Funnily enough I just mounted a Cannabis Rex and a Red Fang in my 2 x 12" cabinet. I like their sound much much more than the pair of stock Laney HHs (per some reports these are supposed to sound like Vintage 30s).

Hey Darrell I owe you a big thanks, after watching your video about blues in the style of SRV. I had a bit of a breakthrough. I'm less than 8 months from starting from nothing with 55-year-old fingers, so it was all I could do to just work on the first four bars. Hitting chords on the fly still eludes me -- but for some reason I nailed that 7#9 chord a few times in a row (broken clocks, right?). And it kept happening. It's a good thing I don't have roommates, because they'd be ready to kill me after a day of playing the same 4 bars about a million times. This is the first time what I was doing actually sounded like rock & roll. I got a huge dose of "I can do this". It still eludes me, and the "nailed it three times in a row" still only happens once in a while, but progress is progress.

Darrell, I’ve been doing something like this with stereo systems since the late ‘80’s. Friends who heard my system (always inexpensive components because I was/am poor) often expressed how good my system sounded compared to their much more expensive systems. The biggest irony of it was when a physician friend who owned a VERY expensive system was ready to swap components with me. I was running a pair of cheap Realistic cabs with some no-name pawnshop cabs, both powered by a low watt Realistic amp. I tried various dis-similar speaker cabs over time, and never found a combination that didn’t sound better than running just one or the other alone.

I've been using different speakers in the same multi speaker amp for decades. my best sounding amp is a AA763 Super reverb with 2 Celestions , one alnico, one ceramic, and a ceramic Eminence and an alnico Jensen. It gives any guitar and any player a great sound. One that no one has ever heard before. Very complex and incredibly musical, and as I tell everyone who tries it, "sorry, it,s not for sale"

Can confirm, speakers make a difference. I have a Marshall DSL40C that's notorious for being fizzy, shrill, and almost uncomfortably bright with the stock Celestion 70/80 speaker (I had to run the mids dimed and the presence almost cut entirely). I dropped an Eminence Private Jack (50-watt greenback clone) into it and man. What a difference. It's just lovely with the EQ at noon, with maybe a touch of the presence dialed down, and that's it, both with humbuckers and single coils. Great video, as always, Darrell!

I have a Mesa 212 that came loaded with 2 Celestion V30 but I swapped the top speaker for the Alnico Blue. They both compliment each other and I like it. It has pushed the tone up more to the high end. But still has that low end growl. I like Alnico magnets mixed with the ceramic magnet. The Alnico speaker is louder than the ceramic speaker. I have a Princeton reverb loaded with one Celestion Blue and that’s were I got the idea to mix them because that Princeton sounds amazing.

I have a 2x10 Deluxe Reverb - custom baffle - with one Eminence Legend ceramic and one Eminence Legend alnico. I adore this combination - the two 10's push more air than one 12, and the strengths of each speaker combine alchemically with the other to sound better than two of the same type ever could. I encourage everyone looking for "that sound they hear in their head" to experiment with mis-matched pairs...

Very good comparison. Kept thinking i needed to here some picking on clean especially the lower wound strings to hear how it handles more resonance. At some point if you're interested, try a high rms audio speaker 12" only, nothing smaller. Play clean, then add modulation(s) for some samples. I've been doing this for 60 years. Lots of gigs and recording. Never been happy with the guitar "voiced" speakers. The results will be obvious, good or not so to your liking. Thanks Darrell!

Some of the best advice I have been given regarding guitar “gear” was when Jeff at Hime Amplification in Nashville recommended I use two different speakers in a 2x12 cabinet he built for me. My chosen speakers were WGS ET-65 and WGS Blackhawk 50 (alnico, 50w version of their black and blue). Unfortunately WGS wasn’t able to ship the Blackhawk because of their being short staffed during the quarantine, so Jeff put a Vintage 30 in the cab for me to use along with the ET-65 until the Blackhawk is available. That cabinet with the two different speakers creates a dramatically different sound than any single speaker or multi speaker cab with all the same speakers that I’ve heard. It sounds much bigger, more full yet also more open, and with more character. It definitely seems to be a case of the two different speakers together equaling more than just 1+1.

swapped «Blue Marvel» in my «Peavey 30 Classic» with «Cannabis Rex». huge difference, but I decided to keep that old stock speaker: it wasn't that good at overdrive, but was soothing and warm being clean. Cannabis Rex turned out to be clear and glassy, even though all the video reviews I saw showed it darn muffled. Moral: there are no good and bad ones, but you should check them yourself to hear the difference.

I did this with the Monoprice Stage Right 15w tube amp, threw the 70/80 speaker in a 2x12 with cannabis rex (thinking the v style eq of the 70/80 would smoothen out the warm, low-mid hump I hear from the c.r) There's definitely something do it, and between panning and an eq in post, I like the "wider" sense I get from varying the frequencies coming out of each side of the cab.

SPL doesn't need to be perfectly matched. Even if one is slightly louder, the tone is still significantly affected by the quieter. This is especially true if the quieter is more pronounced in a specific frequency range. If it's more midrangey than the the louder, it would still help the cab have an overall four round or warm tone.

I have a Gene Lies amp combo. Quite literally built in a barn in Kansas before my time, this has to be the best all-round amp I've ever owned. Yet there's not a good reason why. It's a pretty basic Plush amp circuit with a transformer coil to knock the hum down (which doesn't work, incidentally.) I suspect the reason behind its clarity comes from one simple fact: nobody would build an amp this way today. Modern combos, cabinets, and heads are the same in the sense there is an amp plugged directly into the speakers. The Gene Lies comes with two tweeters, two woofers, and two sub-woofers wired into a single, integrated whole. Capacitors and resistors pepper the circuit between the speakers to manage the signal before returning to ground. It means the blasted thing has about five pounds of noisy stuff and fifty pounds of wooden box holding the mess in place. It's a cube, three feet on a side, two switches on the back, one volume knob (which I've never had the stones to crank past 3 o'clock where my ears started bleeding), and a refrigerator handle to "carry" the thing around with. Convenient, it is not. However, plug anything into it from magnetic to piezo pickups and even microphones, and the sound is outrageously good. I've had amps that sound good with piezo and microphones, and I've had amps that work well with magnetic pickups. Never have I found one other than this Gene Lies that doe it all. Which brings me to this video. Would mixing the speakers in a 2x12 accomplish the same thing?

If it doesn't work out, I might have to get a 4X12 Marshall Cabinet and stick in the Vintage 30m Creamback H, Alnico Creamback 90, and maybe this Hempback. I wonder what 4 different speakers in a cabinet would sound like? Or maybe even building 4 X12 size cabinet and putting in 2X12 on bottom and 2X10's on the top? Then maybe an offset cabinet with a 1X15. Maybe one day ill have to do that build. All these speaker ideas are making me want to do things. haha! Thanks for the video though!

I am confident my ears are not as well "matched" as your microphones. Josh Smith talks about running into both a Fender Super and an AC30, he believes this combo results in the best blend. Doing this in a single cabinet is a little more within reach of most of us. thanks for making this.

Hi Darrell, I plan on buying my first good quality guitar amp soon and I was thinking about getting the tonemaster deluxe reverb. My budget is 1k, and would love to hear your suggestions. Great video btw :D

i'm sorry but the high-mid spike on that alnico is just too much! nothing's going to beat the feeling those first few clean chords brought being played through the celestion with the cannabis rex. just beautiful.

Two complementary dissimilar speakers can indeed sound huge. After auditioning a very large selection of speakers courtesy of Matamp's speaker wall, I settled on a Celestion G12H Anniversary paired with a G12M Heritage. Both have the same sensitivity (so neither dominates) and the same power handling. Here the similarities stop - the Anniversary is an articulate punchy speaker, whereas the Heritage has a complex, woody tone. They complement each other very well. The only downside of dissimilar speakers I can see is that they're more difficult to record. To my ears, the V30 is thin and harsh clean, and fizzy dirty (the WGS Alnico was even worse, bordering on the unpleasant with overdrive). For a sweet chimey tone, the Celestion G12M Heritage "Greenback" is very hard to beat, IMO. I wonder if people like V30s so much because they've lost some of their top-end hearing due to exposure to loud music?

Very nice video, but I was kind of disappointed not to hear the Cannabix Rex and the Alnico together... your Thumbnail kinda suggest that to be ideal pairing

For the sake of testing, have you tried direct line recording from the head? How does that compare to micing up a speaker?

Hi Darrell, thanks for the video. Just checking on the Austrian Audio OC18s, don't they require phantom power? How did you provide the 48V when setting up the mics for the cabs? Or did you connect it through an interface? Any advise on this if I am in an area without an interface?

They both sound really nice, it'll just depend on the preference of the guitarist. I'm kinda imagining 4x12 cab with 4 different speakers😂

Fortunately, I don't need anything like this - I'm very happy with what I currently have - and even if I wanted a combo, I'd rather buy food, make the house payments, etc.

I think it would be a much better thing to do half hemp - on the inner circle of a speaker do normal paper and the outer circle do a hemp for bass /low mid articulation.

Each speaker is beautiful in its own right. If possible use all three, Rex with each, 2 2x12s ....

Matchless have been doing this in their 2x12 combos for years. Changing speakers is just about the lowest cost and most effective ways of getting a better tone. BUT speaker efficiency will also play a BIG part in tone. Alnico magnet equipped speakers typically have higher efficiency than a ceramic magnet speakers so one speaker will likely contribute more to the tone than the other. Your mic's alone can't compensate for that.
@johanlucasgruner1975
@johanlucasgruner1975 4 жыл бұрын
True, but I don't think the mics need to compensate that, because if you use that cab without mics the alnico would still contribute more to the tone. So the recorded tone should be very close to what you would hear sitting in front of that cab

I have a 2x12 vertical cab loaded with an Eminence Texas Heat and an Eminence Swamp Thang. Been that way for years. Sounds great. I tried the Swamp Thang with an Eminence CV-75, they clashed, not a good pairing.

that guitar is delicious! thank you. deciding whether to get rid of my cannabis rex, i haven't had success in a single cab w/ various amps. I do have a emi gov speaker that i have always wanted to blend with the c. rex. Especially in my Laney vc50r:alliance, as it's a british meets american style amp.. hmm!
