Lord Jamar Gets Angry at Vlad Calling Cosby Show's Geoffrey Owens a Failure (Part 12)

In this clip, Lord Jamar and Godfrey cover a lot of ground on topics ranging from Bill Cosby, Geoffrey Owens, institutional racism, and the wealth gap. The pair also offered up a few bits of friendly criticism for Vlad in terms of his "Republican"-tinged financial commentary. Lord Jamar urged Vlad to stop oversimplifying the financial system, particularly as it pertains to people of color. Lord Jamar and Godfrey both pointed out the systemic barriers that stymie the accumulation of wealth for people of color and how being a white person with money can disable one from looking at the current financial situation with any nuance.

Calling that man a failure is one of the many reasons I have very little respect for Mr. Lyubovny. Anyone who is willing to show up and work for a living, whether they are a brain surgeon, or stocking shelves at a grocery store, deserves some respect. Lyubovny does not know what has happened in that man’s life, and has no idea what is going on his life right now, and has the nerve to call him a failure based on where he works. Lyubovny is a dirtbag.

Lord Jamar made the best point of the video. Hard work does mean you’re going to make the most money. It only means your body is going to break down sooner and you going to get burned out sooner too. I have a degree in Accounting, one of my teachers (Mr. Stark, the teacher that taught my Accounting classes), told me something that had always stuck with me. He said, “Don’t work, hard work smart”. That’s how you really get ahead. Don’t get me wrong, You’re always going to have to work for what you want. You’re always going to have to busy your butt to succeed. But if you’re working two garbage jobs and barely have the time to wipe your butt in the morning, then you’re never really going to get ahead.

@andrewjenkinson8948
@andrewjenkinson8948 5 жыл бұрын
I agree, but Jamar is way to cavalier with his observations too. Making an observation that white people in general are beneficiaries of the American economic system is entirely ignorant to the significant number of white people who are financially insecure. The US capitalist model favours the super-wealthy, a group to which most white people (and most people period) aren't members.
@andrewjenkinson8948
@andrewjenkinson8948 5 жыл бұрын
D'Mario 2000 - I agree, and statistically if you're born white you're much more likely to be born into a position of economic privilege superior to if you were born black. But the point being that most white people, even ones ostensibly doing financially okay, are usually only a paycheck or two away from not being able to pay the rent or the mortgage. That proportion of white people vastly outnumbers the proportion who are financially stable in the long-term. That's why I find the US capitalist system so flawed, in that it's not even that beneficial to people making a decent living - let alone those born into poverty. And questioning people born into poverty (like Vlad appears to do) for not improving their economic situation is absolutely ignorant of the system. I don't often agree with Jamar, but he's right - that's rich Republican-bubble talk.

Yep. And I remember one time I believed in Middle School my daughter came home and said she wanted to give this way boy her Michael Jordan backpack because he live with his grandparents and they live on a fixed income so I said no we will just buy him a new one and you can take it to school and give it to him. Also touching some kids bully other kids the folk you go home and commit suicide don't listen nobody who talks different don't start making fun of people because of the kids are making fun of them or when we go to the store be respectful to homeless people too. I told them when they was young some adults they look like little kids so don't make fun of them. If you don't have nothing good to say about somebody don't say it at all. Now I'm a grown up if a man or a woman come to me and ask me do you really like me I will tell them yes or no and I will tell you why but I'm not going to just walk them to somebody and burnout mean things.

What Lord Jamar said was on point. The thing that Vlad seems to not get about the whole Geoffrey Owens situation is that Owens decided to work an honest job instead of going down the wrong path and taking the quick and easy path by selling drugs or robbing people to make money. I would also like to point out that just because Owens was working at a Trader Joe's doesn't necessarily mean that he was broke or hurting for money. There are a lot of undercover rich people who will take a low paying job in order to stay busy,out of the sheer enjoyment of working,in order to earn a little extra cash,or to give the illusion that they are poor or lower middle class. Hell, Owqens has even stated that he wasn't hurting for money. And I say all of this with the full understanding of Vlad's overall point.

Donald Trump was worth a million dollars at the age of 17; now that he’s in his 70s, he’s worth half a billion. Trump was born into wealth and privilege. Now when it comes to Geoffrey Owens, I don’t know what happened to put him in the situation that led him to working in Trader Joe’s. But what I know for sure is that every one is different when it comes to finances. So you shouldn’t talk poorly about anyone who’s broke, or praise anyone who’s rich.

I think Trump is worth 3 or 4 Billion, not half a million. So whether you like Trump or not, he is a good businessman. Taking 1 million or even 10 million from his Dad and growing it into a 4 Billion Dollar Empire with hotels and buildings all over the world is being business savvy and financially successful. Now, that being said, does his or anyone’s accumulated wealth define their worth as a person? No.
@zokotuckikazu3239
@zokotuckikazu3239 5 жыл бұрын
soul76can You know, he hasn’t paid taxes in 20 years and he’s filed bankruptcy multiple times. A lot of the golf courses, hotels, resorts and casinos he’s built over the years have failed. He’s also in collusion with the Russian Mafia to help them launder their money through his casinos. You might want to reconsider thinking he’s a great business man.
@zokotuckikazu3239
@zokotuckikazu3239 5 жыл бұрын
Gard Grady So his father made a Billion Dollars and gave about 400 million to Donald. The rest was given to the other Trump family members. Donald says he’s worth 10 billion, but his actual bet worth is around 2.5 to 3.5 billion if you look at his business ventures. On an individual level, however, he’s still worth 400 million or so. That’s his personal wealth, not his business wealth. His 2 to 3 billion net worth is tied up in his business.

@@MultiKonrad100 good point. No matter what race you are, what race you are thinking about...if you think they ALL think/talk/do certain things because of their race...is racist. So both sides of view are racist here. To dismiss everything Americans of African descent have been through is egregious. But there are many examples of cultures that have been systematically oppressed and have found a way to overcome. To overlook historical examples of that would only serve to perpetuate the oppression. Malcolm X had the right idea.

I noticed that about Vlad too. When he says it's better to rent a house then buy one, I bought into it. However, it was only until his second interview with Jay Williams that the latter reminded me I'm Black; Vlad has the privilege of renting anywhere as he's white; he isn't worried about *gentrification*- but it's a very real concern for Black people. I wanted to say 'white privilege' would be the better phrase to describe his views rather than racist, as his background may make him oblivious to others experiences, the same way we may not realize what others go through as we aren't the same race, gender, religion etc as them. But as you said, he decided to deflect rather than acknowledge this inequality when Lord Jamar explained it to him.

If everyone was a millionaire you wouldn’t be able to buy anything. Because people would have money and people wouldn’t sell anything because they don’t need the money.

Another thing Vlad doesn't seem to comprehend is that: The past injustices that have deterred African people's progress, still exist today, in varying guises. They are institutional not coincidental.

Paul Judkins African people didn’t arrive. We were brought here, enslaved in one form after another. Every time we were successful or had “too much power”, it was shut down by the government. Is some of our issues are own fault, yes. But please don’t dismiss everything that has been done to keep us in “our” place.

@Butter Brickle Here are a few instances of "so - called oppression that Blacks face" : 1. Discrimination in the Workforce: African Americans are the last hired and first fired. Sept. 2017 comparative analysis research conducted conjunctively by Northwestern University, Harvard University and The Institute for Social Research concluded that "On average, white job applicants receive 36% more call backs than EQUALLY QUALIFIED African Americans." African Americans also suffer higher rates of denial for promotions, advancements and opportunities for vertical mobility within companies based on similar work history, experience and tenure. 2. Discrimination in Wages & Salaries: African American men receive only 69.7% of the wages of white American men for performing the EXACT SAME tasks, job descriptions and work performances; African American women receive only 60.8% of wages for the same. (Feb. 2019 Study: U. S. Census Bureau and the Economic Policy Institute). 3. Discrimination in the Criminal Justice System: African Americans receive higher incarceration rates (SIX TIMES that of whites) and serve longer/harsher sentences (20% longer) than whites and receive higher bail and bonds requests for similar infractions based upon the individuals history and record. (April 2019, The Sentencing Project/United Nations study; June 2018, Legal Aid Society, Case Studies). 4. Discrimination in the Healthcare Industry: A Nov. 2019 study by JAMA (the Journal of the American Medical Association), reports that in predominantly African American neighborhoods, response times by EMS personnel is 10% slower than in predominately white neighborhoods, there are lower hospital and physician recommendations for testing, preventative care, intensive care and surgical procedures, resulting in higher rates of preventable deaths. 5. Discrimination in the Finance Industry: A Feb. 2020 report by the Borrower Protection Center reveals that African Americans incur higher personal and business loan rejection rates and 10.5% higher interest rates on approved loans based on similar income, credit history and net worth as whites. ...con't...

@Butter Brickle...Con't: 6. Discrimination by Law Enforcement: As reported in an Aug. 2019 study conducted by The Proceedings of the National Academies of Science: African Americans endure more cases of assaults, abuse and nearly THREE TIMES AS HIGH death rates, per capita, at the hands of law enforcement. 7. Discrimination in Housing: A Nov. 2019 study by the University of California - Berkeley reveals that African Americans suffer higher mortgage application rejection rates, are charged exponentially excessive finance fees and interest rates on approved mortgages (also known as Predatory Loans), for similarly valued homes and neighborhoods, endure higher rates of denial for rental applications based on similar income, credit history and background as whites and are subject to higher rates of illegal redlining: intentional herding of prospective renters and home owners into substandard housing and segregated areas by realestate agents and brokers, BASED SOLELY ON RACE. 8. Discrimination in the Educational System: March 2018 data released by the U. S. Dept. of Education Office of Civil Rights shows that predominantly African American schools are allocated fewer dollars per student and African American students, in general, are subject to THREE TIMES HIGHER rates of suspension, expelling and assignment to special education programs as whites, for similarly perceived offenses. 9. Discrimination in the Retail Industry: Research conducted by The Boston Consulting Group concluded that inner city shoppers pay up to 40% higher prices for the EXACT SAME name brands and in many cases, inferior products and produce than other neighborhoods. 10. Environmental Discrimination: A Feb. 2016 study published jointly in the Environmental Research Letters periodical by the State University of New York College of Environmental Sciences and Forestry and the University of Maryland, culled from data supplied by the Environmental Protection Agency and the U. S. Census Bureau, reported that urban, minority neighborhoods are extensively and intentionally subject to "Environmental Racism": Targeted as the location for the vast majority of facilities that deploy toxic substances, are home to more hazardous waste treatment, storage and disposal plants, cancerous causing power grids and substandard water filtration systems. These are simply a small sample of routine racial injustices confronted by African Americans. There are many more. If you'd like access to additional cases to apply toward your edification, let me know, I possess volumes. As it were, the names and dates of these featured cases have been provided for your independent verification. Feel free to do so. And remember: Research and information are the panacea for ignorance and supposition.
