"The Coal Miner's Daughter" Loretta Lynn's Butcher Holler Home in Van Lear, Kentucky in Appalachia is BACK OPEN FOR TOURS AGAIN!!!
Melody and I took a tour of the just re-opened Butcher Holler home of Loretta Lynn. It had been closed for over a year but recently open back for the season. It exceeded our expectations and we HIGHLY recommend making the trip to Van Lear, Kentucky in Johnson County, to see the home of the Coal Miner's Daughter. We were blessed with a tour from one of Loretta's nieces who was a very gracious and engaging host and also stopped at the famed Webb's Grocery store. We loved all our stops in Van Lear.

My family is from a holler very near to where you are. It’s named after my grandmothers great grandfather. It’s called Asa Creek, Kentucky, a holler in Paintsville KY. Named after Asa Fairchild. The cabin my gma was born in still stands today, 11 brothers and sisters born in a one room cabin. I was blessed to spend an entire summer there when I was 13. This place holds a special place in my heart

@streetLIGHTkid, My Grandpa bought the property on Asa creek where the charcoal kilns are, and where the scale house was my Mama built a little house on that foundation !! Back in the 70's we lived in the ole Carl Tackett place, and us kids were playing in the creek and a fellow by the name of Alvis Kestner asked us if we wanted a deeper hole of water well of course we said yes ...he got out a half a stick of dynamite and told us youngins to get back, well he hooked wires to the battery in his truck and BOOM !!! We had us a fine swimming hole !! He was a grave digger for Jones and Preston funeral home !! Them was some of the best times of my life !!!

This is what I’m talking about! Takes me back to a time when life was different, better imo. Remember when somebody was broke down on the side of the road, and you’d see 5 people pulled over to help, and still stop and offer help yourself? Remember when you’d hear about someone going through hard times and make a little extra dinner to take them? I know this wasn’t the point of the video. I just can’t help but be taken back to the world I miss so much. When people respected each other. Thank you for sharing this! May God bless y’all!!

My Daddy would have loved this. He was crazy about Loretta Lynn. We didn't live that far from her. Way back in the fifties, he was standing on a corner in Grundy, Va, and her bus stopped right beside him. He talked about that until he died in 2016 at 93. Thank you guys for this video. We stopped at the store to get directions to her house from her brother. Very Cool! We’ve also been to Hurricane Mills in Tennessee. Met her daughter at her antique store. Really nice gal!

I toured the house in the late 1970s. Herman Webb (Loretta's brother) was at the front of the house when I drove up. I was the Kentucky blasting inspector for Eastern Kentucky under the Kentucky Dept. of Mines, and Herman and I talked for some time. When I told him who I was, he complained about surface coal mine blasting located at the rear of the property and said that it really shook and bothered them. I told him that I would inspect the mine and see if I could get the vibration levels reduced while I was in the area. He thanked me for looking into it and asked if I would like to go inside the house. Since I still had time to kill before my appointment in Paintsville, I said sure. Herman then said that will be $5. I still get tickled when I think back on that!

I’m a coal miners granddaughter. CMD is a movie I watch every time it’s on TV. My maiden name is Webb, grandma and grandpa lived in Minden WV. There’s supposed to be a Webb’s mountain in WV. My grandma had 11 children with two upstairs bedrooms,6 boys in one and 5 girls in the other. When I was little in the 60’s at night, there were pee cans in the two upstairs bedrooms. It seems so normal back then. In the movie CMD, I loved the part when they show the “company store”. It looked like the one at my grandparents house. My twin aunts never married, they stayed home and took care of my grandparents. One of my aunts boyfriend was named Doolittle. I could go on and on. All the ghost stories. These were my best memories growing up. I’m a new subscriber, these videos are so wonderful to see.🥰

Love Loretta Lynn and my heart breaks to lose someone like her. Years ago I got an autographed picture of Loretta and I checked in and took care of her older band. Her manager made sure to get it for me. She want be forgotten and Thanks for this video.

Yeah he was and he knew the area where my friend lives and he'd said he'd spent some time up there so they really got on plus they grew up in huge families.. ;D I haven't been back to eastern ky since 2018 so I really enjoy your videos, keep up the great job!

We stopped at Webbs and the guy called someone to come open the Coal miners museum. So worth it. Helps really tie it together. Our tour was done by Hermalee her niece. Great visit.

I have always watched Loretta ever since I grew up in the 60s. Loved her pretty dresses. I have to tell you guys what a great job you did. I have never seen any pictures of that house as great as this. It really puts into reality just how far back in those hills they were . Her hard working daddy never knew what a Famous Country Queen he was raising. She was his little Queen anyway. Thanks for the video

I think this was way more interesting than down in Nashville. Great job. 2nd time to watch. When I go to Cincinnati I deliberately go the double AA highway just to be on the periphery of the coal country. I highly recommend you take that from Ashland to Maysville and get off the 4 lane! Wonderful Appalachian history! Lot's to film! Check that drive out you guys!❤️❤️❤️❤️
