Seeing Peregrin made me realized Rosie cotton wasnt mentioned and is part of a fairy easy to put together 2 card combo and likely better than that card. infinite with Herd Baloth and Scurry Oak (baloth likely costs to much and just not as easy to snag but exsists) Thought likely in the same deck

There is kind of a "The Ring Tempts you deck", at least in Gladiator, but it's using the fact the ringbearer becomes legendary to loop Ratadrabik of Urborg and the ETB/dies/sac tempters. In a similar vein, Rosie Cotton of South Lane is another creature that goes infinite with Scurry Oak, it really felt like half of the cards in Abzan colours in this set were just cards for niche creature combo decks.

I just want to add onto the discussion of Stern Scolding that it hits everything Cut down hits (as the "biggest" things cut down can kill is a 2/3, 3/2, 4/1 or 0/5 all of which this hits) and more cause it can counter things like ball lightning, and we've seen cut down be played a couple of times on North 100 Showdown.

I am over the moon that Forge Anew makes it into Canlander. It's by far the coolest card in the set for me. Shout out RW equipment. Best deck in the format!

When I was thinking about big red the X spell from this set that interested me was not spiteful banditry but "Fear, Fire, Foes!". An earth shock that kills pro red x/1s (mostly forge-tender tbh) with the option of fire balling a creature seems like the modal spell to deal with aggro and control. On a note of cards that probably are not good but have weird interactions, display of power does weird stuff with storm and is a modal counter spell / double up that can do both in the right situation. People were thinking about tibalts trickery back in kaldheim so whenever a red counter spell lookalike shows up I get modestly hopeful but it is no reprieve or mana tithe, I know.

Was just thinking about this! Glad to watch it while relaxing after work. Also I like you guys highlighting cards that maybe aren't total slam dunks power-wise but are interesting tools or point towards new archetypes!

For Boromir you mention it helping vs Storm, but I don't think it works there since Storm copies rather than casting. On the other hand it does help vs a lot of random stuff - cascade, rebound, suspend, battles, alternate costs like Force and evoked Solitude and such, and I guess moxes if that's relevant after you play a 3 drop. Situational ability but sometimes it'll make your opponent real sad.

I'm hoping you include Samwise Gamgee in the next episode. Together with cauldron familiar and a sac outlet, you have a very clean protean hulk pile with 1-2 extra mana avaliable for sylvan safekeeper or other protection pieces. Also, Gollum, Patient Plotter is a sac outlet you can entomb for.

Hi gang. I live in Vancouver. I've only played Canadian Highlander once with a borrowed deck in an event where I went 0-4. I don't play Canadian Highlander. I've watched every North 100 set review for the last 3 years. I watch North 100 only because it's interesting and because Ben Wheeler is endlessly entertaining (and handsome).

Will we see a "2022 Championship Analysis" episode, perhaps introducing Trenton McIntyre as a new co-host? ;) Also, I want to see someone try Gollum in Esper Initiative Blink. Like you said, all the initiative creatures have bad stats, so giving them Skulk would make it easier to steal back the Initiative. With blink effects, you might even get your ring emblem up to something more dangerous. Are there better options? Probably. Would it be fun? I think so. :D

I think a good way to think about Stern Scolding hits is that it hits everything fatal push would hit and a bit more (since it hits 2/4, 4/2 and larger creatures that have one small stat).

I wonder if, in that magical 4-color no-white tokens deck Serge spent the end of the episode talking about, if Jolene the Plunder Queen from the SNC Commander decks would make that cut. Double Treasure generation and give a payoff of "make this creature big if you have nothing to spend Treasures on"? It's a four-drop with no intrinsic evasion though so that might neuter it

On the topic of the artifact token list: Temur (RUG) colors, dragonstorm for the dragon that wins the game with 20+ artifacts. Is it bad? Yes, but that can be the baseline to beat (with sufficient mana, alchemist's refuge is on color)

This may be on me since I don't have experience playing a format with Karakas, but I think Lost to Legend (WW | Instant | Put target nonland historic permanent into its owner's deck fourth from the top.) seems pretty strong. Tucking Legendaries - including Planeswalkers - for just 2 mana seems like solid removal in a deck that can get the two white pips.

Thoughts on Fear! Fire! Foes!? Doesn't seem hard to get 2 cards out of it, and post combat it can do a lot more. Plus it kills TNN, which is sometimes still a card people play.

As someone who plays 4c artifact tokens in gladiator, you absolutely want red in the deck. Ragavan, fable of the mirror breaker, bloodtithe harvester. Those are all very strong midrange cards that incidentally make artifact tokens, and then you get to run the engine cards like oni-cult anvil, breya’s apprentice, and sokenzan smelter.

It might just be barely short, but it feels like White should provided something, since it has so many effects that care about tokens, artifacts, and things that generate food, clues, servos, phyrexian mites etc.

The way * is counted is different than X in other zones, goyf does check card types to set its P/T even when its in your hand or deck or graveyard, etc. It's a weird rule.

I imagine since you have to hold up 3 mana, plus it is very specific in what it can target, both in terms of timing and where the dead creature comes from. She can't hit a reanimation target that the opponent discarded from their hand, which is usually what you'd want from an effect like hers.

Yes, kind of, you get 1, and then you get another 1, so overall, you get 2 cards, but in increments of 1. That difference can sometimes be relevant.

For Highlander it's probably just both slow and winmore, as you have to have a board presence for it to do anything, and it takes awhile to actually give any value.

The format has plenty of ways to get card advantage that don't take jumping through two hoops (playing a bad cantrip/discarding it and _then_ finding a way to scry) Maybe if there's a deck that already finds itself going through those hoops constantly, but I've never heard of it.

While I agree that bowmasters is better in more formats, just going off price isn't really the best evidence to rely on, as one is a Common and the other is a Rare. $1.50 for a common is still really high.

What I really dislike is the random grey triangle that now has to be on the commons and uncommons to show they are universes beyond… It looks so unorganic. It’s such an unappealing thing to see. I feel like better more appealing method was needed. Even the borderless cards have it, and it is so ugly and just ruins the cards for me. It draws my eyes away from the gorgeous artwork that artists have created ㅠㅠ
