I am so happy to see this. We got the math book for my little and she seen the language advertised in the back. She loves the way the math is laid out and really wanted the language but I couldn’t find anything on KZfaq to do some more research. She will be in 4th grade but she has some gaps. My thought is to start with book 2 and work through it a set amount of time each day. She will probably get through it well before the end of her school year and I will order the next one and just keep going like that till she is at level 4. Thank you so much for sharing. I am so happy I found your channel. I never knew about this line of curriculum till I found you.

Busy mom Of2 my daughter is going to fourth grade (did 3rd in public) and I’m going to do the same thing as you. She has gaps that we need to back track and deal with and can move fast on some and slow on others like you said .

We use their math program and it is so easy to go back to an earlier level and let the child master the skills before moving on. We had to do that with our daughter. She was level two but couldn’t grasp it so we went back to level 2. Both of my children are special needs and prefer something short.

Me too! I want to get 2 more of the level 2. One for my grade 4 son who is super behind, and one for my grade 5 daughter who is super behind. I think this will be perfect review for the struggling older ones AND it means I can teach them all together. Hint, hint, nudge nudge, Master Books ;)

Great review!! I love your videos. They have helped me so much! I do have a question for you. My son is turning 5 in November and I just don’t know what kind of subjects I need him doing in kindergArden. I already started using the “100 lessons how to teach your child to read” and he is a bright kid. Would like your input of what kind of subjects to do. I am also wanting to incorporate Charlotte Mason into my homeschool.

Thanks Rebecca! I was so excited to see this review. We are strongly considering this language arts program. My son (first grade) completed TGTB level one last year, and as you know that program is quite advanced. I'm thinking LLFLE level 3 might be the one to go with. It is hard though not being able to go through the books in person. I may end up getting both the 2 and 3 but have a feeling level 2 might not be advanced enough. Either way I'm really excited for this!!

This was a great review. I have looked at the samples on line, but this was even better. I wish there was a scope and sequence available for what is covered in level 3 (and what is reviewed from level 2) as I am torn between getting L2 now or waiting for L3 to come out.

I have reviewed the samples of the LLFALE on MB website and they look wonderful, with the exception of Level 2, which, in my honest opinon, has one MAJOR deficit and caveat...there isn't nearly enough reading, and there should be more than just recommendations of independent readers. In grade 2, intensive phonics is supposed to continue and offer the child many opportunities for reading cummulative material, including readers, that reflects the teaching of the graphemes taught, not just in isolation in a few words or sentences, but in actual literature. Many children, by this age (just completing grade 1 level material, typically around age 7), are still learning to read and a systematic, cummulative synthetics phonics program is essential. Although LLFALE teaches some graphemes for phonics, there should really be a deeper reading component utilizing cummulative readers. The English language is so diverse, there are a couple of hundred graphemes that represent the 42 sounds of the English language. Properly learning to decode words for reading, and encode words for spelling, via intensive phonics can easily take many children up to the grade 5 level and beyond. Research has shown that the most effective reading programs teach reading and spelling harmoniously, together, and not independently of one another. I'm afraid that this curricula does what so many other programs do at this level (around grade 2) and above: almost utterly abandons any kind of cummaltive reading, where cummulative reading opportunities should still be abundant at this level. There are many children at age 7 who are still in the early throws of reading, and reading should be integrated with the LA program, not mostly separated from it. In a thorough, systematic, synthetic phonics reading program, spelling comes automatically and becomes intertwined with the reading program, which is "killing 2 birds with one stone", as the old saying goes. Reading and spelling naturally go together, and should never be taught in isolation, but together, in harmony. When the graphemes are taught for reading and spelling variations, the child has a simplified manner in which to naturally learn, without taxing them or overloading them. It is also proven through research, that children retain the various spellings of the same sound when taught in groups of words, with same sound spellings. Ei. Teach the grapheme "ay" for reading; introduce many words with that same spelling pattern and use those words in spelling activities-encoding- (including copywork), as well as reading activities (decoding). Working through phonemic awareness activities, reading words and spelling those same words puts those words in long term memory for many children. Had this program combined the teaching of synthetic phonics for reading and spelling the various graphemes that represent one sound, in conjunction with the lovely presentation of other LA aspects, such as grammar, punctuation, vocabulary and writing, it would have been the perfect program. The LA program does look amazing, but the lack of any real reading component at a grade 2 level is utterly disappointing. The disconnect between the teaching of the graphemes for reading and the spelling words that aren't really associated with the graphemes being taught is also disappointing. Masterbooks has some incredible curricula, and I may still purchase this LA, but I will definitely be supplementing LLFALE with our current Jolly Phonics Reading/Spelling/Grammar program. I don't intentionally mean to be a "Debbie Downer", but I truly am disappointed in the Level 2 LLFALE, in particular, as this is the level our children require at this time. They could still complete most of the activities, but we will have to continue to supplement with JP, as our just turned 7 year old twins are still in the early stages of reading. We LOVE Math Lessons for a Living Eductation here, and I had so hoped that this new Level 2 LLFALE was going to be more complete, in regards to teaching much more reading, and having cummulative readers that supported the program available. If we don't purchase Level 2, I will consider Level 3, as our children will be more independent readers by then. Even then, I will continue to supplement with Jolly Phonics Grammar (which is actually reading/spelling/grammar), as the Grammar portion of the program is only 2-3 lessons a week. Thank you for sharing your overview of the program with us. :-)

it's not a big deal, just add in readers for where your child's reading level is at. I'm using abeka's readers, alice and jerry readers from Rainbow Resource, leveled readers etc. to supplement. I'm giving them a variety of resources to use and feel better to adjust based on my child's preference instead of following a strict LA program whose readers I might not like or my child might think are boring. This LA program allows for the flexibility and it's affordable so it leaves us homeschool moms with plenty of additional resources to choose from.

We tried this course and it wasn’t enough for us. Perhaps I should have taken my daughter back to Foundations Phonics because she still needed much more reading instruction. We ended up switching to TGTB level 1 and it has been perfect for us. Also finding independent readers isn’t as easy as it sounds. I like how TGTB has the lessons and the readers that are at the appropriate levels. TBTB really made it simple for us. Yes the lessons are longer but my child need the extra practice. Solid reading skills are so important. I have one in PK, two in level K, one in level 1, and one in level 3 in TGTB. It does take a good portion of our day but so worth it.

Update: We abandoned TGTB for All About Reading. Now after AAR 2, we are using Language Lessons paired with Sonlight Readers. It’s getting the job done for our family with six children in elementary school.

We tried this because it came really highly recommended. However, I found a few issues: The lessons for each topic are just too short...only one page dedicated to each subject. In the 4th level book the explanations were so technical, that I had to often find ways to simplify it and find more resources for to give them more practice. I really wanted to like it....

@@serenadarling4100 the wonderful part about it is you can add to your schooling if its too short for your liking. It's something versatile. For example add learning Spanish, piano lessons and or keyboarding lessons! Things that children will need to learn for the real world.

Foundation phonics is basically the level 1. That is what gets your student started on reading. It's been an awesome program. My 4 year old is starting it. She is too little to write but she is grasping the reading/letter sounds. My 6 year old is just getting ready to finish foundation phonics.

I just discuss the spelling list on day one of the lesson. Most if not all lists follow a spelling pattern. Then each day I have my children copy the spelling words in addition to the daily assignment paying special attention to the spelling rule and often having them mark the spelling pattern in each word.

I haven't used this, but I have used First Language Lessons and they seem very similar! The one exception is that First Language Lessons is done mostly orally, this is more of a workbook.

Thank you so much for this review! It was very helpful. I realize this program has a lot of writing and I had a quick question. Should my child be a good speller to do this language arts or should I not worry about it? (spelling is not my daughter strongest area)

You don't need to worry about it. The spelling is built in and there isn't a lot of writing really. A sentence to start and my daughter right now has me write it and she copies as she learns her spelling. Only up to three sentences towards the end. Compared to most LA it is light in the writing and their spelling will naturally improve

It looks like the lessons are shorter... broken up by day. in TGTB some lessons can easily take longer than 10 minutes or so. I have usually broken up my daughter's TGTB lessons over a few days to make them shorter, but this is appealing that it's already broken into shorter lessons. It looks like it includes all the same subjects like TGTB, except maybe art/picture study. It looks like it focuses on writing and writing aspects... lesson on "the good and beautiful" things of life. TGTB can be a bit direct with their beliefs on what IS good and beautiful, which may or may not be appealing to you. Hope this helps! I've only used TGTB Level 1 and 2, and not this one. Just looked at the sample and watched Rebecca's video. :)

I've been using TG&TB LK (Yes, the lessons can be quite long at times). Language Lessons for a Living Education looks like the same subject matter as LK, minus the Art, and mercifully shorter. I'm considering this curriculum for my 5 year old next year.....

@@kayking3313 I continued to use TGTB and just shortend the lessons by cutting out the "Daily Dose". There are probably a few videos about it on my channel. But thank you for this question because in the back of my mind I was trying to remember this curriculum. I'm still interested in trying it....What about you?

We are coming over from TGATB because it was considered "advanced" do you think a strong reader could go from TGATB level K to LLFLE level 2?

We're doing Level K TG&TB with my 5 year old daughter who is a strong reader. When I looked at the sample pages for Language Lessons for a Living Education, it looks like the same kind of stuff and on the same level (even though it's called level 2). I'm seriously considering switching to to Language Lessons because the lessons are shorter. But I do really like TG&TB....

My 6 year old first grader is doing TGTB K and Math for a Living Education level 1. Next year i plan for him to do Language lessons for a living education 2 and MLFLE 2 :-)
