Forces News has been given access to some of the new British Army facilities on Salisbury Plain. As the Army Basing Programme comes to a conclusion after seven years, our cameras have been let inside garrisons across the Wiltshire training area to find out how thousands of troops and their families returning from Germany have settled in.
The last decade has seen a huge shift in where Army units are stationed, with new 'Super Garrisons' created to house the additional personnel. Among the sites transformed are Tidworth, Larkhill and Bulford.

@ASTAR obviously feel sorry for them but why should Homeless Vets be treated any different to Homeless Civilians? If anything the Vet in most cases had a better chance to get Flats ,houses etc and in most cases have a much easier life than the average Civvie . I still say a Germany posting was a great benefit to the British soldier and his/her family, mainly because of the cultural experience and taste of something different. Retaining Sennelager Training Area and the camp has its advantages, but it's not the same as actually living in the place.

Wow, they are certainly actually sticking to their promise this time of giving soldiers actual good homes and areas to live in. Certainly better than those the boys got when they came back from the first and second world Wars.👌🏼 You really couldn’t tell the difference here between this and any other large-scale good quality housing project with actual modern facilities that will last and age better over time. This certainly isn’t the housing projects of the 90s and early to thousands. All they need now is some trees and to make sure the whole base runs on green energy (Solar panels on roof which we can clearly not see yet). Something which I imagine will be implemented very soon under new policies. Well deserved to all. Great work here.👍🏼

You could easily believe this was absolutely anywhere else in the UK that was a large-scale expensive industrial scale housing project. Even the public facilities look amazing. Did you visit the base or just going from what was visible on Camera? Because it looked as if it was behind and to the right of the end of the Building they showed part way through, which makes sense especially as there's Historic Buildings on Site they don't like the Car parks in full view at the Front of the Buildings where there's going to people walking to and from the surrounding buildings and it seems to be laid out in a similar way to Fort Bragg and other Bases that we've had upgraded in the US, it's time to start on Retaining the Troops/Sailors/Airmen as they Marry and make a life in the Services with the support of the Services and not leave for a Civilian lifestyle that can seem lonely and isolated even if your family is around you trying to support you....

The Accm is so much better than I lived in from 88 - 07 both the Quarters and SLA. Except for Holland, 4 Years in Holland in a privately owned house, 3 Bedrooms and a Man Cave in the Attic. The Army is not starting to give a damn about the men and women in uniform, it is about time. Do all of the GSMs allow the men and women in the Z Type SLA to use the Cooking Facilities they pay for now? I read some Soldier Mag letters and online posts that certain WO2s and WO1s were cutting or allowing plugs to be cut off the equipment in the kitchens. Or are these young men and women we trust with Live Ammunition and Rifles not allowed to cook for themselves yet?

Compared to Germany the guys lock themselves in the rooms at night messes are closed due to no one using the facilities and the shops on camp are over priced and the food quality is questionable since the got private contractors in thus forcing you out of camp to buy food . The local area isnt bad but is lacking resources for any kind for activities . if you do want to venture out to say Andover /Salisbury you are looking at a taxi fare of around £100 . In summary its been done on the cheap the blocks are falling apart and how long will it be until they are not fit for purpose and the community is more like being on a tube in London than Mary Poppins . its not ideal but its okay but i find there to be less unit cohesion due to the set up and the garrison being run by civvies ..

They updated the facial hair standards. Officers now qualify for moustaches. And to be fair, it was a requirement of soldiers for hundreds of years. Looks a bit silly, but nice to return to tradition.

most of these bases should of been scrapped years ago and relocated or merged to units further up north.nearly all has wasted millions and probably billions on operational and planning issues especially larkhill .the ra should of been moved to scotland 70 years ago along with most salisbury plain with most of the affiliated units moved up north. when the uklf was closed in wilton it should of moved up north instead of andover.there was and still is acres and acres of unused mod land up north with all the access and benefits of wiltshire. absolutely disgusting waste of money.

Bob Jackson Why would any belligerent nation want a nuclear hot zone in the country they want to rule and eventually have to deal with the fall out. Hack the computers in the power plants, water storage and purification facilities, gas pipelines and electricity generating plants and get them to all close down or open the sluice gates to drain the reservoirs. Anyone wanting to take over doesn't really want to rebuild what they have bombed, they learned that the last time.
