Good info! I have an original in an 86 Kramer and was going nuts trying to tighten the arm down from the top.

Thank you SO much! That little piece that holds the arm (at about 2:15 ), all of a sudden became loose and I thought I had wrecked the whole damn thing. And I thought going to a guitar-shop to fix it, would cost a fortune. But you simply had to open the hatch on the back and tighten that screw? Ha! I did that and now it's good as new. Seriously: thanks :)

It would make more sense to put the nylon washers inside, and the metals washer (that rotate with the arm) outside. If reversed, the metal washers scratch on the floyd body. How could FR not come up with a good solution yet.. I cant understand. The old style looks better, it at least takes the friction and wear into account and makes these parts replaceable. Great video, thanks by the way.

Great info. You’re a big time saver. The guitar you’re working with in the video is the exact guitar that I am working with. Ha! My issue is that the socket where my arm screwed in cracked. Thanks again.

Thanks mate!!! Very useful video for anyone who have a problem with arm! Like You said FR, Schaler (not under FR licence at this time) will be covered. Problem starting with...Floyd Rose Trem Licence is gone!!! Now all factories doing it WRONG!!!, producing FR style by them self with a weird effects. I have now guitar manufactured (UK) LINDO 7-strings (You can find it on KZfaq ass well) and body and neck is "ok" but when we coming to a Floyd parts...lots of problems! MEASUREMENT ARE WRONG!!!

A threadlocker paste like Loctite would work much better than teflon tape, threadlockers are designed for that exact purpose. Teflon is actually a lubricant that is fibrous and formed into a flat tape designed to be wrapped around "pipe thread" (meaning tapered thread, not just the threads of a pipe) for the purpose of lubricating the thread, as pipe thread is tapered and designed to form a mechanical seal when screwed tight, unlike parallel machine threads that don't provide a seal. The teflon tape lubes the pipe thread to allow easier torquing for an even tighter connection thus a stronger mechanical seal which stays in that position. If the threads are turned, If there's any movement, over time the tape will tear apart and it'll look like white hair wrapped around your trem arm bushing. Loctite is invisible compared to the white teflon tape, plus it was designed for the purpose of preventing a threaded fastener from backing out or unscrewing itself loose. It comes in different strengths indicated by its color. The automotive service industry has been applying it to parts for decades as a redundancy or safety feature on fasteners that loosen from a vehicle's vibrations. Permatex Loctite, any AutoZone has small tubes for $4-$5. A drop or two is all you'll need.

How do I get the arm off then?
@alexhenrymanfredi9909
@alexhenrymanfredi9909 3 жыл бұрын
@@5000rgb you simply just back it out. Just because the product is called "Loc Tite" doesn't automatically mean it locks the threads tight.They make many different products and sealers... some WILL lock threads tight enough thhat you'd need tools to get enough leverage to unscrew, but the blue one just gives a little to a lot more resistance depending on how much you use over the number of threads you coat. Many automotive new part bolts have the thread locker already applied to 1/4 or 1/3 of the threads. If you were to use the red formula and cover 100% of the threads it would likely round off the hex head or twist off bolt shank before threads could be broken loose to turn.

@@alexhenrymanfredi9909 I just fixed mine, I found an O-ring works best. Part of the the problem I had was that the screw in the bottom of the cup protruded and made contact with the bottom of the arm, preventing the ferrule on the arm from contacting the top of the coupling. I looked like even with the missing washer it would have been to long. A shorter screw to allow the arm to be fully inserted and an O-ring to stop the retaining nut from loosening and we're good to go. Or just drop a Schaller arm in.

Thanks this is what I was looking for. I didn't receive a bar with my used Ibanez and it's for a threaded bar, I prefer the sleeve and collar style because it feels silly spining the bar into the bridge and it's easier to adjust the resting position (sleeve/collar) of the bar.

I have a MIJ Wolfgang coming in a couple days. I’m so excited! My first Floyd guitar. I played a couple of new EVH Specials and a 5150 in my local shop today and got really nervous when the trem arm had so much play unless it was completely screwed down - which I don’t like. Since the case has that cutout, I’m thinking I’m gonna pick up one of those original arms. Great video!!

Thanks for the tip. I just received a new Jackson model and the tremolo arm bushing was loose. I was hoping I didn't have to remove the FR to fix this, but didn't know it was accessible from the back. All tight now and the bushing has not loosened again. I think a little blue Loc-Tite on that bushing screw might be a good idea if it happens again.

Yes the classic 84 arm. I found out later that the system really makes sense and is not as bulky underneath as the push in unit with its big nut creating clearancd problems with some guitars.

I have a Korean Hamer with a licensed Floyd that had the old style threaded arm. Perhaps the proper adjustment escaped me but when the friction was set right so the bar would stay in place while playing and swing out of the way with a flick of the finger, there was always some takeup as the spring washer compressed. That and having to screw the bar in and out. I bought the style with the regular threaded cap and, maybe I got a good one, the feel was much better. Perhaps I was lucky because I have another Floyd that has the annoying rattle.

old school floyds need a locking nut on the back of the whammy bar pivot.....problem is the thread is some weird thread that doesn't seem to exist anywhere but on that nut? also i remove the bottom teflon washer to increase the grounding and get rid of the static sounds you can get when you move the bar back to it's hanging position when not in use, otherwise the bar really is not grounded to the guitar

Just found out there is a newer version of the push in style. It uses an Allen bolt to put tension on the arm like a gotoh. There is a bushing inside that part the bar goes into and there is no play whatsoever.

It's been a while since I've used an Ibanez. A standard Floyd rose collar/arm does fit the original Edge (on some higher end models), but not most of the other Edges. I can't recall how (or if) you can tighten the holder.

I despise FR trems. They are loose like he's showing and when you tighten them down to keep them tight, they come loose again after just moving the arm once or twice. Hipshot is doing great things with trems.

So are the tolerances closer on the original Floyd rose? I didn't have a problem with a Hamer that I bought for $400. I just bought the JTV-89F for $1200 and I feel like a sucker since the trem is almost unusable for subtle vibrato. The noise of the rattle is actually audible through the amp. Very disappointed especially since I sold the Hamer before the 89-F arrived.

I suppose maybe I'm just lucky: I installed an Ibanez (licenced) Floyd Rose bridge on my Vester Maniac over 20 years ago, and haven't had any problems at all. After all these years, It works like new. (It was expensive - almost as much as the guitar back then - but time tells, it was certainly worth it)

Actually, the floyd on this guitar is a Korean-made "original" floyd. Not the real German-made one. You can tell by the bend in the base plate for the fine tuners and the fact that the trem arm has a longer tension adjusting collar (the part that you screw on the housing). The only issue I've ever had with these trems is the bar, the rest is quite well made. You can replace the housing with one from the original floyd, but you need to widen the hole in the base plate slightly to make it fit.

I don't recall saying this was a German Floyd. I did a complete review of this guitar in an earlier video, where I talk at length about the Korean Floyd. The easiest way to tell is that the saddles of the Korean one have a 45 degree bevel on the back edge. Although I heard that they stopped doing that recently.

I had one of the old style bars with the two washers on an old Kramer (OFR, made in Germany). It would stay tight for maybe ten minutes. Bought a new style Schaller bar and it just stays where you want it. No tape or anything. Could be mine is a lucky one because there's no play anywhere.

Hey, my Westone guitar has a mfg floyd rose license patent trem and I was wondering if the schaller floyd rose arm module would fit my shitty trem...? If not would it be better to just get a whole different arm that'd be able to fit the arm module properly? Orrr should I just upgrade the whole thing to the floyd rose 1000? I'm asking cause my guitar doesn't have the cavity for a normal original floyd rose. It's like a jazz master trem.

What i find hilarious and maybe even ironic is that the guy that designed that Wolfgang and is most known for the floyd rose preferred the trem arm floppy and loose. seriously EVH's trem arm would move about a inch before it even made the trem move! at least his Kramer 5150 guitar was set that way. several people that played it have told this.

I could solve the "loose trem arm" problem for good. There's a "Turbo Trem" arm now offered by Floyd Rose. It has a 3 mm allen head at the end of the arm and can be used to change the strings, unlock the nut, etc etc. It's built right into the arm, so no looking for the allen wrench. So, you just make the receiving assembly with a 3mm square hole to receive the 3 mm allen head on the bar. Tighten down the screw and it become physically impossible for the bar to be loose. A spring could be added so that you can set the level of tension on the bar. Loose tremelo arm problem solved forever.

I highly doubt it, it still has the same pop in and screw with fingers mechanism and every arm that tightens down on a floyd becomes lose very quickly even if you use pliers, this one looks no different to previous ones apart from the hex key built into it. After you lock tighten the bottom end which is a bad design because from factory it sits flush but soon after a few uses the metals naturally expand from use and it becomes no good. It's just another arm they will sell for years until people figure out it's as crap as all the others apart from maybe the original above which I think is the best one.

I don't have any experience with a real Floyd. Some engineer needs to step up to the plate and do a complete redesign. There has to be a way to adjust the swing tension without affecting the play in the arm.

It is NOT easier to just replace your whole Floyd. There is so much mis-information being posted on KZfaq. If you have watched the video and the fixes he is demonstrating do not work for you....then buy a new replacement arm assembly from Floyd Rose. Buy the Original style arm assy. Replace the arm and the nut which holds it. It will cost you 12 dollars. Problem solved.
