Did anyone else notice that most of these "Fails" refer to studio interference, rewrites, and reshoots? It's almost like studio's micromanaging their filmmakers is always a bad thing or something!

More likely, studios interfere and reshoot movies because they're bad to begin with. And many movies have re-writes and even re-shoots, that's part of the process.

I am of the impression that the director is hired for a reason. They should let him do his job. Studios should be true to the original vision. Producers should stay out of it, unless feedback is requested. All a producer should contribute is money. If the producer wants to direct he should just direct. People who do both should do one or the other. Just my opinion.

Interesting list. Of the bunch, I only saw Final Fantasy (hated it) and The Alamo(okay) at the theater. I eventually saw Evan Almighty and A Christmas Carol on cable TV. Of the 22 movies, at least half are remakes or reworks of stories and movies already done, sometimes multiple times, in some cases much better. Old stories being retold, just because some Hollywood bigwigs and special effects experts were ready to pour millions into new dead end movies. Ben-Hur with Charlton Heston is a timeless classic. There's no amount of money and special effects you can use to make a better version. The fact that even I, with my limited movie experience, had sense enough to avoid seeing the vast majority of these movies is telling. If I could see these movies were bombs without wasting my time to pay to see them, why weren't the Hollywood experts able to see? I could have saved the studios millions of dollars if they had just run the ideas for these movies by me first.

I love, LOVE, Titan AE. One of the few Western animated films not aimed entirely at kids. Great art, great voice acting, great soundtrack. Shame it didn't do so well. I enjoyed Final Fantasy too - it was a pretty amazing experience technically, even though the movie itself moved along a bit too slowly... certainly enjoyed it a lot more than many "must see Blockbuster" movies anyways.

It amazed me how badly they missed the point of Mulan in the remake. Its as if they didnt even bother to watch the original. Giving her special powers completely ruins the whole point. She isnt special, shes a normal girl, and THAT IS the point.

I hear you. Original Mulan had to struggle and work extra hard to overcome her physical limitations. Using a combination of sheer bloody minded determination, brains and a bit of luck she had a great impact on everyone around her. New Mulan is special, no struggle, no obstacles to overcome, just her with her Chi and being a stronk whaman.

I LOVE John Carter. I think it's actually a really solid movie with a great script and excellent use of world building to learn the world of Barsoom as the story unfolds. I love how it takes the time to introduce John Carter to the inhabitants of Barsoom and how they learn to work together throughout the film. I find the special effects / CGI to be absolutely beautiful and the use of color breathtaking at times. More people should give it a chance. I liked Titan A. E. I watched Poseidon when it came out and remember thinking the effects were well done, but I didn't know it got the Oscar nod. I do think it is underrated, especially when compared to all the other 2000s disaster movies that came out back then. It also still holds up today, which tells me it just had bad luck, which happens to some good movies. Sadly, I don't think it will get "found" like Clue or Shawshank did, and while I would never say it is as good Shawshank, I think it is about on par with a Clue.

It honestly surprises me that Titan AE bombed. I remember when it first came out to theaters going to see it an enthusiastically watching it and in my hometown of Santa Rosa there was this event going on at what was then the new Roxy theater and there were a bunch of re-releases of animated films which included Titan AE and there was a bunch of people going to see that too. It makes me wonder if Santa Rosa was just some area where the film actually had some popularity because I remember watching it again at a friend's house too. Or maybe it's just because me and him are nerds and we were into this kind of film back then. Since it is from the former Fox animation studio well some of their films have been put on Disney plus so I hope this one does as well. I also remember seeing Final fantasy the spirits within in theaters. I was shocked to find out later how much it's underperformed. I remember at the time the animation looked so real. I didn't see the adventures of Pluto Nash in theaters, but I do remember seeing it on DVD sometime later. I didn't have much of an impression of the film. It must have not been memorable because the honest truth is I remember the music from the DVD menu a lot more than the film itself. I don't remember anything from the film besides the fact that the music from the DVD menu did play to also open the film as well. So I see why Pluto Nash failed. Considering how much of a powerhouse Disney is now, it's pretty amazing that they had three years in a row of the number one box office bomb. Anyways I didn't see the lone ranger in theaters, but I saw it on DVD I think as a Redbox rental a little later. I honestly enjoyed the film and didn't realize at the time that it bombed. I remember Ben-Hur being released, but never saw it. I guess that must have been the case for most people. I remember seeing a trailer for Mortal Engines. I found the concept interesting, but also ridiculous at the same time. I guess more people thought the idea was just too ridiculous. I've heard that Terminator: Dark Fate was good, it just was too late after 3-5 disappointing so many people. I thought Genysis was at least better than Rise of the Machines and Salvation, but again, none of the later films can compare to Judgement Day. I hope to watch Dark Fate some day knowing that maybe finally they have decided to end the franchise on a high note in terms of quality. Too bad it bombed so bad. I like how you explained 2020. Honestly I just wouldn't have included that year just because so many theaters were closed due to the pandemic, but I do like how you explained that year and what could have been for the films. Honestly both movies mentioned are very flawed and I have zero intention of seeing Mulan(2020) as they made her a Mary Sue anyways instead of allowing her character to grow. I love the animated Mulan, it is my favorite Disney renaissance era film, but the live action one is just plain terrible. Wonder Woman 1984 I enjoyed when I saw it in theaters in late 2020, but even then I saw some serious flaws. I do appreciate that the main bad guy was defeated not by fighting, but by wanting to see his son. The lasso of truth helped him realize what he was doing was wrong and sometimes I appreciate that kind of villain arc more than just a fight to the death. The pandemic was still going strong in 2021 so I'm sure a lot of films still suffered. I know some did well still though such as Kong vs Godzilla which I'm happy performed well on such a year. I wonder how well it would have performed withouth a pandemic.

I'm always surprised to hear king arthur legend of the sword was failure. I've seen it in the cinema 4 or 5 times, bought the 3d bluray when it came out, and later bought the 4k bluray when that was released. While the setting up for sequels might have hurt the movie, i think the main reason for it's failure was just people and critics just thinking it was going to be just another tellling of the same old story, and weren't expecting the new take, and therefore being critical about it being the old story whit a whole lot of "stupid" stuff added to it. But those who went in open minded where treated to an amazing film, it's a more magical mythical telling of the story. And combined with guy ritchie's way of story telling (the "growing up" and "what happened with the vikings" scenes are great examples) The amazing soundtrack, great atmos mix and fun use of 3d (not over the top, but also not as lame as it's use in avatar) make for a great film.

I'm not surprised at all. In fact, I disagree with most everything you cited. The soundtrack was meh, the cinematography was nauseating and bland, and the fact that they struggled so hard to tell the next four movies instead of telling one great one was what caused that movie to fail so hard. You wish to sell a universe or future installments? Great. Start by telling ONE great tale and then gently nod to future tales. Do not concentrate on establishing the next four before the first one is done. Many other movies that had potential also had the same issue of trying to plant seeds for future installments instead of telling the one great story and letting the audience clamor for more. As a huge fan of Arthurian lore, this movie hurt me the most because I had such high hopes for it. It took me a couple weeks and I still never made it through one viewing in a sitting. I kept falling asleep or shutting it off because it was boring me to tears. The 1982 version (Excalibur) is still the reigning champion. I would love to see a fleshed out, multi-movie parse on the lore but not at the expense of each individual entry trying so hard to set up the next one in line. Tell ONE great story. Dabble a drop or two hinting at the next one in line. Let the audience do the rest. Damn shame really.

Terminator dark fate was a fantastic return to form for its franchise the problem with it was the amount of lacklustre movies before it

It was basically the reason I chose not to see it. I like to believe only Terminator and T2 are the only films in the series

King Arthur was definitely not bland. It was a creative retelling that hooked you with likable characters (even the side ones), interesting cinematography, and don’t get me started on the soundtrack! A cult classic. People just weren’t terribly interested in anything that wasn’t Marvel at the time.

It's based off a book series, maybe a good standalone movie but it didn't do the books justice.
