"female led films have to be larger than themselves" No they don't. The problem is that Hollywood thinks that they do, so they tend to try too hard, preach a lot, and include a lot of junk that audiences don't want, while leaving out actual character development.

Also, Looper is wrong on this fact, the film DOES have an alternate ending where Phoebe Waller-Bridge takes the hat and whip as the new Indy, in fact, it has no less than SIX alternate endings, and they all sucked. Hopefully there will be a deluxe edition with all of them, just to prove the internet rumors right, but just thinking about this logically, If this franchise is to continue, this movie DID need a new Indy, as Harrison Ford is clearly, from his acting in this movie, already too old for this sh!t, either a younger new actor as Indy from the trip back to the past, or a new character to take his place in the movie's present (1960's). This should have been Shia LaBeouf, as he literally attempts to take Indy's hat in Crystal Skull, but he couldn't handle the intensity of the shoot of that movie, or the critical ridicule he received for his role, and he refused to return for this one. We may get stuck with Phoebe as a new Indy, since there will probably not be another Indiana Jones with Harrison Ford, and no other surviving character in this movie is really fit for the role, and Mutt was already 'killed' off screen in the plot, so he (or a replacement for LaBeouf), can't do it.

@@sprinkle61Shia LeBeouf never would have worked as a long term replacement, as he is too controversial and would have been fired before long. Besides, I remember everyone hating Mutt when "Crystal Skull" was out, and thinking LeBeouf was terrible. But I forgot, as much as Indy fans hated Mutt, they hate women more, because they can't get laid.

@phenel I couldnt agree more. My wife and I went out during covid to see some of these movies and regretted it. Not because we were concerned about covid but because they were shit movies. I must say though that our movie going experience covid didnt really affect. We have a drive in threatre that wasnt really hindered by covid, other the the concession and washrooms being restricted. People werent afraid to go to theatres to see movies during covid if it was an option. They just didnt want to spend money or go through the hassle on shit movies.

Well, COVID-19 had turned most people away, indeed; the most perplexing part was that Hollywood studios released films in theaters between March, 2020-spring of 2022, and they were expecting people to, actually, turn out (in droves) to watch them!

@@mariusmatei2946 oh, no doubt that COVID an "impact". But it is not even close to the main reason as to why it's falling apart. I'd wager, even without COVID, we'd be seeing a massive downturn. Their focus changed and so did the narratives. It had little to do with the pandemic and more to do with politics and agendas.

Black Adam ultimately flopped because Warner Bros. Discovery stupidly announced the end of the DCEU and reboot to the DCU. So the last 4 or 5 DCEU films, that were yet to come out when they made the announcement, failed to get an audience because they were seen as being pointless. Regardless of their quality (Black Adam was a decent enough film) They should have announced the reboot AFTER Aquaman 2 (the final DCEU movie)

I wanted Black Adam to succeed, but I had a feeling it wouldn’t. I’m not sure why, but I just never saw Dwayne as a super hero/anti-hero. And I’d like to know who thought 2016 Ghostbusters would be a hit.

They‘re there for different reasons. Matrix 4 was plain awful and - surprisingly - cheap looking. Tenet was big cinema, a big idea, well performing actors - but way too cerebral, chockful of boring exposition (e.g. the exposition in Inception, a favorite of mine, was done way more entertaining)….

Ben Hur no one was expecting it to be a success. The old one was an epic, no one expected a new one to even come close. Catwoman was a disaster before even going on theaters. The 2016 Ghostbusters was an abomination from the trailers. Black Adam was expected to be bad from it's announcement. I mean DC+The Rock. What to expect? Indy was also having an 80+ years old Ford and the Crystal Skull course on it from the start. The Last Dual was an insomnia medication. Matrix Resurrections was known from trailers it was going to be bad. I mean many of those where expected to be bad and Everyone outside Hollywood was sure they would be a failure in the box office.

Yea that was confusing to me too. Hal Jordan's Green Lantern is one of the core founding members of the Justice League, that's like saying Iron Man was a lesser known superhero before RDJ took on the role despite being a founding member of the Avengers. Actually, same goes for Deadpool now that I think of it - Deadpool had become one of the most popular characters in the comics long before there was ever a movie.

Dial of Destiny's box office is 100% the fault of Disney. They did everything wrong. US release date Friday 6-30-23 month & half after Canne so the story was ruined for most by spoilers. Limited soundtrack release & we go on with Disney's errors.

When it comes to West Side Story the problem is that my favourite director, Steven Spielberg, was simply out of his element. Musical theatre is not what he he knows. So he tried putting present day social commentary into a story that already had social commentary built in. The two the types of commentaries clashed to the point that they ruined the entire concept of the story itself. Also, the cast was simply not as adept for the parts they played as was the cast of the original movie, so they seemed more like caricatures of their characters rather than fully developed. I had been waiting to see this film and was terribly disappointed with it.

The reason Westside Story flopped is because you don't remake perfect films. It's pointless. It'd be like remaking Star Wars or animal House or rain at the last dark or mash or the graduate or the big sleep or some like it hot people will stay away in the road because they find it offensive. I assume you were being sarcastic about Black Adam being a hit, I had hopes because the rock hung his reputation and probably a chunk of money on promoting it himself, when the company behind it gave me the impression they didn't care and were happy that someone else was the face of the film so they could hide in the shadows when it bombed.

Have you ever seen the original Ben Hur?? People often deeply resent when Hollywood decides to remake an Oscar winning classic. It is extremely rare for one to rise to the level of the original. The original Ben Hur won 11 Oscars. There were techniques used in that movie that had never been seen before. Most people that have any Golden Age of Hollywood IQ, just would not waste their time or $ on a remake of a movie that already has such a status. The critics decimated the remake, because all of them have seen the original.

It important to note that this movie was viciously criticized by historians and middle ages enthusiasts. It's level of historical inaccuracies, especially when it comes to portraing of medieval society, is "impressive". As biggest example, there are a lot of evidence that "antagonist" was framed IRL.

I wanted to like The Last Duel more than I did. I'd actually read the book by Eric Jager, published in 2005. It's a sober account of the events leading up to the duel in 1386, and very sensibly leaves the reader to decide who was or wasn't guilty. The film's three unreliable narrators format was interesting, and they obviously had to added elements (a non-fiction books is allowed to leave gaps; a film isn't). Unfortunately, the film didn't quite manage to juggle all these elements successfully. Nevertheless, it was an interesting watch. I'd much rather a film-maker aimed high and fell a little short, than played it safe and ended up being boring.

And I dgaf what people say, and yes I know he hated his role in the movie as well, but I really liked Green Lantern. My only complaint about WW84 was the whole "love story angle." I'm not a comic book reader, and I'm more into Marvel than DC. But couldn't they come up with a BETTER story for WW?? 🤷‍♂️

Why? He literally has it in his contracts he cannot lose a fight. He won't even admit who the character is, same way this shit says "anti hero", he's not. He is a villain. He's a core villain of the character he refused to have in his movie. The guys ego is so huge he's trying to actively rewrite a character because he THINKS he looks like him.

I rarely go to a theater. I get the DVD or see it on TV years later. I've watched Catwoman again and again. Other than a moment where she batters down a door it's perfect. My objection is that cats are not strong. A cat woman would not have Superman strength. Tenet permanently disappointed me with its plot holes. I got the DVD and played it several times expecting the pay off of looking back and seeing how it all fit. Like Memento. Instead a line in the film said the Russian arms billionaire had made his fortune in 2 weeks, married an English socialite, had a 5 year old son. Also, the Protagonist is a spy with great skill with weapons but doesn't know the name of a major player in such markets. There was a woman in India was an insider in Tenet already as well as a partner with the Russian. But instead of telling the Protagonist a mysterious Englishman goes with him to launch as assault with giant sling shots. Finally the Indian woman tries to kill someone to wrap up loose ends. Why? The future civilization has no name for itself and buried a time reversed item to travel slowly one day at a time to contact someone in Russia. Didn't the Future have recordings and books of ancient languages? The Future sent back 2 reversing carousels. Why 2? Why was one in Russia and another was ??? How was the other one found?

Ayn Rand wasn't a Libertarian, she was an Objectivist. The phrase "going Galt" refers to highly and creative and productive people going on strike if the government does not allow them to sell the results of their labors at market prices and retain control over their ideas. Also, when it comes to A Wrinkle in Time, it's a totally sexist thing to say that female lead films need to be "larger than themselves." For female films to succeed, they just need to be good films and, unfortunately, too many female creative teams are too busy fighting the patriarchy to actually make good films.

The audience for West Side Story was limited by the decision to have a large portion of the film in Spanish with no subtitles. The decision alone guaranteed the film would have a relatively small audience.

Close, but that's not entirely it. The Omicron variant of Covid-19 made older audiences wary of going to the cinema, and the release of "Spider-Man: No Way Home" stole younger audiences. On that note, "Cats" (the 2019 film adaptation of the stage musical of the same name, directed by Tom Hooper) had an ensemble cast that included Rebel Wilson, Taylor Swift, Jason Derulo, Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, Ray Winstone, Idris Elba, James Corden, and Jennifer Hudson, but underperformed both critically and commercially, due to opening the same day as "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker".
