In this video I look at our own BMW i3 60Ah REX which is now 5.5 years old and has covered a whopping 128,603 miles. Is this the highest mileage i3 in the UK? Let me know. But the car genuinely feels like a 20k mile vehicle with no knocks or squeaks at all. These EVs certainly can do the miles.

My 2015 i3 REX has about 116,000 km on the clock. Despite this, it drives like it is new. I have not noticed any battery degradation yet either. I would like a bit more than the 120km range, but with the REX, it doesn't really matter too much.

you're gonna keep it for years? You won't be enticed by all the new technology in newer EVs? One of the biggest issues I have with BMW is that they didn't include simple safety features in the i3 such as Blind Spot Detection, Lane assist/keeping, radar Active Cruise Control. In some markets, BMW removed the autonomous driving features but still charges the same price. Most people have to software code their i3s to even get simple things like WiFi or the ability to manually turn on the REx. Its well built car but its missing some modern tech.

@@mamadouaziza2536 True, but one thing that is often overlooked with the i3 is how efficient it is, due to its drivetrain (which compares well to newer EVs) but mainly down to its lightness. Why would I want a Mercedes EQ or Audi e-tron just to have to put twice as much electricity into it? If you do the average commute then its perfect, and the cheapest way to get around.

I put 83k on on my 64 plate rex between 2015/18. Just checked DVLA mot and it's done 114k in Jan 21, so not far behind. Failed with tyre carcas catching on body work and threads exposed... so sounds like trackng was badly out. I had 3 broken wheels on potholes in the time I owned it, and everything thing that's common go wrong with them (petrol flap release, electric flap release, KlE failure, drive mounts broke). Despite all that, I'm likely to buy a 94Ah REX as my next car as it can do everything I need. Even took the 60Ah down to Le Mans in 2016, with communal camp kitchen and cooking gear on broard, and the guy who designed the interior spotted it and came for a chat. Great adventure but REX was essential in France. Chargers weren't working and had cobwebs, so the locals knew not to bother. Hopefully 5 years later things are better.

I just bought a 2015 i3 REx in Canada. I love it so far - my first EV after owning many IC cars. Only has 63000Km or about 40000 miles but drives like brand new. I am paranoid about the broken motor mount issue I have seen mentioned on the 2015 and 2014 cars though. I removed the rear boot cover and confirmed I do have the plastic motor mounts. I can't tell if the bolts have been upgraded and I'll be calling BMW soon to see if they can run the VIN for me. I figure since it's 2021 and the car was being driven daily by the couple I bought if off that I likely have a solid car. Fingers crossed I get this kind of mileage out of it!

@SimoniousB
@SimoniousB 3 жыл бұрын
@@mamadouaziza2536 the ccs charging I fully agree with (limit it to 7 Kw/h or thereabouts is best), but the battery management software does a good job. I did read the consumer software interface does leave a low (approx 10%) and high (approx 20%) charge gap, hence the difference between 18.8 kw charge capacity (approx) being shown as 100% and actual 22 kw capacity to always maintain the draft needed for battery health and longevity. I have read interviews with the chief designer and on the i3 forum where one of the briefs was not to risk an early reputation for battery degradation. Hence the assurances you can charge to 100% from say 90% 9 times and that is the same, in regards to degradation, as charging from 10% to 100% because the software will do the cell discharge / recharge management and move it around the stack as needed between the cells. In other words, when the consumer display says 100% it is maintaining a state that isn’t overcharged to cause degradation. There was even an assurance in an interview, a few years after the original i3 release, that so few failures in degradation have occurred that the design team were confident the batteries will invariably outlast the car’s lifetime.

Can't believe it, that's my old car :-) . It was a company car, great car, finished with it at 121K miles ( 111K of the miles were off the battery, remainder off the REX). It didn't get that much rapid charging as my commute was 80 miles return trip and so with an overnight charge was ready for the next day. I used EcoPro Plus on longer trips much to my Wife's annoyance :-) Only maintenance ( Apart from tyres) was the Petrol pump replacement, always running very tight on mileage and because the tank was so small and Petrol stations minimum fill levels, I wouldn't fill until down to about 20 miles, then you get caught with broken chargers so a number of times the REX ran dry, ( so sort of my fault with the pump) I'd still have 5 miles reserve on the electric, amazingly never completely out but certainly nail biting stuff.

@GoGreenAutos
@GoGreenAutos 3 жыл бұрын
500-1000 cycles?? They can do far more than that. I know of a 24kWh Leaf that has done 6,600 DC rapid charges, thousands of AC chargers (ex taxi) and the battery is still at around 78% SoH & Nissan's have the highest degrading batteries due to lack of cooling. Looking at the ECU in this i3, the figures say: - Driving cycles counter = 5,071 - Driving cycles counter with range extender = 799 OK, that is driving cycles and not battery cycles. But as you say, its got to have done near 2,000 battery cycles.
@EinzigfreierName
@EinzigfreierName 3 жыл бұрын
The prismatic cells from Samsung SDI used in the i3 have a much longer cycle life. The datasheet for the 94Ah versions e.g. says "1500 cycles at full 1C charge/discharge" down to 80% state of health and even 2500 cyles to 70% SoH. Actual numbers vary a lot with temperature, charging power and other factors but I would say i3 has very good batteries compared to other EVs.

@GoGreenAutos

Where are you getting that done? Is that something a BMW dealer has diagnosed? I ask, as I'll be surprised if they get involved with changing bearings - dealerships normally just change whole parts, so would only fit a whole new reduction gearbox. Or if you've not had this diagnosed yet, I would suggest its normally (on EVs generally, not the i3) the motor bearings which get noisy, rather than the gearbox bearings (as these sit in oil).

Either a cold or fully charged battery, so the regeneration is disabled until the battery is in a state that it can accept the charge?? All normal. Can't remember specifically on this vehicle as its sold when I made this video. But yes, I probably did. I do on most EVs as is easy to do (with a lift).

Its a range extender model. It has a petrol generator on-board which chargers the battery when it gets very low, so if you've not made it to a charger, then it will charge while you drive to enable you to get to that charger or destination.

I think that electric cars do copy petrol cars for valuing pricing. I am not sure that people know how to price an electric car I feel most cars are valued as age and miles done. how else should we value when setting an electric car price going forward
