In 1999, Steve Kroft profiled Robert Gardiner, an 88-year-old aristocrat in the Hamptons, who was one of the most eccentric people ever to appear on 60 Minutes. In 2011, producer Frank Devine described why the story was one of his favorites.
"60 Minutes" is the most successful television broadcast in history. Offering hard-hitting investigative reports, interviews, feature segments and profiles of people in the news, the broadcast began in 1968 and is still a hit, over 50 seasons later, regularly making Nielsen's Top 10.

Looks like he passed in 2004 and they inherited the entire island. No developments yet - the niece is a forester enthusiast.

Thank you for that information. I am glad the island wasn't sold to greedy, frothing developers. Wouldn't it be a slice of Heaven to own the island and be at peace during the summer months.

I grew up on eastern Long Island. When I was young, my parents had the opportunity to visit Gardiner's Island. (Gardiner had been asked to run for office, and he invited a group from that party to see the Manor and Island.) They were shown around by Robert David Lion Gardiner himself. I didn't get to go because he didn't want kids under a certain age there (12 when I was 11, or 14 when I was 13). I was a mature and quiet kid, but we played by the rules....only to find out that one of the other guests had brought a kid younger than me. My mother was pretty mad about that, and I have been sorry for over 50 years that I missed out on a unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Favorite tidbit from the visit: Gardiner and his sister were at odds with each other, but each had rites to the house. There was a single coveted dining room that each claimed for their own. Solution: Split it right down the middle, visually, with each half being decorated differently, from the walls and furnishings right down to the table settings and decor.

Where is the follow up? This was done in 1999 when Robert was 88 years old. Obviously he has died in the 25 years since. When his relatives got a hold of the island, did thy develop it or just turn it into their own private retreat?

Given his niece was a professional forest conservator, and her then husband the (now) late Robert Goelet was a past President of New York Historical Society, President of Museum of Natural History, President of Wildlife Conservation Society, I don’t think developing it into housing estates was likely top of their agendas… All very Bleak House…

@@markw999 I’m assuming they figured that just waiting out his demise and getting 100% ownership under the terms of the trust, by not agreeing to legally binding covenants then they maximised their future tax write downs. So yes, greed definitely paid a part, but not with the intention of stuffing up the island, but maximising their tax benefits for future generational wealth increase. The island is obviously land tax exempt, but by not being “protected” will still count as “worth” a billion plus as a tax write down against any other “bad” (for them) tax positions they may want to unwind in the future.

🤦he absolutely does not sound like a nineteenth century aristocrat! He doesn't even sound English! Of course he sounds American, being one and why they put up with his rudeness is quite beyond me. Being the heir to such a fortune obviously meant that people spoiled him, but he's playing up to it too. The voice over is extremely irritating, why can't they let the man speak for himself instead of interpreting him for us. Did Gardner really admit to having 'screaming matches ' with his family?

God loves you and takes care of you so that this message reaches you. God is the one who created this great universe and has complete control over it. And the greatest loss that a person loses in this life is that he lives while he does not know God who created him, knowing the Messenger of Muhammad, the last of the messengers, and the Islamic religion, the last of the heavenly religions. The great intelligence, before you believe in something or not, is to read it, study it, and understand it well, and then you have the choice to believe in it or not. I advise you on this now before you do not have time to do that.
