Do you view any of these actors differently after having seen them in these scenes?

The turning point for Meg Ryan's career was the disastrous plastic surgery, not appearing nude. In general, you can look through this list and say that movies that were successful helped careers and movies that bombed harmed them. Maybe nudity helps associate a particular actor more directly with that success or failure but otherwise I doubt that is particularly relevant to casting agents any more than any other aspect of the role.

Eva Green is one of the most underrated actresses. After Penny Dreadful, I will watch anything with her in it. Her elegance and poise, as well as her acting, is just so hypnotizing.

Kate Winslet did a few nude scene projects prior to _Titanic,_ and a few afterwards. She is utterly perfect as an actress, and she is in no way fat or overweight.

Elizabeth Berkeley got such a raw deal after Showgirls. That movie is much deeper and more substantive than it gets credit for, usually it's just written off as a quasi-X-rated movie that exploits the actors. It's a very introspective and disturbing look into the entertainment industry as a whole and the Las Vegas industry specifically and how the industry chews up and spits out vulnerable women like discount chewing gum.

Meg Ryan's career stalled when she had an affair with Russell Crowe during the filming of Proof of Life. Her image was the sweet girl next door, and the adultery flew in the face of that. Made it hard to keep the career going. Also, she was nearing 40, which ended her career as the lead in rom-coms.

When it comes to the times Kate Winslet does it, it ALWAYS makes sense for the character in that scene. She's one of those few who only do it when it makes sense for the character in that scene. There are too many who do it just for the sake of doing it, doing it for the sake of trying to get away from a situation where they;re pigeon-holed into certain genres (See Elizabeth Berkley in Showgirls), or because they're told "You need to do it", when they really didn't.

While I personally don't care, I'm not convinced that nude scenes are ever necessary. Good writing, acting and direction can convey anything. It's all about the box-office boost.

Whenever I watch Blue Lagoon, I don't even think about her nudity or find anything sexual about it. Such is the power of that movie that the sombre nature of what is happening is all you are left with. It is a powerful story and very sad. They needed to be naked to show off how people would be without the constraints of civilized society having that peer pressure on them. It asks fundamental questions about how we are. Her performance was brilliant.

"Showgirls" was NOT the 1st NC-17 movie, but "Henry and June" in 1990. I know this because I worked at a multiplex in San Francisco showing this. We had to check ID's and make sure that no one under 17 came in. I also worked at a theater that showed "Showgirls" a few years later. "Showgirls" was actually the 1st NC-17 movie to get a wide release.

I had forgotten about _Caligula._ I've been a fan of Helen Mirren since first seeing her in _Excalibur._ I'm surprised not mentioned was the graphic nudity in _The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover,_ which avoided an X rating by risking no rating at all, but on its poster, at the bottom, a knife and fork clearly are set up to resemble an X as an x-rating...

Oh, please. Actors have done nude scenes for decades without consequence. Aside from a small group of prudes, no one cares. The bottom line is, an actor's career is only as good as their last one or two films. Also, their offscreen behavior can play a big part; for example if they involve themselves in any controversial issues (overtly political, or doing illegal things), that can be a death knell for their careers. Being butt-naked in a movie is NOT one of those factors.

I don't understand why it's such a big issue. I've bathed nude at the beach many times. Maybe we're more relaxed with it in northern Europe. I remember a classmate telling me, when I was at the beach with my secondary school class, that she didn't find naked men attractive. I should have said: So you think that's why I do it? Abroad I don't do it unless it's a designated nude beach e.g. Plage Orient on Saint Martin.

My agent told me I had to be completely nude for my first acting gig and it was for a cartoon voice-over part! 😆

Most of these were probably nude but could have been just implied nudity and you couldn't see anything. Probably left out of this list is Denise Richards and Kevin Bacon from Wild Things.

It not the fact they did nude scenes in movies that hurt or bustled their careers. It was ether just a bad movie, or they were never that great at acting in the first place for the most part. For others it was something they did off screen that hurt their acting career, like Meg Ryan. She should of left Dennis Quaid first then ran around had flings all she wanted.

I remember being in magazine shop when Charlize Theron appeared in the edition of Playboy that had just come out. One of the clerks noted it in the adult section and sneered that her career "was over." Yeah, right.

I've seen those Ewan McGregor nude scenes. It IS a big deal. Made me feel very inadequate 😂

Helen Mirren was a well-known actress since her youth, long before "The Queen" was made.

I missed Jennifer Connelly from the list. She started her filming carrer really early, and when she reached 20y in the Hot Spot movie, that was impressive. She became a woman, who could use her naked/half naked body confidently several times in her movies.

American society has this strange hangup with the human body, on one hand you get a movie with dozens of murders and that's okay, but one hint of side boob and the scene needs to get cut if you want a any rating other than NC 17+. Now I don't believe in gratuitous nudity just for the sake of it, but if the story is worth telling and the scene requires it and the actor is happy and willing to do the scene, then just enjoy the movie and the story it's telling. It shouldn't be such a big deal.

It was interesting watching In the Cut the first time as it was in a video store in South Korea where you were assigned a room with typically 2 seats. I was there with my friend and his wife. I'd never tried a 3 seat cinema before!

I think this whole "Oh my god they're nude-drama is so american." I feel it is so goddamn ridiculous to film an after-sex scene with girls always covering themselves with the sheets as if they have not just done what they did and it was so embarrassing to show themselves in front of their partner. The same is true for the guy wearing pants like immediatly afterwards. It breaks the immersion. It's like no director filming those scenes ever had sex before. This kind of censorship is just awkward. Worse, making something awkward when it clearly is one of the most natural things happening in the human experience. Now look at me. Making a big deal out of nothing, just like the industry does.^^

Let's be clear. Any negative public response to nude scenes is from women. Men don't have a problem with it. 😂

With porn being so easily accessible I don’t understand why we need nudity and over sexualization in mainstream movies. Nudity almost never adds anything to the plot.

I have personally spent at least 10 minutes of time pausing and rewinding each of these scenes, judging and critiquing each one of these actresses and i must say they are all extremely talented....(especially brooke shields!)

Re: Kate Winslet. That scene in Titanic was perfect. Nothing to be ashamed of. Her revealing a little boob made it really feel like Jack was going to be distracted and nervous. Exactly as he should have been. It worked perfectly. And it wasn't gratuitous at all. It was an important piece of the storytelling. I think Sharon Stone's flash in Basic Instinct did the same thing. It showed that she was in charge... And the reactions from the cops interviewing her was perfect. IMHO

Helen Mirren believes she did the first post Hayes Code full frontal nude scene in “Age of Consent” in 1969. Since then she has been recognized as one of the greatest actresses of her generation. Kate Winslet won an Oscar for her performance in “The Reader” in which she appeared nude. OTOH Jason Segel did a full frontal nude scene in “Forgetting Sarah Marshal” that passed without much notice. Hedy Lamar’s full frontal nude scene in “Ecstasy” in 1936 played in “art houses” for decades.

Dornan is actually underatted. In the movie about Herve Villecheze he was very good in for HBO and the series with Gilian Anderson where he played a serial killer.

I’m a pretty gullible person, but I just can’t buy Sharon Stone’s story that she genuinely believed when they asked her to take her panties off, that it was because their brightness or color was messing up the shot. Nor do I buy that she genuinely believed they wouldn’t show her private areas in the film. I believe they told her all that garbage, but I don’t believe a woman of her intelligence would buy such a story. Why did she go along with it? I think she felt she had no real choice in the matter, because of her contract with the studio. If you sign a contract in the movie industry without taking certain precautions, in the eyes of the law, you’re now studio property, and if don’t do what they want, when they want it, they can sue you to the point of ruining you. I personally think she pretended to go along with it, then at the premiere she put on the finest performance of her career when they got to that spot in the film, she played that she had been betrayed. She was betrayed, but not in that way. The industry molested her in a way that the law couldn’t touch them, but I think she knew as it was happening that she was being molested. It was both consensual and under duress. She was blackmailed into doing the scene. That’s just my opinion. I could be completely wrong.

Nudity in acting is a test, of how much of _themself,_ an actor is willing to put on the line. Anyone who’s too protective of themself, is not someone who sacrifices their all for the sake of their art and their craft; they’re not as serious, not as committed. Of course it should fit in with the story, and the artist should vet the work before they commit to it, but in most developed countries other than the U.S. (where film is more industry and less art), nudity is the first step to being considered a serious artist.

If they film is good no one cares if the actor or actress gets naked all not. Besides Helen Mirren and Kate Winslet have got naked loads of time and everybody thinks they are great actresses.

It didnt hurt Alexandra Daddario's career so shes the exception to the rule. Meg Ryan did it as a desperation tactic. Her career was on a downward spiral which was because she screwed over her ex Dennis Quaid and she was also blaming everyone else for her movies tanking. She failed, no one came to see In The Cut and shes still acting bitter.

I do think Sweeney is pretty. I like her acting more. She has not got enough movies or TV made to be called a great actor only she has been great in the movies I have see and I am waiting to see her new movie "Anyone But You" 2023. I do not let nude or no nude scenes decide of the actors. Like "Showgirls" 1995, I do not believe anything could have saved that movie. Though, it was not a bad movie vice the major stars lack of great acting in the movie was passible in watching. A not so good movie cannot be blamed solely on an actor when it can be the producers, the company picking up the movie, writing, director, and/or the editing.
