Ah, the memories! I saw this musical several times in London (2007 - 2008). Epic production. This show had everything. Spoken dialogue, songs, dancing, acrobatics (people walking on stilts, doing backflips, etc), stage combat, aerial acrobatics (many different sorts), visual illusions, disappearing acts, magic tricks (sleight of hand), audience interaction. The stage was massive. A huge revolving mechanism that keeps moving (spinning, rising, falling, changing shape) while the actors are walking on it. Lots of special effects were used during the show. Lights, projections, sound effects, smoke machines, confetti cannons, industrial fans (big ones, like 7 foot diameter), and many other things. The music was unusual but very beautiful. The composers were English, Indian, and Finnish. Middle Earth meets Bollywood meets Kalevala. The actors were a mixed bunch. Some of them were excellent in their roles (Laura Michelle Kelly, Michael Therriault, Peter Howe), others were good, some were okay, some were hilariously miscast (not naming any names here... hahaha!). Many of the ensemble actors were skilled acrobats. I would have to write a 3000 word essay to describe what it felt like to watch this show! If someone asks for a short recap I will say: J.R.R. Tolkien book turned into a West End musical with Cirque du Soleil acrobatics and David Copperfield illusions.

Seen most every musical going in London over the past few years and this one has beat them all hands down. I'd say only Wicked comes close. I got it to see it only once right before it ended, I was gutted as I'd have gone back so many times. It really feels like their marketing team failed them the most, it was cancelled due to lack of ticket sales and yet every person I mention this to has never heard of it (and would have instantly gone and seen it). I myself only found out by chance when browsing some last minute theatre tickets. A real shame it cancelled and that the planned world tour never happened.
@kfor474 жыл бұрын
I saw the London production several times (over a period of 10 months) and it was massive. I seriously doubt they could make it a touring version without having to scale it down. If you try to scale it down, you will ruin the magic. Theatre Royal Drury Lane was almost too SMALL for this show. This show requires a massive stage (very wide and very deep), plenty of space above the stage (aerial acrobatics), plenty of space under the stage (revolving mechanism with lifts), a large orchestral pit, and plenty of space backstage (huge ensemble cast, tons of costumes). Not to mention the lights, special effects, and the endless technical rehearsals. This show is a dream to watch but an absolute nightmare to take on tour. You could do a very, very slow tour. The show arrives in town, takes over an entire theatre (minimum of 2,000 seats) and plays for 6 months straight before moving on. But I don't see how they could make a fast or even a semi-fast touring version. It is possible technically, but you would break the bank. Or you would have to make changes to the show (scale it down considerably) and that would break the illusion. I guess the reason why this show is NOT on tour is because the producers know what they're dealing with. They don't want to break the bank and don't want to break the illusion. If I were to see a scaled-down version of this show, I'd be disappointed. "Come on, put some effort into it! What? You think this touring version is awesome? Pffft. You should have seen the London version. You don't know, man! You weren't there!"

Psyche Li honey love, i'm american born-and-bred. i basically shit stars and stripes out my asshole. so i'm confused; which part of my comment gave you the impression that i'm non-native? the misplaced period, which is clearly meant to denote emphasis in this non-formal setting? we are on the internet. i was speaking colloquially. something a non-native speaker would be more likely have trouble with, i should note. and no offense, but your own stilted syntax hardly gives one confidence in your judgment vis-a-vis linguistics. #justsaying
@psycheli67019 жыл бұрын
tiffany aching U're right, I myself is not a "native", with English is not even my 2nd language. So I didn't mean to offend, AT ALL ( I've no idea if "non-native" means sth. humiliating to real natives. In my culture "sounds non-native" or "translatorese" only infers one has been reading too much in foreign language so the mother tongue gets influenced somehow). BTW I do know a non-native musical fan elsewhere whose name is A_Tiffany_A... Moreover, the way you expressed "my life is now complete" in the very end of sentences with an m in lower case is kind of common among my local fan girls, and thus I was just wondering if I came across a Lotr musical fan of them (which is quite rare). And now I learn the expression is far from regionally typical. Thanx. Sorry if you feel anything uncomfortable. Guess I was overly excited and arrogant.
@puellamagica33599 жыл бұрын
Psyche Li i understand that you were excited and maybe thought i was your friend, but it's kind of rude to go up to random people and be like, "YO! you have an accent." (which i don't even have!) as an asian-american, the number of times i've been other-ed and exoticized by non-asians is frankly staggering, and automatically puts me on the defensive when it comes to conversations like this. i accept your apology, and hope you'll be more careful in future. i apologize myself for being too harsh in my reply. (btw, it's quite common among american internet users to type exclusively in lowercase. just letting you know. furthermore, the phrase "my life is complete" is actually grammatically correct, while "my life is completed" is never used. it isn't just a regional thing, it's actually the correct way to say it.)

the 9-minute track shown here consists of fragments of the entire musical. The recording is professional with great sound. So why was the recording of this musical not released on dvd / Blu-ray? there are many examples of stage musicals that have been published. It's hard to believe that so far no unofficial version (bootleg) has hit the network is a pity. I don't care about critics' reviews, as a LOTR fan I would like to have a chance to see it ...

I was just looking up this show after seeing the viral video with the guy on stilts in his terrifying Halloween costume, and remembered that when I saw LOTR The Musical live in London many years ago, that the LOTR horses were very similar to his stilts costume. This musical was one of the most amazing things that I have ever seen in life, and an experience that I will never forget. The songs were ok, but everything else was out of this world, and when the entire theater was engulfed in this blowing black crepe confetti with wind machines working full force to emulate the ash from Mordor, it was like you were there with Frodo. If this play ever comes back and you are a LOTR fan, you need to fly in from where ever you may be in the world to see this play live.

I’ve heard it was due to liability problems with the danger levels of certain stunts, they had a chorus member sustain a traumatic injury with part of the moving stage. They're not making a musical based on the movies, they're making a musical based on the books. And comparing a musical/theatrepiece with a movie is like compairing dogs with cats

the musical has the epic element that the films failed to capture, when I heard that the Fellowship was coming this is what I expected all those years ago. I must find a live recording of this play, it surpasses 'Cats' by leagues.

I don't care if critics panned this musical to the point where it never saw West End again or even made it to Broadway. This musical is up there with the Book of Mormon and The Lion King as one of my favourites. It's full of magic that has encouraged me to travel the world and value friendship and love. Seeing this musical back in 2007 when it was active was the gift of a lifetime. RIP LOTR!

Saw it 5 times in London it was brilliant. Haven't seen a show that comes close to the stage effects. Pity it bombed in London
