Welcome back to Managing the Mess! In this video, I'm taking a moment to reflect on the past school year and use my insights to plan for the next. As art teachers, it's essential to acknowledge our anxieties and worries about the upcoming year. I'll share tips on how to get these thoughts out of your head and onto paper, helping you clear your mind and prepare effectively.
I'll dive into:
Reflecting on what aspects of your teaching and art room management you want to drop or add next year.
Analyzing instances where students broke rules to inform better instructional planning.
Evaluating successful art projects and considering which ones to modify or eliminate.
Reviewing personal expenses for your art class to brainstorm future art orders and what to request as donations.
To assist with this process, I’ve created a free printable available on my Teachers Pay Teachers store. This printable is designed to help you organize your reflections and plans, providing a useful tool to refer back to as you prepare for the next school year.
Download the free printable here: www.teacherspa...
Let's wrap up this year thoughtfully and step into the next with confidence and clarity!

This year we got a professional day to create the specials schedule for next year! I've had a new principal the past 3 years, so I feel you there. Complete administrative turnover at central office last year and this coming year we will have complete turnover at the building. 😬 Student teachers are awesome! Remember you get contact hours credit towards your license & salary schedule, so make sure you submit that. We need to cultivate passionate young educators.

Dear Katie, One thing I would like to let you in on. A lot of times when you share your teaching experiences and what you do everyday I end up putting myself in the feet of the students even though I graduated out of the school system in 1997 but some of the experiences that you share really hit home and inspire me to bring out things that I would be scarred to tell everyone but you have made this a safe place to share things so thank you for that. Tip: is there a way that you can make the parent contact like a lone thing and not added onto like reseating someone or isolating someone, etc. unless it is like emergency? Some kids' parents may take things too far and make the littlest thing like the end of the world for kids versus participating in working with their kids to build their kids up right and you never know when a cool off time may be just what the child needs. Nonetheless, You sound like a teacher that the students enjoyed or ended up enjoying so that is a success. Congratulations on another successful school year. Have an awesome summer of putting Mrs. Jarvis to rest and being Beautiful and Sweet Katie Jarvis for a bit. - Dwight

I want to be a better teacher in so many ways. The K-1st used a lot of negative gestures, profanity, inappropriate words, and more. It was frustrating in an already exhausting year. I love your ideas and hope you can take more off of your plate. I know you will miss your daughter being there, but what a role model you have been. Whatever teachers she gets, they will be appreciative.

If you have natural hair paintbrushes that look like they're having a bad hair day (bristles that are frizzy) use a bar of white Dove bar soap to condition their bristles. This is really good for fan brushes, filberts, and pointed rounds

Can you take a break from "all things" teacher related and enjoy family and self-care time? Getting a new principal can be tough as well if they don't realize how much you do and lacking enough planning time.

It sounds like we will have a draft of our schedule before summer starts for us (we have one last week). So, I’ll know planning time etc. before the new principal starts. I’m not hopping for much bc our part time art teacher only helps me one day a week. LOTS of travel and relaxing reading planned for the summer! ☀️ Enjoy the summer! I love that we get a fresh start in the fall!

I don't think we should think of "racist" as a bad word. Maybe they'd be better off calling the language or action racist rather than the person, but they are right to call attention to issues like this.

Thank you for stating that more eloquently than I did. The kids are throwing the word around frequently as a joke. I’m not sure where it comes from as we have a very diverse school. It easily rolls off their lips if someone says pass me a black crayon or something. They somehow think it is funny and they are not using the word to spread awareness or stick up for themselves or others. It used to be that way with the word bully too with kids. One little thing would happen and they would yell “bully”! It’s not a good way to work through problems starting by calling the person a name. I really should clue in the counselors that they should work it into their lessons.
