Join me in troubleshooting and fix of a blown head gasket. We also changed the timing belt. Fast paced packed with dizziness. Rookie home video but serves the purpose. I did this job for $125.....Thanks to Music Revolution and my son Daniel

...i will be doing this to my 1994 2.3L Ranger that has turned into a LoW Powered Boat Anchor . But... i Will be installing head studs ..and New 19 lbs. injectors . The OEM 14 lbs. injectors clog and kill any fuel atomization that may have ever been intended for the 4 hole "spray pattern" . I hear the 19 lbs. injectors do wonders for these engines . This is the best video i have seen for these 2.3-2.5L engines . Thank You ! I hope HE said THANK YOU ! when You were done. LoL

@@mediajunkie2195 yup thanks, found it. So we're having trouble starting it back up. The battery is dead (haven't started the truck since December) and is showing 2 volts. I'm trying to jump the truck with my brother's car and the voltage drops from 14 to about 1 or 2 each time the engine cranks over (which it does really slowly). I'm pretty sure the timing isn't off because we lined up the markers and cranked it over by hand at least twice around (it rotated just fine) so we're thinking there's an electrical problem.

I finally got around to putting my Ranger back together, crazy I know, been busy with other things. Two problems so far. The timing marks cannot be lined up perfectly. I've tried everything. I line up all three, then go to put the belt on, and with the belt taut around the crankshaft gear, and the oil pump gear, then go to put it on the camshaft gear, the teeth of the belt and the teeth of the cam gear meet. Belt won't stretch anymore, and won't go in the groove. So I either have to rotate the camshaft gear half a tooth one way or the other in order to get the belt to seat in the gear. I finally just did that and it started and ran ok I think? Next problem is, how to put the power steering pump pulley back on? Do I hammer it back on? Or use the pulley remover to reinstall it?

How much harder would it be to swap the engine? You could leave the head and valve cover on and just pull the radiator and fan out, get the hoses, coil packs, alternator, and wires/sensors out of the way and and then unbolt the mounts and transmission and pull the engine forward and out of the truck right? I got a 2.5L Ranger/Mazda B clone that keeps walking off new timing belts, even with a new tensioner. I did the raw and dirty clutch pump test, didn't see any play in my crankshaft, I was gonna try changing the sprockets but I can't find any for my 2000 model. I can find a remanned 2.5l engine though from Jegs for around $2k that should do the trick lol. I told my dad it would be cheaper than getting another truck, he thinks I can't do it by myself with an engine hoist from Harbor Freight. What's your opinion Media Junkie? Think its a good idea? I'm definitely not a mechanic or anything, but I'm mechanically inclined and did my whole suspension, u joints, plugs, etc. right before finding out that I can't fix the old engine in it lol. I'd trust your judgement over my dad's any day. Any tips I can use to pull it off?

I am thinking I need to do at least this to my 1998 Mazda B2500. It had 25 lbs compression in #1 &#2, 70# in 3 &4, but it has been sitting 2 years plus in the drive way. Now the battery is dead, and gasoline is probably really stale. I am original owner from brand new and it has 305K miles. Everything else has been kept up to date (tires, brakes, clutch, alternator, etc.). I'd sure like to get it running again, before my wife and neighbors wear me out. What do you think?

Mark Greenbaum - This job depends on your mechanical ability. I am a seasoned mechanic and consider the task labor intensive but certainly not challenging. Be sure to take the necessary time making sure you have the timing correct on cam, crank, idler and oil pump gears. I would consider also having a machine shop do a valve job. I didn’t need to on my sons truck as the valve guides seals were in very good condition. Good luck to you.

Torque to yield bolts stretch as they’re tightened. Mathematically the best applied pressure is by use of a torque protractor. Ford Lima torque.to yield bolds have an initial and traditional torque value followed by relaxing the pressure. Then again application of an initial torque value followed by subsequent rotation in degrees.

you can't use long skinny extensions while torquing head bolts. 1/2" drive by 3" MAX if you must with a deep socket for extra length. You're way undertorqued cause you're not taking into account of the extension twisting and giving. Hope the gasket lasts.
@mediajunkie2195
@mediajunkie2195 6 жыл бұрын
That would be true if reliance upon the tooling and conventional click type inaccurate torque methods applied. But in this case not true. Why you ask? Modern head bolt fasteners with graphite impregnated coatings are secured to proper pressure value by torque to yield method TTY and not friction by tooling. Meaning only an initial starting friction torque is applied followed by rotation sets in degree about a circle. Marking the heads or nuts of fasteners and reference marks on work piece allow the installer to identify rotation amount in degrees. Stretch and proper fastener pressure are determined by math and not by friction. Your statement regarding length of extension holds true if reliance upon the cheap click type torque wrench which this is not the case. These bolts are correctly torqued. The Engine has 17,008 miles since this work was done. Good stuff and thanks for commenting.

Head gaskets aren't a wear item, unless it's a Subaru flat four or six. They blow because there's a problem with the cooling system. Timing belts are a wear item and need to be replaced at a set interval. Something like 60,000 miles. Head gaskets blow because the engine overheats. Do to a leak in the cooling system, a problem with the water pump, problem with the cooling fan or fan clutch, problem with the thermostat or clogged radiator.

I agree but no option to have head surfaced on a Friday afternoon. Truck has 33000 miles on it since this repair. Fingers crossed. He drives it 110 miles to school daily. Thanks for commenting.

Properly diagnosed? Or lucky guess?Low compression doesn't always mean a head gasket. Misfire with no codes, Id have put a vacuum gauge on the manifold before a compression test. Or test the cooling system for exhaust. Hell, put a dollar bill against the tailpipe. Be the difference between buying a gasket, or explaining to them they need a valve job, after the truck is torn apart. I wouldn't even put that head back on there without at least checking the valves. Really common problem on these with high milage to have recessed valves. Im genuinely curious to know how much longer that engine ran or if it still is. Really not trying to come off like a jerk or nothing, but unless you tested other areas off camera before deciding it was the head gasket, that is no proper diagnosis.

The short version? I was lucky. Is that what you want to hear? But saying that? I'm experience with engines. Mostly with planes and big boats. Low compression on two adjacent cylinders with the addition of adding air into each of the two with low compression equated to head gasket. Following this old video... Truck then traveled my son through college for two years. Guessing someones truck now but not sure.

@@mediajunkie2195 i guess if you put air into a cylinder at tdc and it came out of the spark plug hole of the cylinder next to it, then yeah, a head gasket. Just didn't see any of that or mention of it. Of course if you did, there'd people complaining the video is too long, some are here saying it's too short, then you got someone like me who's just picking it apart for some reason..

That is what happen to mine the valves are toast , what do they mean when they say 37 then zero the zero part is what im asking about0 to 90 degrees then 90 more ?

dude chill out, he did the same thing i did, dollar on tail pipe didnt show anything on my blown gasket.two touching cylinders no compression is a blown head gasket, not much your vaccume gauge gonna register there cept be irratic

@@ShannonP.-rd2nb Ok. Well mine had misfire codes on cylinders 3 and 4, which also both showed low compression, and it had absolutely nothing to do with the head gasket and everything to do with the valves, in my case. Same symptoms, completely different problems. Both are diagnosed differently.

37 lbs the first time, then retorque to 50, after they have ben torqued to 50 you do 90° its weird but its the stretch to yeild bolts.

@@mediajunkie2195 yes.. as mentioned in other comments, you could break it up into smaller segments. And if possible you could do voice over to describe your setups. If it's possible for you to go back and re-edit, then repost your video I think it'll be really helpful. You've got good camera angles and you appear to be going through the steps methodically.

@@greggumbs1935 I searched my hard drive for movie maker raw projects as well as raw videos. Unfortunately I must have deleted due to size. If you have good mechanical skills you'll be fine. Only troubles I experienced was correct head torque procedure. Be sure to use a torque protractor for proper torque angle. Also timing marks were a bit confusing. Lastly the marks on the gears and oil pumps were challenging because tightening the timing belt rotates the alignment marks. Good luck and if you wish to speak you can call me (Kevin) four zero four 775-one two one six
