Very useful review. When the Kickstarter first appeared I found myself getting a pisound and raspberry pi 4, for which blokas’ free patchbox OS Linux distribution provided MODEP (the free version of MOD’s ecosystem, which you mentioned, but not by name), pure data, etc. So zero curation but a lot of raw functionality!

But while a bit masochistic, it was fun trawling for plugins here and there. Very easy to build and install - I’m up to 450 by now, but obviously none of the fancier mod ones are available. I mainly wish there were more sophisticated midi sequencers easily available.

I have used the PiSound & MODEP setup, and it is very usable. Costs around £150 for a full setup, Rasp Pi, Pisound hat (Sound/MIDI ins & Outs) and case. And once setup you can have it boot in MODEP mode, so you have this sort of pedal setup for very little money running off USB power. I am thinking of getting a few of them, when you can looking for a simple one device effect unit or the odd drone sound very handy. And just patch and edit on with IP address on wifi browser.

These sort of boxes look great to me... on paper. Having to connect to a computer every time you want to move a virtual patch cable and having to flick through several pages of menus just to turn a knob would kill my creativity. Moreover, in some cases the lack of immediacy is a real issue. When a feedback loop spins out of control and you quickly need to adjust a few settings, there's no time to go through menus. Of course an external midi controller could help with that, but then you get the issue that you forget which knob is mapped to which setting. These things are great for set-and-forget use, but most of the time I just want to patch and tweak ;). That said, I can see the value for people with a different workflow. Awesome review!

Poly digit/beebo also uses the LV2 plugin format and I've started converting their mutable ports to MOD as well. It works, but a few things are needed. Most importantly: a nice looking UI that honors Mutable (any help is appreciated. find me on the forums :)) I'm also already working on a mixer that has pre/post-fade sends which certainly helps with building multi-instrument effects chains. (dsp is done, just needs .. UI) So, many improvements coming and indeed the firmware and most of the modules are completely opensource (you can also run a version of MOD from a usb stick on any computer!)

I think I will wait for the 1010Music version that does NOT need a computer, It will have a great GUI touch interface screen and control with lots of inputs and outputs to be used in my effects loop (aux loop) of my mixer (no there is not one coming, but if 1010Music did design another "box" for effects it would be fantastic, no doubt). As soon as you reported the need for a computer to program this hardware I was out. The trouble with hardware linked to computers is eventually the computer hardware/software/OS moves on and the old hardware become a landfill item. Just like my Tascam interface/MIDI CC controller I purchased for WindowsXP...it was NOT supported in Windows7. Stand alone hardware is a beautiful thing, but as soon as the manufacturer says "editor available" I get scared and if "editor needed" then NO WAY!! Thank you for another best- in- the-business review loopop!!!
@james2749
@james2749 3 жыл бұрын
That is the exact reason why they do not use an app to program it. You access the device directly through a web browser by connecting to it's ip (no internet required) this means that the the hardware will always be usable as long as you can connect it to a browser with no need for their developers to keep maintaining it
@WildernessMusic_GentleSerene
@WildernessMusic_GentleSerene 3 жыл бұрын
@@james2749 A web browser is an app, it decodes HTML/CSS and Javascript and PHP. Browsers are updated all the time, and must be compatible with computer hardware/OS. Plus if USB becomes an obsolete standard, then you still end up with a brick if the Dwarf is not firmware updated, or there isn't a physical cable conversion. IF you want disposable devices, any computer link will make it obsolete.

There is no x/y modulation on microfreak, it is just "pressure" by way of how much of your finger touches the key. For true x/y modulation on a keyboard formfactor there is the K-Board by Keith McMillan which is more like the microfreak with no z motion only actual pressure, and the upcoming Osmose from Expressive E which does have real moving keys, the full MPE X/Y/Z parameter set and the extremely deep Eaganmatrix synth engine under the hood.

Almost like skeuomorphic design was never rejected :). I've got a PiSound with the Blokas Linux and enjoy playing with this, but as a nerd (not a musician) I find the interface gets in the way rather than enhances the experience. So much screen space is needed to do anything interesting. Also annoying is the time taken to work out how things work - different pedals work in different ways. Currently much prefer Zoia, but I'm going to dust off the Raspberry and rewatch this video whilst playing along.
@AaronLevitz

Basically, the interface is thought of in a way that a conventional pedalboard works. That's exactly why we call it pedalboards :) If you are familiar with a normal effects pedal setup, the MOD WebGUI is in every way a graphical representation of that. Then you have the CV plugins that "spice" a bit things with logical operations that you can use on the effects/plugins. Anyway, we want to say that we are paying attention to your feedback :)

One question: as far as I understand, the USB Host port can not be used to add an audio interface, which might be interesting for some things - e.g. a drum machine with seperated outputs... and, well, another one: is there a module to record stuff(audio as well as midi) onto internal or external(USB) storage? And as two is just too small of a number: do you know about the "hackability" of the device? So can I, if I want, as a software developer, use the sources and modify them and put modified binaries (eg a Kernel with audio drivers for an external interface ;) ) on the system, or is there some kind of hard to circumvent protection against that?
@loopop
@loopop 3 жыл бұрын
All of those are great questions for the company (I don't know about the audio interface, I didn't go over all 700 modules, and I didn't explore the source as if I could...) - if you email them and get an answer please copy-paste here!
@modaudio
@modaudio 3 жыл бұрын
On your first question, there are some hacks to allow it and more is being tested/tried on that (join our forum and you will get more info). On the second one: there are not yet modules for that internally, but with the file handling feature being a novelty, sooner or later those plugins will appear. Last question: the device is pretty hackable and we love users that like to experiment with that sort of things and help us improving the devices ;)

Quite interested in this. But, if you need a laptop to patch it just use VCV on the laptop instead! Much easier to modulate stuff, plus there's 2000+ modules (quite a few of which are direct Eurorack ports with identical sound and functionality). Also free! This looks a total pain to use, having to make inputs/outputs discoverable first for CV. ...just why? I suppose it's better for live use, and less to worry about with PC specs/interfaces etc. But unless the effects are absolutely stunning and not available using anything else, I'll just stick to a computer running VCV and VST plugins.

Any device that is pitched as able to be played standalone and yet *requires* a computer or tablet to create something is misguided at the outset, IMO. The makers of such devices are ignoring the most-cited reason people choose hardware instruments: to get away from the computer or DAW. Nonetheless, this is an impressive accomplishment in capabilities and I wish them well.

@@LiamFarleyMA I don’t understand why you say “Except” at the beginning of your reply. I do not claim that they are hiding the computer requirement, just that the requirement reduces the appeal to the many people who like completely standalone hardware.

@@aptudo You said "Any device that is pitched as able to be played standalone" I've looked over the Duo page and can't find anywhere that it's pitched as that, which is why I responded saying that it wasn't pitched as being a standalone tool so I don't feel like they're missing anything.

@aptudo 3 жыл бұрын
@@LiamFarleyMA It's unfortunate I said "pitched as being able to be played standalone" because I'm not criticizing their marketing materials. I'm simply saying that instruments/devices that can be played standalone should, IMO, also be able to programmed standalone to appeal to the many people who like making music without computers. If we disagree on that, that's perfectly fine. I'm sorry for my poor choice of words.

You only need the WebGUI to create your own pedalboards. It's only a "window" into what is happening in the device. Pretty soon (in one of the following OS releases) it will be possible to create pedalboards from the device. So no need for the computer, except for really specific things.

I love the concept they have, but all of their prices are over where it seems they should be. Not sure if that is because of sourcing or manufacturing issues or what, but it seems that something is just not adding up. If this thing had some VCV integration (unless I missed something) I could see going the full $499. Seems like that would be doable.

@bryantwalley

@@bryantwalley I know what VCV is, but what does that have to do with "integration" ? VCV has its own internal module and processing format. Also the CV-ports work completely different. @@kisho2679 You can't yet record inside the device (simply because there are no plugins available at this moment for that), but you can store and reproduce audio and MIDI files inside.
