cool undertones, yellow overtones but also pretty light. Foundation matching has always been a challenge. Thanks for you lovely comment 💖💖💖

I have fairly short grey hair, which may make me look a bit older than longer grey hair like yours. Often long hair is associated with youth whether it's grey or any other color.

That’s a great point. My texture makes short hair more unmanageable than long, so I’ve always kept it at least at my shoulders n

You are absolutely right, gray is just a color, but that color "means" old in our society. It seems like a slow wheel, but I appreciate many women who are embracing their natural beauty. I feel so sorry for very young women who are already getting botox and filler; such a shame. I love my salt and pepper hair!

You do not look old, we as women tend to guess age better than men, we know about wrinkles, jaw line, etc. What ages a woman isn’t white hair, is attitude, dress style and hairstyle, also make up, in my opinion, You look awesome, your face looks very young and I absolutely love your hair!

My husband just told me something interesting. He heard a group of young people talking about an older lady standing in line at Starbucks. They basically said her dying her hair makes her look like an old lady with died hair! They actually thought she was in her early to mid 80's and very much in denial! We happen to know the older lady and she's 62 years old!😮

I was in our local grocery store, and cashiers in their mid 20's were asking me what skin care I use. I informed them what I use is for mature skin. They said they wanted a head start.😮 One was even talking botox!😮 They both looked amazing to me. I did some research. Young people are really concerned about aging, starting botox, using anti-aging devices in their 20's! It's a pretty big deal.

You are a pretty lady then and now and not that you care what I think😉😁 but I agree with you, you look better now and actually to me younger! Also well said about how people react to the grey…like you said they just see the grey and associate it with age and they don’t even take the time to look at the face! I see people who dye their hair and look older than me…great video!

Very true. What can you do when it looks white and you lose the darker roots which make people look very much older. Is there a way of getting roots darkened ?

Your silver hair is more becoming. I had a color analysis done a couple weeks ago, I'm spring. Based on your description of your skin tone, sounds like you're on the right track for your color season, I would say winter, cool and bright. I'm no expert though. As women in their 20s are getting their hair colored grays and even whites, your color hair should no longer be associated with age, IMO

Did you enjoy your professional color analysis? They seem like fun. I love spring’s colors and have experimented with Bright Spring’s color palette. The bit of yellow in my skin and my hazel /olive eyes seem like they might be warmer than winter.

@InfinitegardenbyBethK Yes, it was good, and I do believe it's worth it. I've been editing my clothes. Unfortunately, I was an overshopper 🫤 Some stuff was old, and some didn't fit, so it needed to be done. Also did the style analysis last week. I'm finding most items available to buy don't fit with my colors or style, and that's a good thing. Looking for quality over quantity. I've already brought items to a consignment shop, and more will be doing the same 😊
