The costume drama series, Downton Abbey, written and created by Oscar-winning writer Julian Fellowes, stars Academy Award-winner Maggie Smith as a Dowager Countess of an Edwardian English country house in 1912. The series portrays the lives of the Crawley family and the servants who work for them, in a time before the last vestige of a century’s old tradition were stripped away by World War and the modern age. The all-star cast also includes Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern.

Robert really lucked out with Cora. For all the shade she endured about being American, I think being so served her well in navigating all the drama & arrogance of aristocratic life. She remained grounded & practical-not absolutely always because no one is perfect-but when crisises arose, she handled them pretty well. And at least better than Robert who tended to whine & fluster easily. It wasn't just her money that shored up Downton, it was her character, too!

Yes, she could be naive about people (O’Brien and others) but she did have a quiet, resolute strength.

Cora was too nice about Robert's irresponsible managing of her fortune. I wouldn't have been as understanding.

Cora cared the least about moving out of Downton Abbey. Anyway, if they moved to Downton House, they’d still live a fairly high class life except it’d be much smaller of course.

Yes, it got my waterworks going. Parents and grandparents who've lost a child know that grief.

Even after all these years, when Cora starts crying I start to cry. She plays grief so convincingly I really feel like I'm watching someone mourn their child.

Not a huge fan of Robert but the moment he turned to Bates crying is devastating. Shattered my heart about 2 years ago when I watched it the first time, shatters my heart still. Also, thanks for making me cry over Sybil AGAIN😭😭😭

In real life, Hugh Bonneville broke Richard E. Grant's ribs. When they are rolling around on the floor you can hear Simon Bricker's ribs go cronch

I know this video is about Robert and Cora, but I love love love the moment at 00:44, when Mary looks at Edith and you see the fear in both of their faces - they’re so often at odds but at that moment they’re so worried and afraid for their beloved father. It probably brought back the pain of Sybil as well. They lost her, and now they could lose him… 💔

The last one just goes to show the Dowager does in fact believe what she told Lady Rosamund that heart does not solely exist for the purpose of pumping blood.

I love Robert (and Cora of course). I'm aware of all his weaknesses, he not the most brilliant, makes a lot of mistakes, but... he admits it. He was raised as a perfect aristocratic and dominating gentleman by a mother being.... Violet !! He tries to stay straight and being a good man in a world that is no more the world he was made for. He didn't choose his wife but loves her, and, most important, he respects her, supports her even in her modern choices, determination and leadership. He regognizes faults and accept reproaches. And so does he goes with his daughters, his farm. His mind is often narrow, but because his heart stay largely open to the persons he loves, he finally changes. This may be difficult and he never loose his chivalry spirit in it.

Cora and Robert were a love match. Cora is so wonderful. Only time she was tough was when they lost Sybil. That was a challenge for any parent. They made it through. Also Robert is so kind too. Wonderful that they got together. We hear about the sad marriages of women mostly forced to marry into the Aristocracy and into the British Aristocracy would be the top for American elite old money and new money. There were love matches too. We do not hear about them. You can see it in the Buchaneers of Edith Whartons depictions that were successful and one that were not especially British wealthy who were not aristocrats marry rich Americans usually were the best. Aristocrats are more challenging even for British moving up as well. Middle Class who are mainly Upper middle class or wealthy not of the Aristocratic world copies the Upper Class Aristocratic life but it was much easier to marry into them. Most Aristocrats did not marry for love at all but it can be nice especially coming from the same world. Usually easier for men that if they are not in love, in time they would have a mistress. Women mostly were busy with their children and their busy life but sadly marrying their children the same way that look good on paper but love it not a requirement. Their children usually obeyed They did that up to the 70s and 80s with people we know well in history at that time period doing what they were told to marry even if they were not in love but an eligible match. They still do that in many countries but thankfully not in Western Countries today. We have choices. British and Americans culturally have love matches. I know so many. They all say many Americans are open, caring, outgoing and full of feeling that the British and Irish born and raised that are drawn to Americans. Usually now they move here and they integrate faster than any group in the world besides the language. Usually they move here but a few go there like in this case like Cora and Robert but others love British history and culture historic anyway. Usually not the modern culture. The reason I worked there 10 summers and lived there 4 years with so many vacations seeing almost every county.
