Once more unto the lore! Today I talk of the military might of Gondor, the Fiefdom of Dol Amroth. There is also a brief talk about the other Fiefs but there is little that we know of them.

one of my favorite quotes from Lord of the Rings is about Imrahil, Aragorn and Eomer I believe it says something like "None of the three were touched by battle such was their fate and skill in battle." I am sure I butchered that quote, but it is close.

Just another example of how awesome Prince Imrahil was. I talked my friend's ears off on the way to the cinema to watch Return of the King about how Imrahil was my favourite character from the books and I couldn't wait to see him. Then after we came out of the screening they asked me which one he was, and I just sighed. I'm still sad that I never got to see Imrahil and his Swan Knights on the big screen.
@gregorymacdonnell79146 жыл бұрын
+ James Bennett Wow,I totally forgot about Prince Imrahil and his Swan Knights! Yeah !! You are not far from the exact quote,alas my books are not next to the computer. Without Imrahil, the fighting might have gone in a different direction. The "Dead warriors of the Mountain" are also a HUGE number of ghost like warriors,fulfilling their oath finally by helping Aragorn,as the "King" that he was to become. I remember the thrill I felt as I read them jumping to the ground and fighting ...."these three were unscathed,for such was their fortune, and the skill and might of their arms,and few indeed dared to abide them or to look upon their faces in the hour of their wrath" The three ,Imrahil,Eomer and Aragorn. Indeed Imrahil was in charge of the city while the fighting continued.

An excellent video, an issue which has always interested me is the extremely low population levels which seem to exist all throughout Middle Earth, Gondor for example seems to have very few people based on its land area, if Gondor is representative of a late Dark Ages society, not a more advanced one as Gondor appears to be, one would still expect it to contain just based off the size of its eastern parts at least 4 - 4.5 million people, and presumably be able to field larger armies then what we see in a war of national existence, for that is what the War of the Ring was, defeat would have meant the utter annihilation of the civilisational, cultural and perhaps racial heritage of Gondor.
@matthiuskoenig33785 жыл бұрын
Gondor has been depopulated after millennium of wars and plagues, remember they have been fighting the orcs basically non-stop for a thousand years which combined with plagues...

The principal failing of the movies centered on the poor portrayal of Denethor (way too creepy, not at all the mastermind that had engineered a very protracted campaign to preserve Gondor over decades), of Theoden (also too weak following his recovery - more to do with his move to turtle up at Helm's deep seeming foolish when it wasn't at all in the book - leading the to the stupid need for Elves to help, and rendering Theoden a much weaker foil for comparison with Aragorn, and the silly use of the army of the dead vs. simply a force from the south raised by Aragorn). Cinema. Otherwise they were great! (please pardon my venting - your mention of Denethor brought it on). Great work Arachir! JW

Sindar blamed the wars with Morgoth on the Noldor who wanted to reclaim the Similrils of Feanor. So a blame game is going on,Silvan elves blame the Sindar and they blame the Noldor and they blame the Valar lol. Teleri were the sea elves a branch of Sindar. So are the Falathrum. Edhellond was an Silvan port in Belfalas in Gondor, but I don't know if the silvan elves had a presence there at the time of the War of the Ring or if the men of Gondor took up residence there.

Gandalf and Aragon were doing tons of cool shit. Boromir was defending Gondor I imagine. Legolas was elfing it up in Mirkwood. Gimli was dwarfing it up in Erebor. Merry was drinking, Pippin was drinking. Sam was gardening and stalking Rosie Cotton and Frodo was writing poetry and annoying Bilbo. Done.
@johnwilkinsoniv17467 жыл бұрын
Aragorn spent a normal man's lifetime and then some, learning the ways of his enemy, fighting in the forces of both Rohan and Gondor (that we know of). He could be likened to Beren, who fought Morgoths forces in the wild for many years. Legolas likely fought in the battle of 5 armies that occurred during the Hobbit. He probably is old enough that he also fought in the last alliance, but that isn't stated in the LOTR or the appendices. (Perhaps it is in one of the other tomes of unfinished works?) The appendices at the end of the Return of the King have a lot of information scattered about, including how Gimli and Legolas eventually tire of Middle Earth and sail to the west. Aragorn dies after spending longer as a king than he did as a chieftan of the northern dunedain. Arwen goes to Cerin Amroth to die. Celeborn spends time with the sons of Elrond, and eventually sails to the west.

I find Tolkien's works are incomplete and that his legendary were never finished, due to is death. Christopher Tolkien, his son did a good job, getting all his papers of his incomplete works, scraps here and there and but together the Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales and the History of Middle-Earth basically the origins of Tolkien 's ideas. These were done posthumously. I don't think it was his intent to leave Middle-Earth as it is; but there was more to offer Middle-Earth with more stories. It's a shame that writers don't have the rights to take up, where tolkien left of, EU of Star Wars with different stories.
@MasterBombadillo7 жыл бұрын
I don't like the idea of other authors writing about Middle-Earth to be honest. You might like to visit a world that you know, but the world itself is just a part of my love for Tolkien's works. It's everything: the way he writes, the way he incorporates his philosophy, his immense knowledge about mythology and fairy tales, his perfectionism that created a really coherent and detailed world and stories (of course, in so far his limited time in this world prevented this). If other authors would write stories in Middle-Earth, they would feel flat compared to Tolkien's vision. They would feel out of place, take away the magic.

Quick question? If you are the new movie director for lotr? Will you make a redo lord of the rings but follow with the books and lore or no?

Albert. I love the films (except the Hobbit but that is because I think they are too lengthy and not a lot happens). I am not slighting the movies at all. I am merely talking about what is different from the books. Don't take it personally. If I seem to making a mockery it is because it astounds me how many people take the film as 100% accurate and then try and argue lore orientated points because of that. That is all. To answer your sarcastic comment: I would make them again and keep everything the same but I would add Glorfindel in. :)
