About a month ago, I posted a video lamenting my poor decision not to have factory roof rails included on my camper, leaving me with limited options for carrying my Maxtrax traction boards. The response was stunning, with that video receiving ten times as many comments as my videos typically see.
It became impossible to keep up with replying to everyone's ideas, but there were numerous similar or overlapping concepts offered by numerous viewers. In this video, I will look at the most frequent suggestions I received.
My heartfelt thanks to everyone who took the time to think about my challenge and provide their input.

To be clear: I DO now HAVE A SOLUTION and am not looking for additional ideas. :-) I just have a few details to work out for the installation. This video was simply to share all the other great ideas I won't be using now that I've found a product that will work for me. And I forgot to mention it in the video, but the solution I am going with (assuming I can make it work, which I'm 98% sure I can) was also a suggestion I received from a few viewers. Hopefully I'll have that all put together shortly and be able to share with you in the next couple of weeks. Thanks again everyone!

@@weriesblack1375 Sorry about that, it wasn't intended to be a joke or misleading. Right up front at 0:32 I did explicitly say: "I have found a solution that I'm 98% sure is gonna work and I'm not quite ready to share that. I need to do a little bit of work on it and I will make a dedicated video about the solution that I've found." I _tried_ to warn you. 😄 What I'll be using is a new product that has been largely unseen and I didn't want to clutter _that_ video up with 18 minutes of talking about what I'm not doing. 🙂 Hopefully have that out in the next couple of weeks depending on what the weather does here. 🙂

I have the same topper on my Gladiator. I would contact Topo Topper and have them mail you 2 awning brackets and mount the brackets on the passenger side of your topper. That gives you a clean mounting surface for an improvised holder for your tracks. But you already have a solution. Looking forward to seeing it

Ok, you’ve sold the next vid. Cool, I’m looking forward to it. My best guess from my very distant observation is to build a tray under your rear swing-out and just slide them in. The also obvious unknown is the reduction in departure angle. Looking forward to your fix considering the amount of assessment that’s gone into it. Thanks!

I know some people have attached solar panels to trailers with VHB tape with long term success. No drilling. In any case, I think you still need some sort of guard to protect the front edge of your camper from low limb collisions. Part of the old roof rack might be used for that, or anything that could take the damage instead of the front edge of the camper.

I’m eager to see what solution you come up with, I really haven’t found a usable way to put my ARB tread pros in my jeep so they always end up floating around the back of the jeep sliding around, banging into hatch, or they end up, standing up against the one remaining seat in my second row. However once the trailer becomes part of my full-time travel system, I could easily just mount them on the side of the trailer. I would suggest is that you might look into just a very, very simple gear trailer something with two lightweight trailer wheels doesn’t even need to have suspension but it would help to have suspension. You can mount a couple of Jerry cans maybe a cargo box some traction boards; I’ve seen it a few times usually up in the coast range, and also up in northern Washington, also, SCCA, Miata racers used to use it to carry their toolbox and their race wheels to the . They’re always Homebuilt solutions, I don’t know of anybody besides maybe the people to the cricket camper offer already made gear solution like that. The key here is to make it small compact and lightweight so it doesn’t obstruct your view in traffic during lane changes it doesn’t limit your accessibility and it doesn’t become a hazard when backing up.

@softroadimgthewest, Donald, I shared the original video and your response to my suggestion comment with a friend who’s a off-road truck fabricator. His suggestion; build a hinged mount over the back window of the cap so that the trax can be swung up (open) to give you the view you desire while it protects the window while off-road from stones, etc.. He has done this on a few smaller off-road/overland rigs. His other suggestion: build a hinged mount over the top of the fuel cans so the trax lay flat over the top of them. This also helps protect from the cans possibly being stolen.

Great vid. I think we all appreciate you taking the time going through the suggestions we provided and telling us you considered them. I mean, we assume you do to some degree. But to take the time to tell is means a lot. More than I would have expected. 11:05: tell us about those bags attached to the head rests of your seats. Storage on the back of the seat interferes with the knees of rear passengers. But those bags are slick and up out of the way. Great place for a small first aid kit, snacks for the rear passenger. Water bladder for uninterrupted dehydration while driving. Small kittens or chickens. Or a variety of things.
@softroadingthewest
@softroadingthewest 4 ай бұрын
Those headrest bags are made by OBR ADV Gear. obradvgear.com/ They generally make products designed for motorcycle and UTV riders, and I'm pretty sure they don't even offer these headrest bags for sale. The owner of the company has (or had) a Frontier and developed some prototypes, and he reached out and offered me a set (which also included a pouch I have on my sun visor). I shared them on the channel a couple years ago but it must not have spurred enough demand for them to put these into production, because I don't see them on their website. They are nicely made and I have found them useful. I imagine there must be similar headrest pouches available out there somewhere.

@@softroadingthewest Thanks. I went searching just now and found that a company makes molle panels for head rests. Then there are many bags that can be mounted. There was also a 'tactical' headrest panel. But it only came in OD Green and Brown. And lastly, I found one that mounts on the inside of the seat. I.e. in the space between the driver and passenger seat. That's pretty promising, too. I don't want anything on the back of the seat because it'll interfere with passengers' knees and the dog being able to move around. Thanks again for the reply.

In the last video I was going to suggest getting another side door installed over top of the existing "fixed" window on the passenger side (the one on the drivers side looks like its deep enough to just go over the fixed window).. and attach the max Trax to that... that would offer protection to the plastic window from getting damaged amongst other benefits. Looking forward to seeing the solution you chose!

Donald, after watching this video, it occurred to me that you can buy 2 roof racks that fit/attach at the top of your door wells. Take a look and see if you can put two racks running from the driver and passenger doors. I bet for less than $150.00 you could install two roof racks that are removable and you can bungie the boards on there. Thule and Yakima call them bare roof mount rack systems. I see that amazon has several options less than $125.00. So basically the traction boards would lay, left to right, out of the way and easy to get. EDIT: LOL, I'll leave my comment as I just saw your post after I wrote it....just in case your idea doesn't work out. Enjoy your videos!

I am not sure of the max tracks dimensions but i had an idea that should be able to use existing mounting points. I was thinking you could use mounting points on you cab, from old roof rack. Fabricate a structure to hold them in front of tent. You could angle them like wind deflector or overhang front windshield slightly like a visor. Can't wait to se what you come up with.

I know you've already passed on drilling holes and mounting rails to your camper roof, but I just wanted to add a little insight to that in case you ever come back to it later (which I can def see the need for in the future, having rails up there would just be too useful long term). I get why a lot of people would have told you not to drill because of your climate/location. My gut feeling is that anyone who gave you personal anecdotal info on drilling, sealing, and then still getting leaks in PNW probably just didn't use the right compounds. A lot of people will tackle a job like this and feel like anything sealant will work, and may already have general purpose silicone on hand. That will absolutely not work! But there are sealants, mostly from marine construction environment, that will seal the drill holes and never leak in your lifetime. Sealants/adhesive like Sikaflex, 3M 5200, and even stuff like PL Premium Window and Door sealant are super tough to remove from a well prepared surface. In fact the bigger issue would be if you ever thought you wanted to remove the sealant, you might damage the surrounding material trying to get rid of it. So, I do think you can successfully drill and seal those holes, you just need to use the right stuff.
@softroadingthewest
@softroadingthewest 4 ай бұрын
Oh I'm sure it would have been fine. I had consulted with Topo and already had a tube of Sikaflex at the ready (which is what they use), but leak fears weren't the only reason not to put them up on top. I opted not to have Topo install roof rails in the first place because I really wanted not to put anything up there and keep the whole thing as sleek and low-profile as possible; it would also be awkward and cumbersome to access the Maxtrax on the roof and put them away after use. I only started looking at the roof again when I discovered I couldn't put them on the driver side cargo door as I had originally planned. Fortunately, a solution has since emerged that will allow me to keep them off the roof after all. 🙂

@softroadingthewest
@softroadingthewest 4 ай бұрын
Haha, it's funny you mentioned that, because that comment came up a few times on the original video and I actually shot a response to it for this video, but ultimately edited it out because it was not really a mounting suggestion per se and this video was already too long. But this is a fair question since such a well-known recovery guy has made that statement, so here are my thoughts: I like Matt. I watch his channel sometimes. I've met him, and we have mutual friends. But I disagree with Matt's Maxtrax message. To me, if a vehicle is unable to move forwards or backwards under it's own power without _some_ kind of intervention, it is stuck. That is undeniably THE definition of being stuck. If you're stuck and you are able to get yourself out with Maxtrax, then perhaps you may have also been able to get yourself out doing some digging with a shovel. But digging with a shovel *is a recovery method.* If your vehicle requires some kind of recovery effort in order to move, then I'm sorry, it *is* stuck. Clearly yes, it's not dramatically stuck like a rig rolled over off the road on a steep Utah mountainside, but if it won't move without _some_ kind of help, it is stuck. On the flip side, I would say that many towing/recovery customers you see stuck at Sand Hollow could have gotten themselves out without "making a call" if they'd had a pair of Maxtrax on board. Very often you see those people have attempted to get themselves out using their floor mats, sticks, or whatever else they could lay hands on. Maxtrax simply has taken that concept and perfected it, and anyone who watches Australian offroading has witnessed these boards recovering countless truly stuck vehicles in a wide variety of scenarios and terrain. Personally, I doubt that Matt _actually_ believes a vehicle recoverable with Maxtrax isn't really stuck. That sounds more like a clever sound bite repeated to rile up those dreaded "overlanders." Hapless tourists spinning the tires of their rental cars in beach or dunes sands - who could've easily been extracted with Maxtrax - are the bread & butter of recovery companies near beaches & dunes. Of course you would discourage ownership of a simple tool that would cut into an easy and profitable segment of your business. 😉

There were many many many suggestions made which I didn't cover in this video...I had to limit it to the ideas that came up numerous times. As it is, I have at least one other commenter saying this video was way too long. 😆 Yes, a few people (perhaps you among them) suggested various adhesive solutions. In the first video, I did mention that worrying about leaks wasn't the only reason not to mount them on the roof of the camper. They would also just be really awkward to access, would potentially impact my gas mileage, and would be vulnerable to the low-hanging branches I frequently encounter here in the PNW. As far as using an adhesive solution, the camper roof is white because Topo wraps the black powder-coated aluminum with white vinyl to reflect sun and reduce heat accumulation. Any adhesive approach would only be as strong as the vinyl wrap's adhesive, so one would need to cut away the white vinyl wherever anything was going to be adhered. Which certainly isn't impossible but there were already multiple "cons" to being on the camper roof at all. 🙂

Which bits would you cut? I wanted to address the most common ideas that were each suggested by multiple viewers. I could've easily included at least 10 more ideas, but actually limited it to the most frequently repeated suggestions that came up over and over. The point here was to actually _discuss_ each idea, not just slam out a Top-15 list. Years of doing this has taught me that if I don't cover a certain minimum of detail, *many* viewers are simply unable to connect the dots and ask further questions, or tell me I'm wrong because I didn't point out this or that. Or I get complaints that I have glossed things over too quickly and should have gone into more depth. 😆 One thing is certain: it is absolutely impossible to please every viewer every time. I do apologize that your experience was unsatisfactory this time. A few strategies I use when a video I've clicked on feels too long to me: • Hover over the chapter links to see what all is going to be covered, and skip ahead to the bits that seem interesting • Set the playback speed to 1.5x or 2x speed • Watch something else 🙂
