@@kazuhachi952 this may very well have saved their plan in a way. Because Sauron also saw Aragorn since he ripped it out of Pippin’s hands, that led Sauron to falsely believe that Aragorn plans to use the ring against him, which is why he fell for the trap at the Black Gate, cuz he thought the ring was influencing Aragorn into believing he could win an impossible battle.

@@thenethralking6032 sauron perceived that Gandalf Aragon or Denethor would try to use the ring against him. He also knew the ring was with a baggins, a hobbit that the ringwraiths spotted outside of the shire. This made a perfect trap for gandalf to use. Sauron wasn't specific about details (knowing of the fellowship and difference between the hobbits) so he fell for it.

Calculated or not (and I think not), what he did was to draw Sauron out, make him fast-forward his plans and attack before he was really prepared. That was all the difference. That, and Aragorn then wresting the palantir away from Sauron blew the doors off. Sauron would have crushed Gondor had this taken but a few more weeks… the Corsairs would have not been defeated as Aragorn would not have taken the Paths of the Dead, the Rohirrim would not have been mustered, etc. Definitely a happy accident.

Not necessarily. I think as you do, but also Denethor's mind was ravaged by the stuff he saw in the Palantir a long while ago. That's why he's such a dick towards Faramir and Gandalf. He was just screwed and lost his mind. In the books, he's described before that as a noble and great Sire.

Another important point to add, Gondor wasn't anymore peaceful at the time either. Having to defend Osgiliath and Ithilien against Sauron's attacks at the time. Even if they wanted to help, their forces were tied down in these perpetual battles, so there was not much they could have done to aid Theoden

And Elves can also march at night if they want to. They don't tire

In the books Gondor is in a constant state of war at almost all fronts this time, they can barely hold onto their own territory let alone spare a army to save Rohan. They also knew that Rohan was in trouble but didn't know any details or that they were on the verge of defeat at the Hornburg.

Swings and roundabouts and all that. Jackson didn't care for Eomer much, while Tolkien didn't think much of Boromir, yet the films gave him a much better arc than he had in the books.
