I think he wasn't really such a villain, he was just on the opposite side to main characters. His goal was good, he wanted to clear the seas from pirates. And we all know that in real life, pirates wasn't such a "good guys" like Disney shows them in the movies.

KamikazethecatII You are correct. He is not evil. He is just arrogant. The pirates are not heroes as Disney displays them. Blackbeard in the 4th movie was evil, Davy Jones was evil, but not Beckett. Beckett had the right motives.

Davy Jones was not really evil. He's like Gollum, he has a good side. He was just very frustrated when Calypso didn't show up, and let his feelings take the better of him. Blackbeard and Barbossa in the first movie are the only evil characters.

It's frustrating to see the actor - Tom Hollander- being underappreciated in a grand franchise such as PoTC. He was one of the best villains, he didn't have any supernatural effects on his face to make him seem more villainous, he relied on the subtle variations on his facial expressions and range of his acting to see him through. The best example of this is when he's absolutely terrified and panicked at what as happening, beyond his surprise, when he was attacked on both sides.

THANK YOU!!! I know this is a year late, but man, it's good to find someone who also recognises the insane acting talent it took for Tom's character. This main trilogy was one of the most amazing trilogies I ever got to see at the cinema and one of my all time personal favourites.

Yes. Speaking of which, Beckett has some vibes of Hans Landa, since they both are threatening because of the actions that they commit in their perspective films and how they move the plot. Both have a great sense of charisma and charm through their soft spoken manner, but they use them to hide their menace and darkness within, and both have a distinctive branch of clothing that make them ominous.

Do you find him menacing/threatening in some way? If so, then tell me what things make him threatening? Davy Jones and Salazar are menacing and intimidating because of their appearances and abilities, so what does Beckett has?
@bigsai4472
@bigsai4472 3 жыл бұрын
Xavier X it’s the fact that he is a politically powerful human, hence, the title Lord. He’s a nobleman who has control of the British East Indian Trading Company fleet (with multiple 1st-Rate Ships), capable of overpowering even the most powerful pirates. The fact that he has no supernatural powers shows you how much he can do without them. He was close to exterminating the pirates and their collaborators just by practical means, along with Davy Jones’ rather mediocre assistance. Salazar and Jones can’t even set foot on land, their one defect that prevents them from getting to the pirates physically. Beckett has the ability to lead an entire army to march up the shores and crush them. Yes, Shipwreck Cove is a fortress, but that doesn’t mean you need to take it, you could just pummel it until there is nothing and no one left. But the one thing that truly makes him a villain, is that he can make anyone expendable no matter what, with Jones for example. Salazar was unstoppable, but only because he had the compass. Like with Jones’ heart, if Beckett had that compass, Salazar would have no choice but to follow (not necessarily be forced by) Beckett in his mission to eradicate piracy, something Beckett and Salazar have in common. So, it isn’t because of supernatural powers that make Beckett intimidating, it’s his practical and pragmatism that make him intimidating when one thinks about the situations. The only defect to his downfall was that he was put in an unpredictable scenario, when he was the one initially predicting everything and everyone’s moves. However, Sparrow’s unpredictability forced him into a situation in which he was unable to decide, which led to his ultimate demise. But if Beckett had predicted that Jones would have fallen, and Sparrow would not have run away, he would have easily annihilated both Sparrow and Turner with the 114-gun HMS Endeavour against the 32-gun Black Pearl and 40-gun Flying Dutchman.

Cutler Beckett is my favourite kind of villain, even if he’s not utterly a villain, he’s not physically imposing, he could be taken quite easily in a fight, but that’s not what makes him a good villain. Lord Cutler Beckett reminds me of Inspector Javert from Les Miserables. Both characters get too obsessed with the law in a sense that they are cruel and merciless about it. Plus, even if it will take years, they will both never rest until they suceed at capturing and punishing certain lawbreakers, Jack Sparrow and Jean Valjean.

In my opinion, Javert and Beckett are not alike. As you said, Javert is obsessed with the law and it kills him in the end to admit that a criminal can be good (so he jumps into the Seine). That storyline marked me very much as a kid. I think I genuinely felt sorry for him. Now, Beckett's death really made a great impression on me as well. I remember thinking it was the coolest scene of the trilogy by far! And even though I despised his character, I was rooting for him to be alive! Anyway, I think he's a great character, but he was obsessed by success, not law. Javert never twisted law, not until the end when he refuses to seek out and arrest Jean Valjean. Beckett on the other hand was sly and never rightful. He was elegant, smart and full of pride. He was on the dark side of the law if I might say. Nice topic :)

@@prithvirajbasu4196 In normal circumstances Beckett would’ve but he’s facing a supernatural ship that is no longer under his influence as it is taken over by one of his enemies following the death of his “ally”, Davy jones. Not to mention, the black Pearl is under protection of the Dutchman so raining hell on it won’t do much damage. Beckett realized the moment the Dutchman turned against him it’s his calling to the afterlife, opening fire will only prolong the inevitable and being a high class man he chooses to go down a respectable gentleman rather than being salty of his defeat.

Becket didn't give orders to fire because he instantly realized what happened - that Davy Johns was gone and that it was done by the reason of William Turner being killed and revived as a new captain of a Dutchman (he knew well what was the only way it could happen), and that William's and Elisabeth's love have won over all odds, - destiny itself being against their foes, - and that this power of love was the ultimate force in the Universe and it made Dutchman and Pearl come as one to attack the West Indie's fleet with total disregard about their lives. Because he was stunned by the power of this love, he felt that he can not go against it and destroy it with his canons any more. He suddenly become a man of heart. This can be even specifically seen on his facial expression at that moment - that he was deeply touched and stunned by that sacrificial love between William and Elisabeth and also readiness of their crew members to fight with them till the end. That's why he decided not to act but give in. And that's also why he said it was "a good business". That's the only secret about it, kids.

I honestly think Lord Beckett was based on Napoleon Bonapart, he was a good leader and was able to conquer the sea very easily, just like Napoleon was able to conquer Europe, but he got too obsessed with the power and eventually got himself killed...and his height😁

There is much as well of the portuguese Marquis of Pombal. Both Beckett and Pombal can be described as "enlightened absolutists", both tried to make the colonial machine work as it should be, and both were obsessed with exterminate the main obstacles for their plans (pirates and jesuits)

In a real battle the Daunted would have defeated both the Pearl and the Flying Dutch Man. Is more war prepare and 3 times as many cannons. A single broad side attack at that range would have decimated the smaller pirate ships.
